Title: For those who don't care about where their mic goes in front of a speaker
Post by: hamfist on October 06, 2008, 03:30:15 PM
I have posted this elsewhere on the www, but I thought you huys would find this interesting too.

I was pratting around with some recording today, and was experimenting to find the best mic position for a cab. I recorded a short riff with the mic 1cm from the grill cloth and dead centre on the middle of the speaker.
I then recorded the same riff, but each time moving the mic only 0.75 of an inch outwards towards the edge of the speaker (each time keeping 1cm from the grillcloth).
For those of you who have generally not been bothered much about where your mic is placed relative to your speaker then this could be a shock for you !!

I'm no recording engineer, but have done a fair bit of recording over the years, and it still shocks me how sensitive mic position can be.

It's quite amazing isn't it. Not just the position but also Mic angle makes an enormous difference.

cool demo, really does show the difference. Wouldn't mind seeing the results of an angled mic too

I did actually do a 45 degree angled mic dead centre on the cone, and it was virtually identical to the on-axis mic, dead centre.
I have found that my mic (Beyer TG-X 58) is not very directional though, so a more directional mic may have shown much more of an effect.

My SM58 rip off is quite directional I'll see what I can know up come the weekend if no-one beats me to it.

Yeah - amazing the difference it all makes
There was a thread on here about this a while back that made me look up a few things

I was playing with my SM57 at the weekend and that showed a difference between on and off axis (as well as position).

Yup, I'm not surprised at that Rich. When I've used 57's, I've always found them to be noticeably more directional than my Beyer TG-X 58.
