Title: How addicted to BKP's are you?
Post by: Yamhammer on October 10, 2008, 01:05:02 AM
Do you ever think you can get rid of your BKP addiction or not? I'm pretty addicted myself and I can't stop thinking about them when I grab my electric guitars.

What would you choose between the two:

a) Having an awesome, hot party with amazing ladies that want to have sex with you all night long (and with other ladies). Free beer/Free ladies/You're the only guest.

b) Free BKP shopping together with Tim.

With a bucket full of BKPs the ladies wouldn't be able to keep their hands off of me anyway!  They love great guitar tone...

I occasionally find myself dreaming of buying guitars, just to fit BKPs to them. Like i want to try the Cold Sweats, so will need a les paul. I have a les paul! I'm happy with it!

I then try and kid myself that i DONT need them. So I'll pick up a cheaper set, be happy for a bit, then plug in a BKP guitar and realise my mistake :(

Does this question apply if you are a lady?

I think a more pertinent question is:

If you had to choose between:

A) Torture
and
B) being forced to play a telecaster, and being pictured/filmed holding said instrument

which would you choose?

Clearly the only valid answer is A.

Question I'm asking is how old is the questioner, sounds like a  teenagers question

This sounds like a just-got-back-from-the-pub question.  It's such a ridiculous choice I can't actually answer it.

a) It's impossible to imagine myself in such a situation, so I think sheer embarrassment would destroy most if not all of the potential for fun.  Unless I had somehow metamorphosed into Calum Best as part of the deal (please god no...  :? ).

b) This conjures up a scene out of some chick flick where they go on a shopping expedition and the girl skips gaily in and out of changing rooms in different outfits while the bloke sits there trying to look interested.  With some godawful cheery music in the background.

I'll answer this way. All of our guitars have BKP's bar 2. One is awaiting enough cash to get them and the other is acoustic.

Three of my guitars have BKPs, the others are fine just as they are.

I guess I'm not that addicted  ;)

I actually preferred another brand of pickups in my strat, so I guess I'm not too addicted or blinded by the brand name :o

and I'd quite like a guitar with EMGs in for that generic metal tone

Not addicted, but I am open minded

I'd go for B as I get enough of A at the weekends.

Haven't actually got any BKP's, just stay around here for the larf.

Yup.  3 pairs in 3 guitars.  Quite a low percentage of my collection actually...

I suppose I'm in the same position, most of my guitars don't have BKPs - but most of the pickups I've bought in the last couple of years have been BKPs.

It's the first place I'll look but I certainly wouldn't dismiss other brands.

With my older guitars I'm either happy with the pickups or I can't be bothered to change them.  The new guitars are more likely to get BKPs, but I still buy things like minibuckers and P-90 sized humbuckers which BKP don't make.

p90 sized humbuckers? I thought they were mini humbuckers?

No, a minibucker is fitted in a P-90 cover when it's on an LP Deluxe, but the cover's just acting as a mounting ring.  I mean this kind of thing:

I knew the cover was just for mounting, but it is effectively still p90 sized hum.
Thats just using the p90 cover as a pickup cover :P
Title: Re: How addicted to BKP's are you?
Post by: Philly Q on October 10, 2008, 10:44:36 PM
Well we're both nitpicking now, but a mini-humbucker's not a P-90 sized humbucker, it's smaller than a P-90.  It's a mini-humbucker sized humbucker.  :P

It's a totally different pickup in its own right, which happens to fit in a P-90 cover, but could also be mounted in a flat metal ring or on a scratchplate.

Whereas that DiMarzio is specifically designed to replace a P-90 and nothing else.

Philly, I believe thats a firebird pickup and not a mini humbucker
oh, I had to :D

Either way, I haven't seen that p90 humbucker before, only heard of stack p90s

Thank God someone else in here thinks the same way as I do!

The only bloody reason I bought a guitar was in the vain hope of one day looking cool enough to get laid...

Yeah, you're right.

Although Duncan do call it a mini-humbucker, despite the lack of polepieces.

You mean the lack of adjustable polepieces? :D

I should stop this torture, I do apologise.

Anyone addicted so much as they would buy a specialist pickup (hum cancelling SC, mini bucker, FB pickup, stacked or whatever weirdness) and send it for a rewind straight away?

No.

There are loads of great specialist pickups out there which don't need rewinding.  Although I suppose if you really wanted a BKP Firebird pickup (for example) you could get something fairly cheap like a GFS and get it rewound.

I always go for BK's when I have the need and money for one. I try and see what I can do with what I have first, then I get a Bareknuckle for that little extra 'something' if I need it.

Pretty addicted here, got 7 sets now. But still not changing some:

_Baja Tele stays as is with Fender stock PUs
_Edwards LP Custom 3PU is fine with SH4 and two 59s ... at least for now
_Dano Lipsticks ... well BKP don't really make them and they sound fun as they are

Other than that I would like to try some Duncan Antiquities, some Häussels, Kloppmanns and some Suhr Aldrichs.

A Baja sounds pretty good with Blackguards Hunter  Not wanting to tempt you or anything.

And then the Dano - I'd agree with "fun", but it takes some getting used to after using another guitar for a while. I can't help feeling that they could be improved on though...

I have quick question on your Dano though - been meaning to ask for some time - the middle switch position on my Dano is wired as both pickups in series, is yours? (I'm begining to suspect they're set up according to the whim of whoever put it together ). I'd never have realised this if it wasn't for knowing the sound from the Baja four-way switch, I would have just been confused that the middle was so much louder. When I opened the Dano up, sure enough, the switch is wired all funny and the middle position is series rather than parallel.

But, umm... yeah I think we can say I'm addicted to BKPs
