Title: Toys in the Attic
Post by: Ian Price on December 06, 2008, 03:47:25 PM
Afternoon all - I've been listening to Toys in the Attic, whilst washing my car. Great album IMO - any advice on how to get similar tone on a budget (I'm talking guitar and BKPs - not amp). Budget is around £400 - I've considered second hand epi les pauls but not sure what else is out there. Also not sure on what BKPs to go for - with the inclusion of BKPs I know it will be tight!

For £400, I'd try and hunt down one of the Signature brand LPs.  Made in Japan, superb build quality, awesome value for money.  Time to dig out 'that' pic isn't it?  ;)

Around £300-£350 should get you one.  Some cheap PAF clones, like I now have in mine, and you'd be there within budget  :D

Any reasonable Les Paul Clone and some Mules should do the job.

Not any more!  No-one wanted it so I've put some new pickups in it and it's now a keeper!

old school Aerosmith always make me think of P90s - you'd get their older tone with an LP jr and a BKP91.

couldn't find any Epi Japan LP jr's on ebay, but found this GT (over-budget though)... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/EDWARDS-Japan-E-LP92SD-P-Gold-Top-2008_W0QQitemZ330259897961QQihZ014QQcategoryZ33038QQcmdZViewItem

oh, but this GT is under-budget (woo)... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Epiphone-Japan-Gibson-Les-Paul-Gold-Top-Made-in-Japan_W0QQitemZ220323165420QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar?hash=item220323165420&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1298%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

and this black custom which I'm seriously tempted to get for myself... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Epiphone-Japan-Les-Paul-Custom-Black-Beauty-Gibson-376_W0QQitemZ170284902750QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar?hash=item170284902750&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1298%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

I know what you mean about the P90s, but I think it's probably a PAF with the tone rolled off a touch.

Joe Perry used a P-90 SG a LOT when I saw then live a couple of years ago, and he's well known for using them in the studio.

I'd go with 'buckers though as they're more versatile.  I have a P90 guitar, but I don't use it all that much as it's a bit of a one-trick pony (light crunch indie-blues stuff).
