Title: What TEN SONGS define your playing style?
Post by: TwilightOdyssey on October 29, 2008, 09:34:24 PM
If you were to break down the musical DNA of your playing style, what 10 songs would you use to describe it?

is now not the right time to point out that DNA is made up of combinations of just four bases?

:D

This one requires too much thought for right now, but I think it'd probably be quite useful thought to go through, so hopefully I'll have some time to respond properly to it in due course :)

I'll take a run at this, if no-one minds...

1. Dearg Doom: Horslips. No matter how hard I try, there's always a little Irish Trad in my phrasing. Can't help it, don't really want to at this point

2. People Of the Sun: Rage Against the Machine. It's a big riff, a big weird riff.

3. Back In Black: AC/DC. As above, without the weird bit. Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy. this is how I like my riffs.

4. Hideaway: Freddie King. this is the first real "solo piece" I ever learned, and it pervades my playing. i'll be nicking licks from Freddie till the day i die.

5. Laundromat: Rory Gallagher.  Kinda combines my love of a big stinging riff and fluid leads. That wee bit of Trad phrasing is in there too.

6. Slint: Washer. It's not all big chunky riffs, though. I like the spooky and weird too. This is about perfect. The note choices are perfect. There's nothing worse than just aimlessly hitting the most dissonant intervals. This has the right mix so they stay spicy.

More to come. Bloody good question.

Great thread, I think though that , certainly in my case, there would be different answers if you asked me in 6 months-ok here goes:
Maggie May-Rod Stewart (played by Ron Wood)- the first solo I ever tried. Simple but says all that needs to be said.
Debris-Faces(written by Ronnie Lane- the chords and messrs Lane and Wood playing were a major influence.
The Thrill Is Gone-B B King- -he is the master of feel.Sounds simple until you try it
Bell Bottom Blues (Derek & The Dominoes)- love the chord sequence
Something-The Beatles- again great chord sequence and a lovely George Harrison solo
Dear Prudence-The Beatles- again it is the chords that do it for me here
Little Wing- Jimi Hendrix and a major influence on my playing-the fluidity of it
Need Your Love So Bad-Fleetwood Mac version- again tasteful Peter Green solo
Dont Let Me Down-The Beatles- again the chords and the chordy playing
Stormy Monday-The Allman Brothers- some lovely bits to lift here and I have done so many times over the years

I am a bass player mainly but these days I am guitarist in my band.I am not a shredder, not keen or capable of it. I love chords and "chordy" playing and I think that it you pick one great note it is worth a hundred "fast for the sake of fast" notes.

Metallica - Battery

It was what made me want to play guitar and I still find myself, if I'm arsing around on any guitar, with any sound, with any other folk, chucking those wee gallops in

Electric Wizard - Vinium Sabbathi

BIG and FAT and DIRTY.

Steve Earle - Billy Austin

Lovely, delicate, minimal playing keeping out the way and letting the song carry itself.

Anaal Nathrakh - Pandaemonic Hyperblast

Just absolute rage inflicted on 6 strings.

Strapping Young Lad - Velvet Kervorkian

Density  8)

Crobar - Planets Collide

Probably the heaviest thing in the whole wide world.

Enslaved - Lunar Force

Wonderful tone, harsh, aggressive guitars layer upon layer that remain clear and articulate, in terms of chords and note choice this is probably closer to how my playing sounds than anything else, sometimes embarrassingly similar  :(

Django - Minor Swing

As much as I have played metal more than anything else and it's where my heart lies, when ever I doodle lead playing, I always fall into (bad) gypsy jazz.

I'll think about another two.

Good thread idea.

Abominable iron sloth - Hats made of veal and that new car scent
Blood has been Shed - Greatings from the gallows
Anathema - Pulled under at 2000 meters a second
Pantera - $%&#ing hostile
Lamb of god - Ruin
My dying bride - The raven and the rose
...and Oceans - postfuturistika
Jesu - Conquerer

Slow easy stuff mostly

I actually had to think about this. And I couldn't do that at work, nor at my workout.

Okay, my playing style in 10 parts (I don't think there will be many surprises here)

1. Dokken, The Hunter. That was probably the song that got me into rock music. It is also the first documented occurence of the words "Mr Scary". Lynch's influence cannot be overstated enough in my playing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8pOTQQS2GU

2. LOUDNESS, Milky Way. My playing is probably equally influenced by Lynch and Takasaki. Perhaps one of the first 'speed metal' bands. Great chops, melodic as all get-out, what's not to like?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HyJJXiWFR8

3. Iron Maiden, Revelations. This song affected me BIG TIME. The Maiden comparisons in my own playing continue to this day ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAuZNAuTJGI

4. Judas Priest, Dreamer/Deceiver. How I got into Priest is actually a very cool, oh-so-80s story. Remind me to start a thread about it some time! :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXBnAhMDFdI

5. David Cassidy, I Can Feel Your Heart Beat. Many kids my age had their first taste of '70s bubblegum pop from the Partridge Family. Ruined me for life! :) These arrangements are 2 minute bolts of brilliance.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3fPtMuBtMs

6. Rush, Xanadu. This song = perfection.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qH_PPzcpeBw

7. John Williams, Lute Suites. Believe it or not, my first guitar hero!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPfZVflJdp0

8. Pink Floyd. Comfortably Numb. First solo I tried to learn. Still haven't perfected it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkJNyQfAprY

9. Riot, Thundersteel. Yes. Riot.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZUysqemMmg

10. Savatage, Tonight He Grins Again. Criss was taken from us, and no one who listens to his playing isn't pissed off about that. RIP, Criss!!!! :(

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piny1OorVrY

And that's it, my personal style's musical DNA!

This is something ill have to think about... their are some things that just spring to mind like Master Of Pupets and Orion but i dont just play thrash.  I supposeVicarious would have to be there aswell as some less heavy stuff like Grace and Tears in Heave.

I would like my style to be a bit more like Cumfortably Numb and Pull Me Out Alive (Kaki King).. a bit more progressive.

Very good topic.

Thought about it all the way to work.  Made notes on my mobile and everything...

It's really, to me, about the songs that had the biggest influence on me when I was developing as a musician.  And when I thought about it, I realised that there's stuff there that I really didn't expect...

1.   Empty Rooms, Gary Moore.
2.   Brothers in Arms, Dire Straits.
3.   Wild Frontier, Gary Moore.
4.   No More Lonely Nights, Paul McCartney/Dave Gilmour.
5.   Michael Jackson, Human Nature (yes, really.  Steve Lukathers playing is superb)
6.   Baby Can Dance, Tin Machine.
7.   Call Of The Wild, Ultravox.
8.   Pride, U2.
9.   Every Breath You Take, The Police.
10. King Of Bohiemia, Richard Thompson.

... although this might change as I mull it over and see everyone elses list...

10 songs is quite alot, but maybe i'll have a stab:

symptom of the universe - black sabbath
its a very energetic riff for them, and i like the changes and song structure. its a great song to jam as well

sucking my love - diamond head
again, the song structure and the way the riff works is something i take alot of inspiration from. its a bit different to the way a sabbath riff works

am i evil - diamond head
for the light shred intro solo/main solo. the riff is very similar to symptom of the universe

painkiller - judas priest
again, a different riffing style. learning this song opened my eyes to a number of playing techniques. naturally i have no chance with the solo

victim of changes - judas priest
actually this song is surprisingly difficult to play. it really sharpened up my playing

number of the beast - iron maiden
use of different 3 and 2 finger chords to get different harmonic variations, use of 5/4 time is quite interesting

sharp dressed man - zz top
nice and funky/bluesy. zz top influenced me alot, especially with their use of synths and drum machine

sails of charon - scorpions
i'm really feeling the different mode of the introduction. also roth's passionate but technical playing is something i've found very motivating lately.

live at leeds - the who
ok, its a whole album, but i like the riff improvisation and the way townshend solos. perhaps summertime blues on this album

bad to the bone - george thorogood
the solo again i find quite inspiring, its quite chordal, but in a different way. its also quite funky in a similar way to zz is

i'm not sure these are the definitive 10 songs, but they must surely be close to it ;) in the future, i expect lynch (after i was turned on to him by a twilight odyssey clip) and witchfynde will affect my playing more, they haven't really done so far. i really like lynchs tone, but i do realise i had similar tone to him - a similar rig even - before i heard of him.

edit: i changed this based on my last gig after my friend told me i sounded like 'that hippy guy from the scorpions' which i was quite happy about.

Awesome replies so far! Many guitarists I'm not familiar with, too.

I shall look them all up on youtube and, hopefully, have even more new inspirations to draw from!

hmm this is quite a hard one, not sure if I'll think up a whole 10 but here are some influences

UFO - Rock Bottom/anything off Strangers in the Night (apart from the godawful Love to Love, Cherry and Out in the Street)
GnR - whole of AFD really
Down - Man That Follows hell. Big aggressive riffage :)
Pantera - most songs
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone album. I just love the droney, heavy, sludgy riffage :D I dont really play a lot like this but its making me want to get some heavier strings on my guitars so I can downtune a bit :)
Kyuss - Green Machine
Priestess - Lay Down

Most of it just revolves around riffage, I'm not much of a lead player but some guy on HC says he can hear a bit of Schenker influence in it whenever I take part in any of the backing track jam threads, which is always a good thing :)

I'm into my Metal, however from the basics I listened to a lot of Maiden (three albums full, of course) and Metallica. so it would go like:

10. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
--- Actually, I like this song cause of it's slowness (and the solo) because it allowed me to, well, keep time, insane of constant power chording or anything.

9. Metallica - Enter Sandman
--- The whole song really, the solo wasn't everything, I loved the riffs in this.

8. Iron Maiden - The Trooper
--- The obvious intro and everything else

7. Trivium - Like Light to the Flies
--- The peddling, plus an introduction in soloing as I was major determined to get Corey's solo nailed.

6. Machine Head - (Enter the .11 gauge and Drop B tuning!) "Descend the Shades of Night"
--- Acoustic, so it helped me with changing chords. And the solo being beyond $%&#ing awesome.

5. All That Remains - This Calling
--- It all gets really heavy here, I think. And with the solo too. And the structure of the song, I loved it all.

4. The Darkest Hour - Sound The Surrender
--- Speed, it was fast. Plus the 'solo' which consisted of three notes dancing amongst strings and then which turned into sweeping. Got me into sweeping, obviously (still can't do it for shite though)

3. Bach/Mozart/Vivaldi
--- Fugue, Turkish March, Sonata. Enough said.

2. As I Lay Dying - The Sound of Truth
--- The intro, by this time I could 'gallop' but I couldn't gallop between strings which was like "WHHHAAAT" which was my first impression of this song's intro.

1. All Shall Perish - Day of Justice
--- Speed. Precision. Melodic. Death. Metal. Awesome.

It kind of got heavier, faster, more technical and stuff, lol..

1. Exodus - Chemikill
My all time favourite band.  I always loved the "H" team of Holt & Hunolt for their tight palm-muted riffing & whammy bar abuse.  Chemi-kill was the first Exodus song I ever heard (I was a little late into the thrash scene - probaby around '87 before I really got into it) & Exodus have had more influence on me than anyone else.

2. Obituary - I'm in pain
I could have chosen almost any song from "The End Complete" or "Slowly we rot" - Obituary's riffing style (the slow sludgy grind, the faster riffs that are only semi-muted) is something I've copied for ages.

3. Bolt Thrower - Ritual
Again, I could choose almost any Bolt Thrower song (critics say they all sound the same anyway!) for the arrangements, the pace, the heaviness & the riffing style.

4. Godflesh - Mantra
The use of sustain, feedback & dissonance.

5. Iron Maiden - Killers
Maiden were the band that got me into heavy music.  Killers was the first album I ever heard & the title track is one of the first songs I ever really, REALLY wanted to play.  The galloping rhythm of the verse riff is something I wrote into all my early songs, the great twin harmony work was & is a huge influence (just listen to any of my lead clips on this site!). Massive, massive influence.

6. Van Halen - Eruption
For the two-handed tapping duh :) (I was never really a VH fan, but hearing eruption on Tommy Vance's rock show was what got me tapping in the first place & it's a big part of my lead playing...)

7. Napalm Death - Suffer the children
It must be the Brum influence (I learned to play while at school in the Midlands & my music teacher had taught Shane Embury at another school) but I've played the big riff at the end of this song (which they admit to stealing from Celtic Frost) in more guitar shops & on more gear than I can count... :)

8. Motorhead - We are the road crew (from No sleep til Hammersmith)
Fast Eddie's solo was the first one I really tried to copy.

9. Anthrax - Among the living
Could have listed several songs from the Belladona/Spitz era - Dan Spitz's use of the harmonic minor scale & diminished arpeggio was probably what first took me away from simple pentatonic & natural minor scale soloing :)

10.Megadeth - Wake up dead
The song that taught me that all songs don't have to be structured verse-chorus-verse-chorus-solo etc

It's funny how the bulk of my list are songs that influenced my songwriting & rhythm playing more than my lead playing - but then I'm predominantly a metal rhythm player & I write songs so I guess that's to be expected :)  It somehow seems wrong not to have something from Rush in there, but Alex Lifeson's influence has been a long & subtle one on me - I couldn't really pin it down to one song.  Also, there's nothing in the list that explains the amount of acoustic ballads & intros/interludes I come up with, but that's more down to my first teacher being a classical rather than rock player (Opeth came along LONG after my clean playing was established).  I wonder if I'll come back to this post in a few days & want to change it?

Great thread TO :)

This question is driving me mental, cos I know how to play very, very few actual songs. I just make stuff up.

But I think

Metallica - One  My clean arpeggio-y and fast stuff owes a lot to this. One of the only songs I know all the way through, and one of the first I learned.

Isis - Grinning Mouths Big, huge drawn out buildups to dramatic heavy riffs

Nile - The Burning Pits of the Duat    Ultra-fast minor and diminished scale runs as riffs, and string skipping goodness

Corrosion of Conformity - Long Whip/Big America Blues-metal groovy stuff.

Origin - Debased Humanity    Sweepysweepysweepsweepdjentsweepchugchugsweepchugsweepysweepydjentsweepdjentsweepchugchugsweepchugsweepydjent

Led Zep - Babe I'm gonna leave you The slightly classical, but not really, arpeggios

Iron Maiden - Children of the Dammed Similar, but heavier

Meshuggah - ObZen  Odd timed slow heavyness

Machine Head - Davidian Superb use of hamering on powerchords and using harmonics in drop tuning.

Nevermore - Born Screaming, ripping lead, great use of trem picking, sweeps, arps, aggressive and energetic but melodic, phrasing and structure make it closest to what I play but way, way, way better.

No particular order, and I'm not sure of most of them. I am sure that thats a LOT of metal. I also cant even play all of that, but the vibe and styles are the most similar to my bashings of a guitar.

1. Man and Wife, the Latter (Damaged Goods) - Desaparecidos
Simple riffs and lines comined into one awesome, emotive tune

2. Crawl - Alkaline Trio
Everyone hates Alkaline Trio and takes the piss out of Matt Skiba's guitar playing but this track has an awesome array of the sweet ass double stops that make up my style - octaves, fifths, fours, beautiful.

3. Blueprint - Fugazi
One solid driving riff of double stops throughout basically the whole song. Repetition is key.

4. Killing a Camera - Braid
Saturated but course and slightly dissonant pop guitar rolling along with the bass guitar noodling in the back

5. A Line in the Sand - Q and Not U
Awkwardly duelling ultra dissonant guitars with perfect tone. This whole album is guitar bliss.

6. You Losin' Out - Two Gallants
Fingerstyle Electric on a big phat Gretsch. I don't understand the guy's style or how he does it, but it's amazing.

7. Sucker and Dry - Cursive
My Favourite song of all time. Unremitting huge chords, like a chainsaw in your chest.

8. Orchard - Indian Summer
Chimey, innocent sounding riff that builds through the song and grows from a cute little baby to an enormous spewing monster.

9. Mainline Life - Criteria
    Big driving riffs. ROCK.

10. Can't think right now but it'll be a song with lots of big, clean open chords

Only got a few really.

Scar tissue by RHCP- really opened my eyes to notes within chords as a riff, and i spent far too much time improvising a solo over it.

I lied my face off- Alkaline trio- say what you like, the octave riffs are still with me, i love them and this is a perfect song.

eradicate the doubt or bodies in flight by biffy clyro- both songs got me into using dropped d tuning in a more interesting way that the next song

Sweetness/bleed american by jimmy eat world- taught me simple chords can make a catchy song.

Looks a bit weak next to all your metal and lead guitar playing gods, but sod it, i have a blast.

Guess for me that would be very very commonplace stuff:

Pink Floyd - Time
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
Led Zeppelin - Since I've been loving you
Metallica - One
Gary Moore - Walking by myself
U2 - Bullet the blue sky
Scorpions - Still loving you
AC/DC - The Jack
Guns n'roses - Sweet child o'mine
Michael Jackson - Beat it!

Opeth - The Moor
Electric Wizard - Electric Wizard
... for me, the slow swinging chugging is just my style through and through
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast ... just clicked with me, the fluid solos, the ending, brilliant
Akercocke - Horns of Baphomet ... harsh sounding chords and rung out notes have had an effect on me, love it
Isis - Divine Mother (The Tower Crumbles) ... dissonant sounding chords, heavy riffing, great :)
Anathema - We, The Gods ... the chorus laden clean part at 5:47 is something that i've incorporated into my playing style
My Dying Bride - A kiss to remember ... the lead parts combined with the viola
Esoteric - i can't really pinpoint a single track (or even an album), they've shaped my sound a lot, really effect-laden, soundscapey sounds, something which i love to just turn the amp up, whack on the chorus' and delays, and just chill out :)
Black Sabbath - War Pigs ... yea, you know it!
Moss - again i can't pinpoint a track, but after i saw them live years back, the hyper-slow style just struck a big chord with me.

Certainly for me, the slower side of things really appeals, and that's where i've found myself playing mainly. Slow, heavy, simple riffs, interspersed with the odd fast section, and nice big chorus and effect cover clean passages, is what makes me tick on the average day.

i'm mainly a lead player, so that's what i'm going with, not that i can necessarily play like these guys, but it's what i'm aiming for. These are in no order, by the way.

1: Van Halen- Hot for Teacher
2: Eric Johnson- Trademark
3: Joe Satriani- Circles
4: Yngwie Malmsteen- Black Star
5: Gary Moore- Parisienne Walkways
6: SRV- Texas Flood
7: Extreme/Nuno Bettencourt- Get the Funk Out
8: Winger/Reb Beach- Madalaine
9: Zakk Wylde- No More Tears
10: Megadeth/Marty Friedman (for the solo) + Dave Mustaine (for the rhythm): Tornado of Souls

Bunch of other guys who just missed out- Steve Vai, George Lynch, Andy Timmons, Guthrie Govan, Alex Skolnick, Steve Lukather, Dimebag, etc. then all the classic rock guys like Page, Clapton, Hendrix etc. Then there's all the guys who don't really influence your playing because you can't play like them (but you wish you could), which is a whole other list...

10: Blue Jean Blues- ZZ Top
Classic ZZ Top

9: Red House- Jimi Hendrix
Jimi's best blues song in my opinion, one of the first blues leads I ever learned.

8: November Rain- Slash
I always loved the melodic nature of those solos, had to learn it the minute I heard it.

7: Tin Pan Alley- SRV
This is only one of the many songs that turned me on to SRV. I've stolen a million licks from him. :D

6: Since I've Been Loving You- Jimmy Page
One of all-time favorite blues guitar leads, absolute classic. Jimmy at his best.

5: Sweet Home Chicago- Buddy Guy
I know, nearly every blues great has done this one. But, the first time I ever heard it live was in Chicago at     Buddy Guy's Legends, and Buddy was playing it, and he just tore it up! :D

4. That Smell- Lynyrd Skynyrd
Great song, great solos, everything that made Southern rock great was in there.

3. Highway To Hell- Angus Young
Not just this song, but so many others. ACDC proved to me that playing guitar doesn't have to be difficult to sound great!

2. The Blues!!
No particular song here, but growing up listening to Freddie King, Muddy Waters, Albert King, BB King, Buddy Guy, Robert Johnson, SRV, and all the great local Chicago blues that I was exposed to in the Windy City left a lasting impression on me.

1. Comfortably Numb- David Gilmour
The solo by which I measure all rock solos. Big, dramatic, emotional, precise. I love everything about it. Pink Floyd/David Gilmour has had an enormous impact on my guitar playing.

1. The Cure, "A Forest"
2. The Cure, "Homesick"
3. The Cure, "One Hundred Years"
(Robert Smith, Porl Thompson)

4. The Durutti Column, "Requiem for Mother"
(Vini Reilly)

5. Red Hot Chili Peppers, "I Could Have Lied"
(John Frusciante)

6. Guns 'N' Roses, "Rocket Queen"
(Slash, Izzy Stradlin)

7. Ozzy Osbourne, "Mr Crowley"
(Randy Rhoads)

8. Ozzy Osbourne, "Bark at the Moon"
(Jake E. Lee)

9. Metallica, "Fade to Black"
(James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett)

10. The Smiths, "Back to the Old House"
(Johnny Marr)

There are loads of other songs and guitarists that got me stoked on guitar at an early age, and doubtless contributed some stuff to my musical DNA, but these are the ten songs that most closely resemble the kind of sounds that come out of a room when I'm in it murdering a guitar. Lately I've been listening to a lot of Kaki King, as well as a fair amount of folk and drone bands; but trying to map my bar-steward New Wave/80s rock guitar style onto that kind of music is, shall we say, challenging. Where's the "reset" button on my style?

Can only think of 5 at the moment but here they are:

5. The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again
(Nothing really technical, just big simple held on chords that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end)

4. AC/DC - Riff Raff
(Or basically all the songs on Powerage, used to always play along to that album from start to finish)

3. UFO - Mother Mary
(Awesome song and awesome solo. Schenker is a big influence on my lead playing, I just wish I was as good as him :()

2. Led Zeppelin - Rock & Roll
(Fast bluesy riffs with a good groove)

1. Black Sabbath - War Pigs

This is really difficult, so I'll go with what pops into my head.  Basically I like:
(a) players who express their personality in their playing;
(b) fat, singing tones and gnarly, piercing tones;
(c) melodic solos that you can sing, even if (like me) you can't play 'em

Roy Buchanan - Roy's Bluz
Robin Trower - Daydream
MSG - Into the Arena
ZZ Top - Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers
Santana - Open Invitation
Dokken - Unchain the Night
Mountain - Nantucket Sleighride
Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water
Y&T - Forever
Scorpions - Drifting Sun
Def Leppard - Lady Strange
Molly Hatchet - Boogie No More

(OK, I know that's 11)

Extremely tough question, I've been putting off answering it

I wouldn't say they all define my style (eg I can't play like Blackmore in Highway Star, it's more an attitude thing), though most do in some way, but they were ALL highly influential in some way... And bear in mind I was a guitar-toting singer/frontman, so these choices aren't all to do with guitar playing alone.

In no particular order:

Shinkicker - Rory Gallagher (live version on Stagestruck)
Highway Star - Deep Purple (live version on Made in Japan)
Cheap Sunglasses - ZZ Top
Testify - SRV
Stone Free - Jimi Hendrix (both the B-side and the live version on "Concerts")
To Love Somebody - The Bee Gees
It’s Late - Queen
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
Jeepster - T-Rex
How Does it Feel - Slade

Even if you'd given me 20, I'd still have had trouble eg, where's Led Zeppelin, Creedence, Lynnyrd Skynnyrd, Wishbone Ash, the rest of the 60s/early 70s Bee Gees catalogue (they were my biggest early influence), the Beatles, AC/DC, Motorhead, Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash, Abba, Elvis, The Hollies, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Elkie Brooks, Cliff and the Shadows, ELO, Rolling Stones, Faces, Small Faces, etc, etc, etc...

As with Andy, this is an extremely tough question & made me sit down & think (and it hurt!), but the following results were picked from my brain via a pensive.

Richie Sambora/Bon Jovi - Wanted Dead or Alive - now this really did make me want to play, the slight bluesy-ness to the playing made my jaw drop

Audley Freed/Cry Of Love - Bad Thing - this was the nearest to raw rock that there was since Free in my opinon

Marc Ford/Rich Robinson/The Black Crowes - Thorn In My Pride (any live version from '95-'96) - Yes I know I'm kinda cheating here, but this is when I started realising how close blues & country was. Beautiful interplay that from 2 guitarists at the height of their playing

Paul Kossoff/Free - Mr. Big - I remember I'd heard All right now & thought it was brilliant, but then I'd heard this song when someone lent me the Fire & Water & was blown away but how little he plays but that every note counts.

Ronnie Wood/The Faces - Stay With Me - rocking out never sounded so much fun!

Matt Schofield - Guitarist DVD - Now this is a strange one I know, ut I sat not knowing what to expect and came away blown away. This showed me that you can use the volume control for more than turning the sound on or off. Jazz licks can be played with blues & that they can sound amazing when done right

John Mayer - Gravity - Eric Clapton once said that he wanted to make an audience cry by playing 1 note, John Mayer nearly did with this song

Jimi Hendrix - Axis: Bold As Love - This is what guitar is all about

Bruce Springsteen - Jungleland - it may not be very guitar heavy, but what is there is perfectly placed & the whole thing of a song that builds up has never been done better

Rory Gallagher - My Hometown - I love rory, but this is an under-rated classic. Acoustic guitar can be amazing as well

Thank you & good night

Being really old makes it harder - there are so many great songs that I have heard, just picking out 10 is tough! I'm going to try to stick with one per artist too. They are also not really in any order, but I've ended up with 14, because, as you can probably tell from my guitars, I always have problems picking just one!!

1) Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing  - this one has always been one of my favourite songs, I remember when I first heard it, Purple Haze, Voodoo Chile and All Along the watchtower all come to mind too, but this is the one that I thought was the best
2) Free - The Hunter  - Once again a hard choice to pick just one song - Fire & Water, Mr Big, Heartbreaker, Woman, Free Me.... I saw the band about 10 times but the hunter was always a great song live.
3) Wishbone Ash - Throw Down the Sword - So many Wishbone Ash songs too, Vallediction, Warrior, Phoenix.  I do prefer the Andy Powell/Ted Turner lineup though.  Great twin lead guitars.
4) Thin Lizzy - Still In Love With You the Gary Moore version is also great.  Think Lizzy have a ton of things from Shades of a Blue Orpahage through to Don't Believe a Word - but this always gets me with the tone and phrasing
5) Cream - Tales of Brave Ulysses - best use of a Wah Wah - I was really pleased when they added it at the shows in New York - it was missing from the Albert Hall shows.
6) Peter Green - The Supernatural - another guitarist who has a ton of songs I could have picked - Oh Well, Green Manilishi, Black Magic Woman, Rattlesnake Shake, Man of the World, Need Your Love so Bad.  The list just goes on.
7) King Crimson - Court of the Crimson King Robert Fripp is an amazing guitarist, some of the later stuff is also incredible, Night Watch, Red, Starless & Bible Black, also Lizard, 21st Century Schizoid Man
8 ) Black Sabbath - Sleeping Village/Warning I always liked this over the other early Sabbath stuff, though again there are many things Tony Iommi did that are excellent
9) Jethro Tull - Aqualung I love Martin Barre's playing on this, but Ian Aderson does some great acoustic playing too, lots of songs I like by them.  I also love some of Tull's earlier stuff with Mick Abrahams on guitar.
10) Camel - Never Let Go Andy Latimer is a great guitarist but got lost when the Snow Goose and all the other orchestrated things that Camel did became more famous.
11) Uriah Heep - Salisbury This one is great - especially when you hear Mick Box click the Wah on in the solo!  This is another band with a lot of songs I like.
12) Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs - I never thought of him as the poor man's Jimi Hendrix!  I live a lot of his stuff, and when I saw him again at BB King's in 2006, I have to say his playing was brilliant.
13) Rory Gallagher - Calling Card - Tough to pick a Rory track - but this one from the BBC Sessions sums up his great playing (it was a close call with Tattooed Lady from Irish Tour)
14) John McCurry - The Choice  (from the John Waite album - Mask of Smiles) - I always loved the tone on this even though it is a very 80's processed sound.

This list means I've missed out some great players like David Gilmour, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Page, Buddy Whittington, Chris Duarte, Steve Hackett, Peter Frampton, Steve Marriott, Mike Patto, Bill Nelson, Billy Gibbons.... the list goes on.  However I've tried to pick things that were early influences on me, or changed the way I looked at the guitar.

I've been thinking about this for days, and it's damn hard! I'll give it a go though - it's too much of challenge not to take up!

1. Motorcycle Driver - Joe Satriani. Not a track that's influenced my playing style all that much, but it has to be number one because it was hearing this piece of music that inspired me to pick up a guitar in the first place.

2. Liberty - Steve Vai. The first melody for solo guitar I ever learned. Didn't learn beyond the main melody until many, many years later though!

3. Still Got the Blues (album) Gary Moore. Hard to pick an individual track, but Gary Moore's blues playing was huge influence on my lead playing in my very early days, after I got very despondent when I found I couldn't play like Satriani and Vai in six months.

4. Sweet Child o Mine - Guns 'n' Roses. Taught me a solo doesn't have to be 1000 notes played at warp speed to be good, which was a useful lesson for a shred-obsessed 14-year-old.

5. Knockin on Heaven's Door - Guns 'n' Roses. Hearing this made me realise that, after playing for a year-and-a-half, I couldn't play rhythm. I knew almost no chords, and couldn't keep time. I set about learning this, and it was the best introduction to rhythm guitar you could have.

6. Warrior Wishbone Ash. Andy Powell's solo work on this track was one of the first to make me think outside the pentatonic box, and also my first introduction to twin lead guitars.

7.  Fear of the Dark Iron Maiden. My introduction to galloping rhythm guitar, and I loved it. Oh, and more twin lead!

8. All Right Now Free. The solo in particular. It inspired me to develop my vibrato technique, which has become a huge part of my playing, and the aspect I get complemented on most frequently. Had it not been for this solo making me think 'I want to be able to do that', I might not have bothered.

8. CryingJoe Satriani. The first Satch track I learned to play all the way through, and it had a huge impact on the way I think about phrasing and string bending, and taught me a lot of control in bending strings.

9. Return to Serenity Testament. A masterclass in how to structure a solo. Don't get me wrong, I can't even get close to being able to play it, but it gave me something else to aspire to. Great rhythm guitar work too.

10. Paranoid - Black Sabbath. Made me learn how to palm-mute!

There a loads more players/bands I'm inspired by/try to steal stuff from, such as Joe Bonamassa, Mark Tremonti, Jerry Cantrell, Opeth, Eric Johnson etc, but those are the big 10 for me, I think.

1.Skateaway  - Dire Straits....(Favorite on the Making Movies album as a kid...but could be any of that album)

2.Davy's on the road again - Manfred Manns Earth Band...one of first songs I wanted to learn for the little guitar riff,     just after synth solo.

3.Here Comes the sun - Beatles..because heard my teacher play it and thought...like that

4.Hell's Bells/For those about to rock - ACDC...was starting to find own music..and mate taught me to play these

5.On the turning away - Pink floyd..first song started playing..thought whats that(well second, picked up sweet dreams on keyboard) I know there is better examples of gilmour playing

6.Paint it Black - Rolling stones..just great

7.Lay it down - Journey..just loved this

8.Toys in the attic - Aerosmith..love the sound he gets

9.Paradise City - GNR..again love the sound and feeling he gets

10.No one knows - Queens of the stone age...got into these quite late on..but damn there good

11.Chop Suey - SOAD...same a QOTSA

12.Diary of a working man - Blackfoot...great accoustic/electric line

13.Times like these - Foo fighters (but could be any of there's)

14.Nickel Creek - anything by them...how to flat pick

15.Aqualung/cheap day return - Jethro Tull...underrated guitarists Martin Barre and Mick Abrahams

16.Ain't talkin' about love - Van halen at there finest

Ahhh...have to stop...I know they said ten..but could go one for a lot longer missed Gallagher, hendrix, free, even Buckingham, Rush etc

I've had a lot of thinking about this! Like people before have said, its a very difficult question to answer it. I mean, what defines my playing style? To be honest, im not sure if i have my own style per se. But i can name those who have influenced my playing the most.

The Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps - One of my favourites to play along with. Les Paul. Tone Control Down. Middle Position. Claptons solos on this song are incredibley soulful.

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Pride and Joy - Although not my favourite Stevie song, one thing i've starting doing is the double rhythm and bass notes he does at the start.

Rory Gallagher - Walk On Hot Coals - From irish tour. You can just feel the energy in this song!

Derek And The Dominos - Layla - Cliched i know. But what a song! Duane Allmans slide part just before the breakdown is staggering.

Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Do i really need to explain?

Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon - An album, but an album that changed my whole outlook on life, and music.

Bob Dylan - Positively 4th Street - Although not a fantastic guitarist, i find his music to be very influential and moving.

Marty McFly and the Starlighters - Johnny B Goode - The song that made me want to play guitar.

Metallica - Orion - Just brilliant musicianship, great breakdown, great bass solo.

Led Zep - Stairway to Heaven - Another cliche, but i just find this song very moving everytime i listen to it.

So there you have it, that was VERY difficult!

Being a 100% strat/tele person my list is surprisingly dominated by strat/tele players:

Under the Bridge - John Frusciante
I just love those Hendrixy embellishments on the chords.

Belief - John Mayer
Awesome tone on the solo - there's one note near the start of it that is, in my opinion, perfect.

Little Wing - Hendrix
Just a beautiful song with tasteful playing

Would? - Jerry Cantrell
My 'growing up' song

Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
The song that showed me you didn't need to play with a band or play anything particularly challenging to sound very good indeed (being able to sing helps aswell!)

Serve the Servants - Kurt Cobain
Cobain is very underrated (in my opinion)

A Pillow of Winds - Dave Gilmour
I first heard this only a year ago - I was out walking my dog and had my iPod on shuffle. This came on, I looked up and the sun was going down - sounds gay but it actually made me feel at peace with everything.

Going inside - John Frusciante
Not a well known song but one of Frusciantes better efforts

Muffin Man - Frank Zappa
Great solo - I could never play like that though.

Bandit - Neil Young
An acoustic song in double drop D then tuned down two whole steps! Simple but great.

That's it for me although this list will change depending on what type of mood I'm in.

Damn, you guys must be really good players, if those songs define your playing. Interesting topic I must say.

Now, I couldn't really make a list of the songs I really sound like because most of my playing sucks. And if I wanted to show you my playing I'd record some of my own songs, not someone else's. Anyway, these songs represent fairly well what I'd LIKE to sound like:

Jason Becker - Opus Pocus

Hellborg/Lane/Vanyakrams - Mirror (the fusion of Indian and western music has been done many times, but never as good as, or anything like, this)

Iced Earth - Dracula (crushing metal rythms and harmonies just don't get any better than this)

Ayreon - Day 12, Trauma (I think this song shows Arjen's brilliance more than any other song, but I wish I could say the whole album. He's also a complete geek and will write a concept album about the quest for a whole peanut amidst the smooth peanut butter, but that makes him all the more awesome)

Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons (for obvious reasons)

Steve Vai - Answers (one of the happiest songs I know)

Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction (classic, straight-up yet catchy and melodic metal)

Marty Friedman - Triumph (many have done the anthemic, majestic style of playing, but never as passionate as Marty does on this song)

Steve Vai - Rescue Me or Bury Me (with hands like that it's easy to overlook his songwriting ability in favour of his incredible guitar playing, but this song is IMO the best pop/rock ballad ever written)

Al di Meola - Egyptian Danza (wailing les paul, baby!)

In my case I was putting down the songs that I felt defined how I played and what I aspired to. I can play the songs I listed to a good standard and I am comfortable with them and I learned them fairly early on and what I learned in them has influenced how I play.  I am more into playing that fits with the song rather than playing hundreds of notes. The main reason for that is that I cannot play hundreds of notes though  if i decided i did then I would work at it until I could but I have no desire to. Probably as interesting would be the songs I would like to define my playing but then I should just get on and learn them rather than wistfully dream about playing them. Waffling here but that was my reason for posting what I did.

Right this one is going to be really hard for me as i arent even 80% sure that i have found my own playing style yet.

However the songs that kicked off my playing rhythm wise in the first place would be.

Metallica
Whiplash
master of puppets
megadeth
symphony of destruction
disconnect.

i then moved away from the simpler songs and started on
Megadeth
tornado of souls
lucretia
testament
into the pit
trial by fire

then with my lead playing which isnt fantastic by all means i would say comes straight from
metallica fade to black and anything friedman (i cant play much of his stuff but hes a great inspiration to me)
testament

I can't even cope with such a difficult question! So basically I've opted out and gone for the easy option:

Hell Hole
Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight
Heavy Duty
Rock 'N Roll Creation
Big Bottom
Sex Farm
Stonehenge

All by  the mighty Spinal Tap!
Having 3 places left I'd add a song from Rose Tattoo, Motorhead and AC/DC....
