Title: Replacement for Super Distortion and Alnico II Pro
Post by: juansolo on October 13, 2008, 04:04:46 PM
I have a project guitar has had all sorts of switching and pups in there. The conclusion of which is that I’ve been there and done that now and I like to keep it simple (like me). It’s an Ibanez NDM 1 that’s been stripped of it’s gaffa-tape and is now an oiled finish (not as bad as you’d expect). Body is basswood and built like cross between a strat and a tele (and sounds like neither so that doesn't particularly help), neck maple with a rosewood board. It’s H-S-H and currently fitted with a Dimarzio Super Distortion – bridge, BKP Mother’s Milk – middle and Seymour Duncan AlNiCo II Pro neck. I like them all and tend to use each on it’s own, though I can run any combination as they’re all individually switched.

The thing is that I like both the Dimarzio and The Seymour, but I’ve found that BKPs give that little bit more than anything else I’ve ever fitted. As such, what would be your recommendations for replacing these two pups should I decide to bite the bullet (it’ll be a while as I just ordered a Strat set this morning!). What I like about the Distortion: I like the chaos of it, I also like the classic rock tone it can do and the fact that it can get really nasty if required. The Duncan I just think works again for classic rock in the neck and cleans up nice. It also makes a surprisingly good partner for the Distortion.

Any thoughts?

I'd go with a Crawler bridge and Stormy Monday neck to get closest to what you have, but in a BKP package.

ceramic diver or cold sweat + stormy monday

but for basswood, I'd pick a crawler or nailbomb

That pretty much confirms what I've read on here elsewhere, that the C-Diver is essentially a BKP SD.  The Crawler and Nailbomb I'd not considered though. I shall have to ponder this one some more. Stormy Monday does seem to be the unanimous A2P replacement though. All good stuff!

but note that by ceramic diver, I meant the first holy diver version, that had a whole different winding
not the actual version with swapped magnet

Ah, I'm sure Tim would make me one if I asked nicely... :)
