I have been thinking about putting together a Warmoth LP. I noticed though that they only offer bolt on (unless I overlooked something). I guess my question would be if there are any serious disadvantages to this? I have always played LP's, and they have always been set-necks. With all the money it would take to do my own build, would it really be that smart to settle for a bolt-on when I could probably spend the same amount of money on a decent set-neck LP?
I am just starting to get into guitar building/working on my own guitars, and am curious to know if a bolt-on holds any true disadvantages. Thanks in advance for the feedback. :D

Take a look here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolt-on_neck#Advantages), it should help you out a bit. :)

Never had an bolt-on LP, but I'm on Warmoth forum too and there is two major feelings about it there:
1) It change the tone. will give you a more '70s tone...
2) Don't change the tone...
If you get a fatback or '59 roundback I think the difference will be smaller, but if you get a very thin Wizard neck, will be a difference...
Just to add, that difference in tone is no disadvantage, just difference...
For that advantage side I think a bolt on neck is more advantage because you can just change it if you brake the headstock or anything else...
That is the only think I count in that side (that I remember now )
EDIT: From Warmoth I would have a bolt-on LP, but for custom would be set-thru or neck-thru...

Good info guys, thanks a lot!
Has anyone here built a Warmoth LP with a bolt on neck? I did search the forum, but it seems that most have built Strats or other styles, couldn't find an LP build. Just wondering about the outcome.

Ted has a Warmoth SG.
Not the same as an LP of course, but it is a Gibson-type with a bolt-on neck - if you search for "warmoth" posts by "Ted" I'm sure there are quite a few pictures etc.

Thanks a lot Philly Q, I will give that a try.

I have had 2 Warmoth LP bodies, one was a double cutaway junior that I bought in the early 90's in Honduras mahogany, and the other is an all mahogany that I bought earlier this year. In both cases I got them with no neck pocket cutout. I had a friend copy my 1960 LP Special neck and fit it to the Junior body, and the mahogany one is having a custom neck made by Will Scott Guitars (this will be a Marc Bolan LP clone). So in both cases I have set necks on them. There are lots of people who say a properly made bolt on is as good (or better) than a set neck, but on Les Pauls I think the set neck looks better!
