Title: So many guitars..
Post by: TheDev01dOne on November 11, 2008, 03:20:21 AM
Was looking through some old pics of my gear and remember the good/bad guitars etc etc and sparked an idea to try and make a list of all the guitars I've owned and it was actually a lot more surprising than I thought.

Considering I played my first electric guitar and amp for over 10 years before upgrading I can't believe how much stuff I've gone through in the last 3-ish years, from the ones I can actually remember I've had (including the ones I've kept and still have now)..

16 electric and 4 acoustic guitars, 1 ukulele (Lol)

6amps and two 4x12 cabs, two 2x12 cabs.

Only about 15 pedals, don't use them much, only have 2 ATM.

Well into 5 figures of ££ all together.. Seems crazy for only like 3years of GASing, and still so much more I want.

Anyone else got any ideas how much gear you've been through?

I keep a list of all my gear too, and there's been quite a bit   Including current gear I have, or have had:

4 acoustics - two 6s and two 12s

1 classical nylon strung

37 electrics

7 combos

9 amp heads

8 cabinets - three 4x12, four 2x12, one 1x12

34 pedals

Can't blame the credit crunch on you mate!  :)

(Mind you, I once added up how many motorbikes I've had; 45 at the last count!  )

That's a lot of gear Twinfan, what kind of time frame is that in?

I think the only thing that could outdo the amount of guitar stuff I've had would be the amount of bicycles I've owned, I seem to have a certain talent for annihilating them, thankfully the guitars don't get the same treatment.

That's over 25 years, if you start from the nylon stung acoustic when I started playing aged 8  :)

I must admit though, the vast majority of it is from the last 7-8 years

Couldn't resist this one, despite the embarrassment factor.  Over the last 28 years I've owned:

63 electrics

4 basses

1 acoustic

Not many amps:  5 combos, a Tiny Terror head and a 1x12"

Probably about 20 pedals, a couple of Pods and various headphone amps etc.

Down to "just" 24 electrics and a bass at the moment.

Wait until Phil King replies....

That's not so bad then TwinFan, pretty justifiable if you average it out.

Now that I have started the list I guess I will keep it updated as my GASsing continues. There'll be a bit of a switcharoo again when I go back to Australia but I think I'm pretty settled electric guitar-wise for a while so I assume the amp section will get a boost once I get some money coming in again.. Would love another Orange Thunderverb or a Matamp when I get back home..

Should be a resonator on the list sometime in the next few months too, dying to get one!

I dread to see the list after 10 years if things continue like this..

EDIT: Upped the benchmark a little bit there Philly  :D

I dont think ive done too bad, im only 23... most of my guitars have been pretty low down models.. but ive had  afew nce ones.. my RG, my Tokai and Tele.  I was always a bit more into my amps, but ive settled on that.

Squier Affinity Strat - Good beginners guitar (SOLD)
Ibanez RG550EX - Very nice, would still have if the neck hadn't warped (SOLD)
Ibanez Rocket Roll 2 - Looked nice, played very average, sounded average (SOLD)
Epiphone Explorer - NO, just no.. nose diving all the time, sounded ok tho. (SOLD)
Ibanez Rocket Roll 2 (SOLD)
LTD V-350 - very nice, sold this one though (SOLD)
LTD V-350 - Still got this, considering selling... but i like it too much.
Ibanez SZ720fm - Best value for money guitar ive had.. abalone is a no no tho. (SOLD)
Jap Tokai SG - Love the whole package.. the weight, size of the body, how it plays... just needs the nut slots adjusting slightly to stop the strings slightly detuning on heavy bending
Jap Fender Tele - A Beauty, the best guitar i have ever owned or played, by a long shot

Laney L30R - Beginners amp, not bad for it too (SOLD)
Starfield Pre & Power (also used with a peavey 50/50) - my 1st valve amp... i wish id stoped right here (or the sva-1 which is the same but a head instead of seperates)
Orange AD30TC - Beautiful.. just not quite enough gain out of the box to be my only amp. (SOLD)
Mesa mk4 - too much tweeking, not enough reward (SOLD)
Peavey 6505 - great value, a bit harsh sounding tho.. maybe with the biasing mod would be better (SOLD)
Vox AC30/6TB - very very nice sounding valve combo.. very expensive tho as it was a made in england one. (SOLD)
Starfield SVA-1 - my current amp, would not change for anything.

Korg A3 - OK, coloured my tone too much tho (SOLD)
Lexicon LX-110 (I think) - cant remember much about this one. (SOLD)
Roland DEP-3 - Very nice sounding untill it died (RETURNED)
Behringer DSP2024 - Budget, and you can tell (RETURNED)

A few Effects, cant be bothered to list all
Boss PS-5 - Didnt track well enough to be extreemly usefull in a musical sense (SOLD)
Guyatone MMX - Valve distortion pedal.. sounded very nice (SOLD)

I'm on 19 electrics and 2 acoustics at the moment.  Two electrics are for sale though, so I'll be under the magic 20 soon  :)

Currently have 3 heads, one 2x12, one 4x12, one 1x12 combo and one 1x8 combo.  Got another 1x12 combo in build and the Martamp Orion 'prototype' will be mine too.

60+ Pedals - probably more
4 pedal boards!

2 bass guitars
17 electrics

.......not as bad as thought!   (althought i have to keep coming back and editing this post cause i keep forgeting stuff!)

10 years, 16 guitars, 8 amps, not many pedals, never been big on effects or pedal distortion faily recently (while amp hunting) discovered the goodness of ODs and boosts though (TS808 through bogner uberschall is nearly as good as an EQ20 in the FX loop of a powerball  8).

Currently got 8 and 2, looking to expand the amps more than the guitars

The vast majority in the last 4 years, since I graduated and could actually afford things.

I know what you mean about the "magic 20" - it seems a more reasonable number somehow!

I'd like to get to that point, and I have maybe 2 or 3 guitars I might sell, but after that I'd be really struggling...

I've been playing for 17 years and have owned 3 guitars in that time (the third for 3 days so far):
1 Esquire Strat (which my parents sold at a car boot sale without me knowing!);
1 Ibanez RG470F/TBL (which I still own and has just become my backup guitar); and a
1 (and only) Wez Venables Vociferator (as if you didn't know!), which naturally has become my "main" guitar.

I'm not counting my 1 and only acoustic, or the really cr@ppy bass I bought for 20 quid off a mate ages ago to do a bit of recording with...

I'm definitely a one-guitar guy - the second guitar is there as a backup for gigs only.

Amps: 3 in 17 years:
1 Fender Princeton 112 plus (in the attic);
1 Randall RG200 (bought, played for a bit, got my money back because it broke down twice very soon after purchase);
1 Peavey 5150-II (Current and only real amplifier).

I can't see myself changing guitars or amp any time soon. :)

I havent been through loads. Been playing about 8 years  now I think. I started with a Jim Harley strat and some cheap Kustom 10w amp. I still have that guitars body but its been stripped down and oiled, I just dont have a neck for it. Thinking about picking up one of those £30 ones off ebay but cant decide whether to get maple or rosewood board. I dont think they do a large headstock either which is a bit of a disappointment.

I then moved up to a Kustom KGA65 which I still have in the attic somewhere. Didnt like the distortion on it for some reason so I got a V-Amp 2 (which I also still have). At this time I got my Epiphone LP Custom which I also still have, stopped playing the strat for about 5 years of solid LP usage which is why I love them so much now and cant get on with other guitars very well :P Anyway by this time I was a bit bored of the Kustom so I got a Fender HRDx, tried for about 2 years with various pedals to get a sound I was happy with but never did so ended up getting my dad to get me a Laney GH50L for my 18th :D The year after that I bought a Charvel Model 1c but got rid of it after a few months as it sounded shiteee with any pickups I tried. Put together a parts strat last summer. It looked great but I cant get on with the sound of normal sss strats and it didnt play too well either. Sold that to Brow and sort of regret it as it looks awesome now and I bet it plays nice after a proper setup and fret dress. Didnt bother with new guitars until March of this year I think it was, where I bought Twinfans Pearl LP Custom. Love it now its had a decent fret dress and setup :)

well that ended up being longer than I thought it would be!

for the tl;dr guys, thats a total of:
5 guitars (2 of which I still own)
4 amps (1 of which I still own)
various pedals, ended up keeping the Keeley Rat I bought off HJM and still use it quite a bit.
Title: Re: So many guitars..
Post by: Dazza1004 on November 11, 2008, 11:51:53 AM
owned, now gone

Strat copy, 1st guitar
Peavey wolfgang, modded it and regretted it
Ibanez Jem 10th - cracking axe, scared to play it
Ibanez Jem 7VSBL - Hated the pups, wanted the cash for other stuff
2 x Yam pacifica's -  great guitars, sold to reduce guitar count
Fender USA strat ultra - sold to fund the wolfie, big mistake
Gibson Gary Moore Les Paul - massive neck + girly hands = no fun
Lite Ash Strat - despite full set up from Feline was very buzzy and tinny
Ibanez JS1000 - got it chromed and it urned out shitee

Still got
Jap Jackson - 1st real guitar, needs a re-fret and hew pups/pots etc
2 x Ibanez RG550 20th anniversary, 1 with NB set, I have a HD set for the other
Partick eggle berlin with MM set
Stock PRS Cu24 artist, the guitar against which all other are judged, usually they fail miserably
2006 LP standard with earvana nut and RY/CS set. Despite what the general interweb collective thinks of gibsons I love it for what it is. I could'nt live with it as my olny guitar though
Washburn x50 pro FE, cost me £200, it's one of my favorites
Ibanez Jem 7DBK - had this since 2002, for some reason I have really bonded with this guitar

Amps
not many, gone are the peavey special 112, the marshall avt100 and the cornford hurricane (not versitle enough for me)

Currently got a stiletto ace 1x12 which is great at what it does but since I saw alter bridge I think I am going to chop it for something more modern, maybe a herbert.

Some lovely stuff but wayyy out of my price range at the moment.. I'm thinking more along the lines of eBaying myself a SH Ozark or something cheap just to screw with for a while. Will have to sell it when I go back to Australia anyway so I don't see the point getting something fancy at the minute..

Once I do get back home though I'm considering a Busker Delta or possibly a Michael Messer. Seems they're the best value for money in resonators at the moment.

Maybe I could track down JMT and steal his Ellis beast.. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grbFhgHTqvY&feature=related)  :o

My mates had a few of the Ozarks in and has to do some remidial work on them.  Generally I think he has to re-bridge and re-nut them as well ask making sure the cone sits properly.  I also seem to remeber him saying something about one of them that had screws in a very strange way.

There's a thread somewhere about resos on here.  I think a few people liked the look of the Michael Messer ones.

Same here, I hate gear shopping so I usually just stick to the one thing. In the times I've tried something "new" (IE something that isnt a les paul) I've sold it so I might as well stick to what I know :P If I had more guitars I'd feel guilty about not playing the others enough.

I have:

Patrick Eggle Berlin (not finished)
Ibanez Lawsuit Firebird (not finished)
Just started measuring up for a Cigar Box Guitar Resonator (so probably another 3 years until that's finished at the usual rate of work)
Cigar Box Guitar (finished - YAY ME)
Tanglewood TS155 Acoustic
Half built Les Paul double cut in the shed (although may be firewood soon - the neck was)
Bits and pieces of various guitars floating round
Fenix Strat which I'm trying to pinch of the wifes uncle, but who keeps remembering that I've got it.
Vox AD30VT amp

Had:
Cheapass Vantage strat to learn on (with cr@ppy amp)
3/4 acoustic which cost me £12.50 and I wish I never got rid of
Applause Acoustic

Think that's about it.

I've been playing for 17 years. Current tally: 7 electric guitars, 2 acoustic guitars, 2 amplifiers and 3 effects pedals. Over the years, the only other gear I've had has been one electric guitar that's no longer with me (Epi SG, damaged beyond repair) and a few effects pedals that I've moved on (including a Boss DC-3 Digital Dimension that I regret letting go).

Like Roo, I'm not much of a one for changing it up; the core of my rig continues to be the Ibanez RG570 (with RG770 neck) that I've had since 1995, and the Marshall Silver Jubilee 50w head I bought the same year. Anything else I've bought has been a useful tool rather than a "must-have" ultimate object of desire. :)

Oh yeah, forgot the acoustic!

Whatever happened to Fenix?  They were pretty good guitars.  Didn't they have something to do with Young Chang, the piano makers?

Edit:  Just found this on the old wa-wa-wiki-Wikipedia:

Quote
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Young Chang manufactured Squier electric guitars and basses for Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, and also manufactured electric guitars and basses under their own "Fenix" brand. However, because of the similarities to the Fender brand and instruments, Young Chang could not sell the Fenix instruments due to licensing issues with Fender, and production stopped.

I was under the impression that Fenix were originally made in the same factory as Squire (Young Chang), but they kept keeping the good wood for themselves which is why they fell out with Fender.  Although I could well be wrong.

The guitar is well nice though, it's really heavy and has stacked HB's instead of single coils.

I'm actually quite proud of having owned just 3 guitars in 17 years of playing :)

I think it is a pretty good achievment. It's quite hard to know what you want straight away and stuff, especially being that your 3rd is a completely custom build specifically for you and fulfills all your needs. Must be a great thing knowing you'll never need another guitar.

TBH now that I've experimented with most types of guitars, I know what I like and don't like, I think I coud quite easily live with just 1 Telecaster and not be too worried. But guitar is pretty much my only hobby these days and my only vice too. I don't drink or smoke, have a VERY steady relationship, rent to pay etc etc... buying and collecting guitars and gear gives me enjoyment and it's a pretty safe vice IMO, as they can always be sold to get the money back if I get hard up (You can't un-drink beer etc.)

If I could ever find a damn drummer then I'd have a band too which would justify having all this gear a bit more aswell since my main goal in life is to be able to travel and play music.
