Title: Looking for musicians
Post by: Spitfire on November 03, 2008, 10:14:30 PM
Hey guys, i really need to get in a band.. preferably put a new one together from scratch, but id settle for joining one..

where are good places to find them?? i cant seem to find decent people anywhere..  The guitar shops seem to have little around here..

P.S. im in West Yorkshire if anyone happens to be looking for a guitarist on here in WY.

Surely Leeds has loads of stuff going on!? Check out all the music shops etc. since that's where people advertise.

Try this website:  www.partysounds.co.uk

Best place to find local musicians IMHO.

leeds has a lot of people who want to be in a metal band/indie band unfortunatley.. neither i have a particular interest in.

Im wanting to play something a little more progressive where everyone has a leading role at some point.. a lil more of the pink floyd ethos, but attempting to be fresh at the same time.

Seems to be the case in most places, down here in Hertfordshire (south east) you either get to be in a death/black metal, indie or uber breakdownz band.

I don't really care much for any of them.

That sounds right up my alley! Too bad I am in Germany. :(

here at Uni we're over-run with prog-tastic people!!! I just think they're harder to find since they're busy working on some wacky 7/8 piece with a 4/4 beat underneath whilst widdling into eternity in some fancy scale (no offence meant, I have the greatest respect for anyone who can do that!) and so are hard to get hold of? Maybe I'm wrong about that though.... I do have a mate at Hudd. uni who has your same problem, and perhaps I'm generalising just from the image I get from him....lol

who is your mate at hud uni? i live in hudds

oh and people who go out to write something in 7/8 with a 4/4 underneath are going about it all wrong.. thats like deciding you are going to build a time machine, then trying to make it work with toilet roll tubes and sticky back plastic.

one more point... people seem to have prog and shread mixed up these days... prog does not have to be dream theater... dream theater is not what i class as prog.

not trying to have a go.. but that is also a problem, nearly all the people i have met who say they like prog music think shread is prog... it has to be on a 6 string bass and have sweep picking with a MASSIVE drum kit.

I agree, I really do get confused by how that is prog.

being someone who listens to a lot of Porcupine Tree and Marillion and perhaps even in some people's view less progy things like Pink Floyd, Wishbone As, Flower Kings etc. I do feel I know the distinction...and the time signature thing was a joke. I do admit Dream Theatre have changed the way people see prog.
My mate is called Sam Stocks.

I second using Partysounds.  We had a drummer quit.  I put an ad up on Partysounds & had a new drummer interested within an hour & jammed with him 2 days later.

Been through 3 guitarists and 2 singers in the last two years. Posted virtually everywhere but got the best results from Partysounds and Gumtree although with Gumtree you may find some of the auditions quite amusing.

Good guess  :D The bad thing about Hull is the bad music scene and the bad music shops.

So far I've found gumtree to be the best, put an ad on there a week or so ago and allready had about 5 responses from people at my uni who want to get a band going or to add another guitarist.

Sadly none of it is really music I'm into, apart from an acoustic singer songwriter guy who wants a 2nd guitarist to fill out the sound a bit and play leads so I might give that a go if he's a good singer.

You never know, could be the start of a whole new direction for you.  I can picture the scene, 20 years down the line:

I hope I'm not that grey by the time I'm 40

I actually quite like acoustic stuff I'm just not very good at it and my acoustics a bit cheap sounding. Definitely going to go and have a jam with him, if he has a good voice it'll be good and easy money if we do covers in pubs etc. Plus it seems women prefer acousticcy stuff so it'll be good for that as well :P

Ah your from the better part as well. Bad Dog isnt too bad apart from the lack of selection but they gave me a good price on my Jackson so i will let them off.

The thing that i found when looking to join a band is that no one seemed to be at the level of playing that i was at, and some bands seem to be up their own arses because they think they are a lot better than they actually are.
