Title: Green Emeralds
Post by: chris o'donnell on April 20, 2005, 11:42:31 AM
Tried to send a message to Tim but I don't think it worked. I'm hopless with compatuters.

Tim has recommended a set of Emeralds with the neck maganet reversed to give a Peter Green tone, with both pickups on.

Will open coils dtract from this tone as they would look good on my black LP Studio.

What will the neck pickup sound like when selected on it's own.

Can the process be returned to a "standard pickup" if I dont like it.

Will I be able to play like Peter Green ( kidding )

Cheers

Chris.

I'm always swapping mags to go into PRS guitars....it's easy to reverse, as long as you're careful!

On its own the tone of the neck will be unchanged, together you'll get the Greeny tone.

Covers tend to roll off a little bit of top end, just a touch. You can get them uncovered, if you like then great, if you think covers will get you closer, send them back to Tim for covers putting on, he'll only charge for the covers and postage. Try and get Seymour Duncan to do that!!

I think you can get black covers too which would maintain the "black" theme with your black LP studio but still have the sound of covers. Peter Green rules though, I think Gary Moore managed to get his paws on one of his LPs.

Damn - I thought you might have gotten some custom green covers from the title of this thread (I was all excited for some reason)

Sorry, I'm just a standard no green type of guy.

I've made my mind up to get a set of Emeralds and with the help you've all given me my only decision is black or Zebra open coils.

Cheers

Chris.

My favourite is one double cream and one zebra.  Though sometimes I like the covers on... Perhaps this is why I keep getting new pickups, I can't really pick a favourite

I have and emerald/mule set with the Peter Green magnet stettings and they sound great together, though I also have a set with Alnico IV and V, and they nail it even better (Riff Raff with 5, Stormy Monday with IV)

Hi Phil

I quite like the look of the Zebra format. I've never had open coils so this is new to me. I might get annoyed with them. do you find that they get very dusty and dirty.

I have a Stormy Monday in Chery LP neck which is fabulous. I fancy the Emeralds to try something different.

I can always put nickel covers on at a later date and watch them tarnish in front of my eyes.

Cheers

Chris

Hi Chris,

The Emeralds have great harmonics.  I love the sound of mine.  I also have the VHII, but it is a fatter sound.  I have used open humbuckers for years with no problems (I have a PAF that I got in 1980 and it didn't have  a cover then).  The covers do mellow the tone a bit.  My emerald has a cover, but there are still lots of harmonics in it.

Cheers
Phil

Phil.

Ordered the Emeralds with Zebras and reverse magnet today. Once I get them installed I'll let you know how they sound.

Cheers

Hi Chris,

I'm sure you'll love them.  Then you'll become a BKP addict just like the rest of us here

I think I am Phil.

Don't tell the wife, every set of pickups is a new bag.

Cheers

Yes but  where I come from a new guitar is several bags, so you're better off with BKPs...
