Title: Steampunking an Amp.
Post by: headtheball on November 17, 2008, 10:50:36 AM
Asking this on behalf of a mate.

He's been talking about giving his much loved and much more abused Marshall head (A single Channel JCM 800, but by now isn't really "vintage". it's a bit of a "Trigger's Broom") a little of a cosmetic makeover.

So, the silly questions:
Is there anywhere than sells "custom" control Plates and Amp Logos? Preferably Brass/Copper covered ones?
Does Oxblood Tolex exist?
Would it completely banjax the tone to fit Jewel Lights above each control, with a "green-yellow-red" thing going on (I could do the circuitry for this easily enough, more concerned about the effect on tone overall (maybe switch the pots to Dual gang ones, and run a seperate circuit on a dedicated supply)?

Now, I've half-heartedly googled this, but it's tricky when you're not utterly au fait with the suppliers of this stuff

The timer IC needed to step through the colours on the LEDs would most likely introduce a 'ticking' noise into the audio path unless you shield the circuit VERY well.

Seems like a totally pointless mod imo - do the nightrider thing instead, now THAT would rule.  It's been on my 'to do' list for ages, I even bought the 555 IC's, ha ha.
