A mate of mine, a drum and bass guy, wants to start mucking about with his own stuff and asked me about interfaces.
For the first time my reflex response for starter audio interfaces (EMU) might not be appropriate. The sofware package is great for it (abelton live is right up his street) and the dacs are ideal, but is there anything with dacs that are as good, but connectivity more geared toward midi and samples?

i would get something from m-audio

The new Edirol UA25EX has midi in/out as well as being able to be used as a general soundcard and mic input with preamps if he ever wants to use those. Comes bundled with Cubase LE and some other Cakewalk stuff I think.

Cheers chaps
Anything specific from m-audio?

No idea, but I should be getting the Edirol interface soon so I can let you know how it goes. Based on my experience with Presonus I'd avoid those in the future just because mine has had loads of problems. Probably just a driver problem in Vista though.

In the defence of Presonus I'm very happy with my Firebox both in terms of its inputs and outputs, and I read a while back that it's mic pres are very good for a product in it's price range (although I don't have a mic so I've never tried them). I do use a mac with a firewire interface so I'm sure that's an important point to bear in mind with _tom_'s experience.

Yeah I read loads of good reviews of mine (Inspire 1394) so I thought I'd give it a go, but I think it must just be a driver issue in Vista. For example I was playing along to some backing tracks with my guitar through Amplitube 2 and my BTs playing in VLC. The backing track became distorted, weak and crackly to the point of not being able to be heard properly but the guitar sounded exactly the same as it does usually. Doubt that'd be anything wrong with the unit would it, I would think the whole thing would mess up if something in the unit was buggered?
