ok, so I can feel myself giving in to GAS once more - I finally want to give in to my 335 cravings, but what to get?
at around the £500 mark, I'm sure there are plenty of options but its where to start. here's what I'm after...
* its got to be cherry red
* Bigsby would be nice, but not essential (can always be retro-fitted)
* fairly true to the Gibson/Epi shapes
* half decent pickups as standard would be nice till I have the cash to put Stormy Mondays in it
I'm thinking Edwards or Epi Japan at the minute - is that doable with £500?

this looks tasty... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HAGSTROM-VIKING-DELUXE-TREM-335-GUITAR-W-TREMELO-BLACK_W0QQitemZ110323533309QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar?hash=item110323533309&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1298%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
and so does this... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRAND-NEW-TOKAI-ES60-335-STYLE-ELECTRIC-GUITAR-BLOWOUT_W0QQitemZ150314919719QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV?hash=item150314919719&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1298%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
anyone played either of these guitars or have other 335-related advice?

I've tried the hagstrom, it's very nice.

My girlfriend's dad and uncle both have one of these. Her dads is standard and apparently has Gibson pickups in (not sure if that's stock or not though) and her uncles has bigsby and rotary tone switch and coil splits and loads of fancy wiring stuff in it. Great great guitars. Far better than any Epi I've ever played, not played any Gibsons though but I'd wager this competes well. Especially for the price.

Thought it would be worth a look anyway.

that tokai's not japanese, just to let you know.
i can't see you getting an edwards for that, unless it's second-hand- even before the pound completely collapsed against the yen, those edwards 335 copies were more like £700-£800.
i could be wrong, but if you want an MIJ one, you're most likely going to have to go second hand, or else up your budget to around the £700-£800 mark (some MIJ tokai es 335s are on ebay for around that- i haven't tried them, though).

It's not red its black but what a bargain, these are probably better than Gibsons.

Thanks for all the replies. that 330-style (Casino?) looks gorgeous, but I don't want a 330-style guitar as it's P90s and a 17th fret body joint. I want the upper-fret access of the 335 and humbuckers. anyway, £650 is more than I'm willing to spend.
I'm most likely going second hand unless a great deal presents itself for a new guitar.
There should be somewhere locally with those Tokai 335s so I can try one out. The Hagstroms look cool-as-f*uck, this one is lovely, if only it had a Bigsby...

Hagstroms are nice..so are the Tokai...and even the cheaper ender tokai where far better than epi equivalents..although did like this epi http://www.wizardguitars.com/SemiAcousticGuitars.php?product=1040&action=moreinfo&offset=0 and this odd peerless http://www.wizardguitars.com/SemiAcousticGuitars.php?product=1065&action=moreinfo&offset=0
and before anyone says yes there are cheaper places...but was near enough to go try stuff
This was the one i'd have if I had the money though Hagstrom viking without trem http://www.guitarzone.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=959&osCsid=0f9d30f88ff5eb970e0346063aba08e3

i'd just be careful... at £500 you aren't a million miles away from the MIJ copies, it'd be a shame to buy something at £400-£500, like it for a while, then decide it doesn't cut it, only to have to buy the MIJ one eventually anyway.
Not saying that would definitely happen to you, but it'd probably happen to me...

That Yamaha SA1100 that JohnnyMac listed is a fair deal - I had an old RGX Custom which was Made in Taiwan - excellent build quality - seems like good value to me. Another thought as I am typing - what about one of the early MIJ Aria 335 clones?
