Title: Need pickup advice
Post by: lockdog on October 08, 2008, 04:51:04 PM
Hello everybody!

I've got Gibson ES-135 - http://www.zzounds.com/item--GIBES135. Maple thinline hollowbody guitar. Mine has stock pickups. What i want is crunchy aggressive bridge pickup to get that Buckcherry, Velvet Revolver distortion sound for riffs and a great neck pickup for clean sound to compliment hollowbody's big headroom sound. Neck pickup is not big deal, but is it real to get close to solidbody guitar bridge sound with hotter more aggressive pickup? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

crunchy aggressive bridge pickup = definitely cold sweat

but I can't imagine how it would sound on that guitar
this idea reminds of that blink 182 retarded singer (hollowbody + dirty fingers)

stay alnico... maybe a rebel yell?

I'd ask Tim first

I wouldn't go with a too high output pickup in a semi.

I think you would do fine with a set of Mules. Slash uses low output PAF-ish Alnico II pickups.

I'd say a calibrated set of MQ's.

For a semi we normally recommend Stormy Mondays as with a semi guitar you tend to get a bigger sound anyway.
As Ratrod explained even Slash uses low output pickups with Alnico IIs which is what the Stormy Monday is, DCing around 7.7 on the bridge and 7.1 on the neck with Alnico II magnets. In my opinion i would not go much hotter then that maybe a Mule or something around that area if you think you will need more off the bridge.
