Well, I'd come into some money, and was looking around for a nice new guitar, something around the £500-700 mark - Les Paul-ish, not necessarily Gibson, something in that vein...
Didn't expect to pay £189 for a second hand Yamaha SG200. Not in the least...

... but it's ACE. It sounds SUPERB!
I've always loved the look of the pricier SG1000 & 2000. But this is really, really cool. It has a few dings, and some screws embedded in it - I think that there was a retrofit pickup installed clumsily on it. But it plays beautifully, and sounds amazing - there's a real clarity to it, very open sounding. I've had it for a couple of hours now, I'm just about to take it apart for a really good clean.
Today has NOT turned out as I expected...
:D
Mark.

I have other plans... I suspect there will be a NAD very soon...

Even better! I do envy your Orange too.

Nice guitar..love that shape almost bought a Sj? from the 80's
-
Man! What a catch!
Congrats

Brilliant Mark !
Now that is a bargin, I love the sound of the Yammy S.G. series. The guitarist in a local band used to play one - and I always thought it sounded great.
Nice one ... 8)

Cool and a bargain to boot.
My brother had one years ago and I always liked even though I'm not a massive SG fan.
-
I'm not really a fan of the LP/SG hybrid body shape thing they got going on but every one I've heard definitely does sound great.
Cool that you got a bargain aswell.

Fernando and I are in total agreement! Great catch!

Nice guitar. I've heard nothing but good things about those Yamahas.

Very nice indeed! Money well spent....now run out and get a few pints to celebrate.

Just had a bit of playing time.
A few observations.
1. Whoever thought that it was a good idea to have the strap connected to the heel of the guitar? Gives it an odd feel - something to get used to I guess. However, it means that NONE of my straps are long enough!!! (I'm quite a tall fella, and even with my longest strap on it's longest setting it's still quite high on me).
2. I don't get the 2 volume 1 tone controls - bear in mind that I've never really used this configuration - I assumed that each volume would be independent of the other, but it doesn't appear to be. For example, in the middle setting, rolling the neck vol completly off shuts off all the sound. Is this right?
3. I'm gonna live with them for a while, because they're quite cool, but the pups have some cheap characteristics; they are a little shrill at times, although the neck pup is stunning. Expect a post about BKP pup selection at some point soon...
It's a damn cool geetar though.
:D

2 vols independant is possible, but if you want to turn vol down on stage, then you have to turn two down.
I think thats why its done, I prefer it that way anyway. Some are wired after the switch though

Yeah, that makes sense. It just never occured to me before.

Yeah, almost... I don't like the look of that guitar, but it's useally said as having good quality and, as I've already messed the "blank to guitar" topic of Mr Bump, I decided to not say a word about it...
But I think that if it came cheap and if it's good guitar, it's a goddamn good catch :D
-
Fernando, you could never upset me! It's all down to taste, innit?
-
How the hell did you get that for £180? I want one!
-
Funny thing this model would pop up because my friend has one too.......it was REALLY banged up with stickers on it and stuff ............ so he sanded the paint of, gave it a red stain colour, new mashine heads, and I
finished it of with a Riff Raff bridge, we play together in a band that plays alot of AC/DC songs and it sound really good.
Now thats a nice story isn't it? ;)

I think that's about right - I've seen them go on Ebay for £150, but then I've seen them for +£300 too...
Just noticed that mine has "Made In Japan" on the headstock - some were made in Taiwan. Apparently the MIJ models are more desirable. Not that it makes a difference to me. But it's nice to know.

Yes :D But you know, not trying to be a bugger

Not a cheap one, obviously, as you had a fair bit of change.
Ahem....
Anyway, nice guitar! :)

Well, of course Philly, why skimp on the goods?

I got an SG800 of ebay last year for about £180 they really are great guitars; really really resonant. I was thinking of putting some abraxas in mine for the whole santana thing.
Its def worth pickup up one of these beauties while they're still cheap; you'll struggle to find a better LP style guitar without shelling out a fortune.
-
Welcome to the Yamaha SG Club.
Nice guitar for a bargain. That leaves room for a set of BKP's.
I'd put Riff Raffs in that one, it's practically begging for those.
-
Really? My heart is telling me Mules...
-
Nice axe. It looks like it had a Roland GR synth pickup on it at one point.

I'd be tempted to go with Catalyst77 here - Abraxas all the way for a slightly hotter Mule tone. I'm waiting for a used Abraxas bridge to come up on the used market so I can try one out (too skint to be buying 'em brand new at the minute, AND xmas is nearly upon us, argh!)

Yeah, somthing like that. It's been hacked away around the strap button too...
:?

nice axe mate, yammie sg's rule the school. i used to have a 510, loved that thing!
i now have the 1000 which i just ordered a bridge warpig for. should sound pretty huge i think through my Laney VH100R!
-
I love these Yamaha guitars - I had a MSG Custom which I always regretted selling!
-
IMO Yamaha SG's are very underated, they are excellent guitars that last forever. For the money you've paid I think you should be known as Dick Turpin!! :D
