Does anyone one have any idea what amps were mailnly used for "St Anger"? Or has anyone got any suggestions as to what amp I could try out to come close?
-
Listen to the ENGL clips on www.rocksolidamps.com
I dont know if Metallica used these but the ENGLs sound amazing for metal. If I had the money I would get a Ritchie Blackmore head or one of the Pro 100 something heads!
-
It was actually whilst listening to the ENGL clips on here that I realised there might be more to life than my trusty set-up. Thay have certainly got some grunt. Thanks for the advice.

Hetfield and Hammett used Rage 158s for the recording of St. Anger.
Just kidding, lol.
Not sure, I tried a google search but wasn't too successful.

On the DVD they use Mesa's, Bogners and Diezels.
An Engl will get you that sound.
-
They also used a Dumble Amp, but I think you've got a better chance of meeting an alien than finding one of those.....
If you really want the St Anger sound just remember to ask your drummer to replace his snare with a metal dustbin lid and you're halfway there.
People will be so distracted with the chit sound of the drums they won't care about your tone -- INSTANT St Anger!!

Not a big fan of St Anger then!

No, I could only listen to it about twice, but I think the live DVD that came with it was worth it.
The DVD was the only way I could get into the songs.
Have you seen "some kind of monster"?
I love it when Kirk argues that not having a single guitar solo would date the record, he was right.
-
I'd say ENGL or Framus could do that tone and do better
-
From what I heard about the recording of the album, it wouldn't surprise me if they'd used Amplitude or some plug-in or other.
I know they did use some Line6 gear for the recording, as well as MESA's.
-
Line6 DM4(?) distortion modeller (+ a the other standalone modeller pedals for different effectz)
And dowwwwwwwwn tuned guitars
-
Haha I would have said Peavey Rage 158s too :D :D.
I was a huge Metallica fan a few years ago, and I was so disappointed with St. Anger. I'm pretty sure they used some new (at the time) Marshall amps in the recording somwhere. They were prototypes. Although I don't think those amps were ever released as a model. Maybe because of the press St. Anger got :D.

They did use alot of Line 6 FX. Most of the songs are in drop C, the window song is in drop C# and Invisable Kid is in someting like drop A on a baritone.
One question though. The pickups in the '76 Iron Cross Les Paul are said to be a custom made set of EMG's. Is that true? I don't believe a word of it.

If I remember rightly, there was a piece in Guitarist about the recording of the album, and I'm sure they used a MkI Vetta head into an old Marshall cab, as well as a few of the "4" pedals.
