Title: A christmas cheese dilemma....
Post by: Ian Price on December 11, 2008, 11:28:47 PM
I've had to limit myself to only one type of cheese for Christmas this year (in training for a few half marathons in February  :o).

If you could choose only one cheese for Christmas what would it be? I think I'm going to go for a bit of Stilton.

Sorry.

"A few half marathons in February"?  Are you mad, man?  :?

One cheese mmmmm! No drinking? Wine perhaps? A marathon? For the winter over there all of the above and a Jalsberg too! And the day of the marathon : Pasta, olive oil and a bit of Parmesan , no tomato!!

Ooh, this just gave me an idea for a thread.  Hope you don't mind.

Edit:  I forgot to contribute to this thread but I'm afraid as someone from Wisconsin I couldn't possibly choose just one type of cheese.  That's just blasphemy donchaknow.

You mean there is more than one type of cheese?

Sainsbury's mature cheddar.

I forgot about that - lovely nutty sort of taste. Maybe I'll have two cheeses  :)

Which one - the 1978 one or "Live to Win"?

For me it would be Stilton by a mile, second: melt down some Raclette with some french bread.

That Roclette sounds good! Wish I had never posted this now. You could say I am cheesed off.

You got me there.... I've never even heard of "Live to Win"!

Does it have the Stanley cheese factor in full effect?

To go back to the original question, can't really suggest anything as I'm not a big cheese fan.  Certainly nothing mild or runny.  Extra extra EXTRA mature cheddar, straight out of the fridge (NOT at room temperature  :x ).

Stilton FTW.

If I had to pick only one, then as a Yorkshireman it should be Wensleydale, but as a cheese fanatic I would pick Taleggio (though Morbier would be giving it a close run).  As a real cheese fan though, I would eat any cheese (and I certainly wouldn't be limited to one)!!

I'm not a huge cheese fan, but as long as no one says brie then anything should be fine.

I'd just go for a mature cheddar.. seems the most sensible option!

Why is that the most sensible option? To me stilton is the most sensible christmas cheese!

probably stilton. though i wouldn't want to have to narrow it down to one.

why not just buy smaller amounts of different types of cheese? or am i missing something?

Cheddar is versatile and everyone likes it.

But to truly enjoy Stilton you do need a large chunk of it - like at least 1/4 of a round.  Same with a good brie - it tastes better if you get a whole round and let it go runny......hhmmmmmm......cheeeeeseee

Brie nice for french bread. Regiano Parmisan for full on flavour with real Italian smoked ham and balsamic vinegar.
But it's a christmas cheese thread so dairy lea or stilton.

I have to find that for my neice who is 6 and a massive Wallace & Gromit fan as well as being a cheese lover!  Wensleydale was the cheese I grew up with on a piece of christmas cake.

i have a theory that cheese can go with anything as long as you get the right cheese.... i mean, what food isnt improved by cheese!

there is obviously one exception that proves the rule.... chinese food

I think it's got to be some Saint Agur, or some Gorgonzola for me, although Stilton and Brie are very close behind!
Most cheese is good, but i'm not a fan of ones like crumbly Lancashire or Wensleydale... i'll eat cheddar 'til the cows come home though, it's so moreish :)
Can't forget the pickled onions to accompany the cheese and crackers either, love them things!

Interesting. The other day I was given a box of cheese straws, you know the kind of cheesy pastry sticks, but these are covered in icing sugar. I was somewhat dubious but after the initial "It's sweet. It's cheesy. It's sweet... and... cheesy" I managed to get through half the box in the space of a few minutes.

you haven't lived my friend until you've tried a slice of cheese with a rich fruit cake.

wensleydale with christmas cake is taste perfection

Or Herring with strawberry. A good blend I find.

Must admit I'm having some difficulty with this "cheese - the universal accompaniment" concept.  :?

(Or should that be "cheese - the new black"?)

er.. I was kidding-I just loved the idea of someone trying it out ( the herring and strawberry).

I know you were kidding (although I did wonder for a moment if there was a cheese called Herring....).

I don't think anyone else is though.

All this talk of cheese made me go to the shop - I bought Morbier, Abbaye De Belloc, a really nice soft Brie and Assiago Fresco.  I already ate a lot of it!
