I was thinking, guitar into a gig bag, wrapped in bubble wrap, into a cardboard box.
Any way better?

That's how i do it.

Acoustics?
Thats when it must get difficult I imagine.
Only derailing slightly, as it has just been answered :P

I sometimes use the end (6 inches or so) of another slightly smaller box, make a hole in the middle of it and push the (already bubble-wrapped) neck through. That way the guitar's supported in the centre of the main box and doesn't shift from side to side.
If there's any empty space left in the box I chuck in some loose bubble wrap or lightly-screwed-up newspaper.
And make sure there's plently of padding/reinforcement in the ends of the box, because they're the bits which will get bashed.

When I sold mine I double-boxed it. Just to be on the safe side.

If we are talking electric with bolt on neck. Take the neck off and bubble wrap both neck and body seperatly and post together in a box filled air bags and newspaper and stuff. Thats how i did it.
