Title: Vacuum Tube Integrity
Post by: Drac on September 30, 2005, 08:56:50 AM
Hello mates...
-I'm  on a rant, 'cause  of a lengthy spell in rack hell!-
Would like to here what you guys are doing for effecting "real amp" sound at gig/'over drums' levels-
I've been using rack mounted multieffects for some years now (G-force), and am tired of their intrusion on the intimate relationship between my axe, preamp, poweramp, and cabs...
-If I have the chance, I like to run two stacks-One Bone dry, and the other driving 2x12's "killdry"- dripping wet...Then I'm lugging double the gear. Not always practical for small gigs/vans/stairways
-What are yer preferences? rack vs. stomp boxes, digital vs. analog? I need 1 organic, soaring lead sound that won't  "pump a chunk  on my precious "Amp-zilla's"  gossamer-winged divulgences...
-How do YOU do it?

I'm tending to run just dry now for my overdrive, I find it cuts through a drummer and lends clarity to avoid delay and reverb live - if you want it in the mix add it at the PA desk - but on stage you'll enjoy clarity!!

But if you must have FX I don't like to use a FX loop.....it destroys teh interaction between preamp and poweramp stages! So try this:

The ideal could be; Head - load box - speaker out to speaker dry
                                                  \
Line out to G Major - poweramp and cab for fx wet

Then you get the sound of your effects after the power amp for more tonal juicy goodness

HJM: I agree, yer setup is primo...
-Also my favorite config, but hard on the old back!-
that's the price of being a gear pig...

-I run the Axe through my wah into the Triaxis-live out to 20/20 poweramp, driving a recto 4x12", & record out to EQ, the control freak ( t.c.G-force), and finally  a 2:90 driving a pair of recto 2x12"s-
Sounds great!-
I've got two separate midi boards confusing me while my guitar frantically waxes poetic...
I'm a long spell of midi mapping away from controlling my wet & dry sounds from a single board...
Looks like hell on the floor in front of me-Close me eyes, though, and it's all good.-
Subsequently, the 2 furlongs of stage pasta to hook this all up makes me fiend for a combo amp, and a stomp box!-
 Unfortunately, more cannot be less
weep, weep, weep...

Big 3D sound has it's price- & it's payback time.
-thanks for yer input, mate!- Drac

I prefer my rig as simple as possible. Good tube amp with few knobs, good cab. A decent overdrive. I rarely use FX, when I do, I prefer analog stomp boxes.

Simple is great-less to go wrong!-

- but my role in this specific project is sonic slapstick to my rhythm buddy's playing : he's bone-dry straight in, and I'm supposed to wah/effect/lead/'get ambient' n' freaky... to contrast with his perambulations-that's what he asked for...(his tunes, his project...)
-that's why I'm scratching my skull on  the aural cr@pulence!
-I've got the sounds- now just have to map my ground (de)control...
Easier said than done-

Why not run the Traixis dry to one side of the power amp and then the TC in the other channel...only mono but no extra gear?? Just need a stereo cab!

Good Idea...
that could effectively trim me down to one 4x12", and one power amp...
so obvious, I couldn't see it.
-Would also be cool to have a 4x12 cab that would do 3-4 way splits...
either 2 of the 12"s in tandem, with two stereo single 12"s,
 or 4 single 12"s-
-of course the cab works most efficiently volume wise as a 4x12, but oodles of snoodling power is in copious copasetic  excess,  and I can barely get the 20/20's volume over 9o'clock  before I have to run away, and  have the electric company shut my grid down so I can approach it to turn it off...
This is my favorite tube stereo power amp- it's SOOOO pissed off.
thanks for the simple setup tip, mate.

Effects? Puh! real tone-purists such as I don't use effects.

(Yeah.... or maybe I just can't afford any, hehe! don't you hate tone snobs?)
