Title: For Twilight Odyssey and maybe more of you... ;)
Post by: Nadz1lla on October 23, 2008, 02:10:56 PM
I couldn't help but notice the almost D&D reference in T.O's sig, how many of us are closet RP'ers?

For me personally I'm afraid I didn't have many friends who played real D&D as a kid, so I missed the whole table-top or P&P stage of it. Really wish I had started off with that stuff. My first experience of playing any kind of fantasy adventure was (and still is) the brilliant Neverwinter Nights PC game, based on the popular AD&D campaign of the same name.

As it happens I am arranging a few of my geekier mates to come over once a fortnight to teach me P&P D&D and get our own RP night going. 8)

So, who else is a geek? Own up! :P

I'm a bit of a geek, but not in the sense you meant - it took me a couple of minutes to think what "D&D" and "RP" meant.  I still don't know what "P&P" means.

I did have one go at D&D about 25 years ago, but never got into it.

Geek .ol

I play D&D... played once or twice Vampire: The Mask...
But changing from city and working a damn serious factory may take my capacity of interpretation... the characteres I've build are not as nice as the one before I moved from where I live now...

Jesus Christ! I'm younger than that!

I've played tonnes of table top rpgs over the years: D&D, AD&D (1st and 2nd Ed only), Gamma World, Star Frontiers, Boot Hill, Heroes Unlimited, Macross, Villains & Vigilantes, Call of Cthulu, Runequest ... and more that I can't think of at the moment. (This is being typed pre-coffee PDT_008 )

These days I'm more into playing JRPGs for Playstation/XBOX and Warhammer 40,000.

P&P = Pen and Paper, meaning the imagination is key to the whole process.  "I am Gwanthor, son of Thrugg! Come! Let us drink ale and hunt Orcs!" :drink:

Have you tried Neverwinter Nights? Or the one that started the D&D transition to PC, Baldurs Gate?. I've been playing Neverwinter for 7 years, haha! Addicted completely. Mind you I mainly play online on different servers.

Nah, I was a FF XI man, just kicked the habit recently so I can complete FF X-2 and the original Team ICO game.

I have never played Baldur's Gate, either. I'm much more into JRPGs than fantasy/Western RPGs.

  Ah, OK.  Then the time I tried D&D it was P&P.  They hadn't invented anything else.  Unless it was quill & parchment.

Hah! You old fogey, it was C&S (chalk and slate) the last time I played.

Thinking about it, maybe it was S&P (Stylus & Papyrus).

Or O&C (Ochre & Cave).

Everyone knows the original RPGs were played using smoke signals and antelope bones!

I used to love Games Workshop when I was 9 but then when In got a bit older beer and girls took over.
I don't play, but I do buy and sell vintage miniatures on e-bay as a bit of a hobby. Blood Bowl stuff is the most interesting for me.
I spent a lot of time playing Oblivion on the 360, that's a bit geeky

haha, most excellent video!

i played AD&D a few times, once had a vague go at Call of Cthulu, and more "sat and watched with beer" than actually played Warhammer and WH40K.

all a long time ago now. was very much into it for quite a while, but only actually knew other people that were into it for about a year.  and well, you can't really play on your own, can you?

same here, but i used to mainly just mod the minitures rather than actually play the games.  I sold a lot off recently inluding some pretty rare squats, a bloodbowl troll and dark elf team and a load of old eldar

i've played a few RPG games- neverwinter nights, morrowind etc. not my main interest, but i like them as a casual hobby, kind of thing. :) EDIT: oh, i played warhammer a couple of times, i like that a lot. one of my friend's cousins was a big fan, so when he was around we'd play (with his warhammer set). I actually bought the starter set myself but gave up about halfway through painting...

does axis and allies count? that was a kickass boardgame (aside from the fact that it took 3 months to set the darn thing up)...

Axis & Allies is a wargame. I love playing that game, too.

Don't know if you ever found our persistent world for Neverwinter nights before we wound it up due to lack of personnel, but I led a project called The Legends of Ferhan, which I was very proud of! We used a MySQL database to make the entire world persistent, and also allow us to generate custom encounters at any location on the fly (which if you've used the NWN editor you'll realise is quite a feat!). Loads of maps, slightly less content to go in them, sadly, which is why we had to wind up the project as there simply weren't enough hours in the day for the two coders (me and dms) to do everything that had to be done. That and I really had to finish my PhD at the same time!
Still, it was brilliant fun to do, and by the time we had decided to wind it up, there was about 30 hours of gameplay to be had as a single character. We're now looking at creating a new mod for the Source engine, and we're thinking that it will have a fantasy theme, but be a faster-paced, FPS-styled game than NWN was.

Yes, I'm a geek. Not as much into D&D as perhaps I could have turned out, but that's probably because I like shoot-em-ups too much so got very heavily into the FPS clan scene during my undergrad days.

I was into Napoleonic wargaming when I was a young lad, don't spose that counts?

Some other guys were getting into this new D&D (P&P) lark, but it didn't grab me at all, which surprised them because I was a BIG Tolkien fan.

And then I learnt to play guitar and, well, there's only so much time in the day...

I've never been sad enough to get into tabletop strategy games like warhammer but I do enjoy rpg video games. I still need to get Oblivion, I've had Morrowind for ages but Oblivion looks much nicer. Morrowind is too dark and depressing.

Doubt I'll be getting it for a while though as I've just ordered Far Cry 2 :D

Far Cry 2 is irritating me already. I've wiped out a guard post 4-5 times already!

I really wish i had completed Baldur's Gate 2, i got pretty far but back then, we were reinstalling windows 98 every 3 weeks or so.

My fave RPG of all time was Fallout 2, nothing will ever beat it for me, and the new Fallout 3 is going to be crud. For me, i think i'm done with gaming.

That sounds awesome man! I've been playing the same server for 5 years, I didn't do a lot of exploring after I found it as for me it's perfect! It's called the Three Towns if you ever get a chance to have a gander, it's in PW Action. Always having new content added to it, the Dev team is a few people strong let alone quite an extensive DM team so there's always something going on. Give it a whirl. My login is Nadz1lla there.

I can't stand RPGs, they bore me to hell.  I am usually more a RTA person, or FPS.  But i don't play videogames anymore, it is a waste of time.
