Title: Single Coils for upside down Strat body?
Post by: Sorbz62 on November 16, 2008, 11:00:17 AM
Hi fellas,

Having now put Nailbombs in my LP Custom and a HD in the bridge of my Warmoth Soloist, I am looking for a Strat set for my Hendrix Woodstock bitsa - left handed body, Maple neck etc. Inotherwords, I want the look but I'm not left-handed!!  Anyway, I've just realised that the bridge pickup will be tilted the 'wrong' way. Will this make any difference to the sound?  I was looking at a set of Irish Tours but would I need to get the bridge p/u hotter wired to compensate?

I was actually after p/u's which could be versatile enough to play John Mayer/ Gilmour/ SRV but also push to really heavy blues thru my Marshall JVM, like Bonamassa (single-coiled version!) or gary Moore in his 80s Strat metal sound.  I was thinking of ordering Irish Tours but asking Tim to overwind them to increase the output to around 10 - then I'd get the best of all worlds.  I don't really want to go to Trilogys or higher output p/u's.

What do the honoured Bareknuckle-ites think??!!

Here's my Warmoth with my Marshall megamonster!

the bridge is hotter anyway to cure the strat bridge brittleness.

So  - would Tim overwind a whole set of Irish tours just to give me a little more power? Maybe 10 at the bridge and 9 for the other two with metal base plates?  I need a nice clean but a powerful lead sound when required.

What about the bridge p/u being slanted forward at the top E side - would that make any difference?

Tim could make a set of pickups just about any way you would want, but it's best to ask the man himself before you order.

And about the upside down body thing, look up a guy named James Marshall Hendrix. :D

You can also get the magnets 'reverse staggered' to really have the left-right thing working!  I have then on a guitar with the bridge pu in a reverse slant.

That's what I'm after - but with a right handed neck .... the guitar will be a reverse reverse style !!! :D

I've never really been a fan of Strats - They felt very scratchy, if you know what I mean but I loved the Strat quack of Gilmour and Mark Knopfler.  I want to go heavier though and I'm slowly getting the bits together:

Fender Ash body - primed but I'll spray it white (maybe relic it!)
Wilkinson vintage trem
Sperzel locking tuners

I'm looking for a nice neck now and some Irish tours.  This baby should sing!!! Especially through my Marshall JVM which gives an awesome clean sound.

You can't go far wrong with ITs for Hendrix/SRV tones, pretty versatile too.
Maybe not so versatile if you get them made too hot, best to e-mail Tim about that.

I've now built my Strat - with a Mighty Mite neck at the moment.  I have a Left Hand Fender neck coming shortly.  The pickups are 70s Fender standard. Not bad actually but I know I'll change them to BKPs soon.
