Title: Alcoholic winter warmth...
Post by: Lazy_McDoesnothing on December 12, 2008, 01:40:06 AM
This is inspired by the Christmas cheese thread.  If you had to limit yourself to one type of beer(or brand etc.), which would you choose?  Pictures and web links are encouraged.

My choice would be New Glarus Uff-Da Bock.

It's a local micro brew from here in Wisconsin that is thick, dark, and full of flavor.  It's easily my favorite beer for any occasion or time of year.

not sure if i should be responding to this seeing as i'm underage, but being in college the only choices i've got are natural ice and keystone. i'd go with the natty.

my choice would be Clotworthy Dobbin! it's brewed a few miles away from my house in the Mourne Mountains, it's absolutely gorgeous, and it blows your head off!!  percentage wise it isn't any stronger than other beers, but for some reason it seems to hit me hard every time i drink it. yet the hangover isn't too bad, despite it being a dark ale.  wonderful stuff :)

oh, their other two beers, Belfast Ale and Belfast Lager, are also both lovely. the Lager is just about the finest i've tasted, certainly since the last time i was in Brussels!

Hmmm, I don't drink much at all, but I'd say Baileys would be a strong contender, or for a beer probably Tanglefoot.

I've had more than my fair share of cheap beer in my day.  Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.  Thankfully primates like us can fashion tools like beer bongs so you don't actually have to taste the stuff!

That looks mighty fine.  I love a good porter.  I'm a fan of the darker brews so I'll usually have a few bocks, porters, or dark ales and finish them off with a good lager.

Not sure why I started this thread, most of the beers listed I won't even be able to try. :?  Oh well, I guess can imagine how good they are.

Clotworthy is a  fine brew indeed. Belfast Lager is an odd one. It's lovely on draught, but utterly honking in bottles.

Mind you, I was in a spot in Dublin a few weeks back called The Porterhouse. They had their own stout, called simply "Plain", which had the advantages of a: Being beautiful, and B: allowing you to order at the bar by quoting Brendan Behan. I'll be having that, thank you.

If I had to have only one drink then it would be a tough call between Tim Taylor's Landlord (but only if it's served as well as at The Fleece Inn at Haworth) or Harvey's Best (but only if served as well as at The Lord Nelson in Brighton). There are so many others I like but these two would keep me happy for a long time.

If I could only have one beer then I would be very happy just to have Sam Smith's Imperial Stout.

Guinness for a beer (though that's my beer of choice for any time of year)

Jack Daniels straight will keep you warm when it's a bit chilly. If you're not hardcore enough just mix it in with a bit of coke and that's a winner right there.

yeah, i love the TT

TBh for me its just as much about where as it is what.  Love pedigree but never ever drink it out of burton as it just doesnt travel... although very few burton pubs get it right now either!   when its good, its very very good.

Its also down to the pub, we have the coopers arms in Burton which is little more than a house  with some barrels lined up in a room.  The old owners served kimberly classic straight from the barrel and it was divine... when i have had it elsewhere it hasnt been anything special

anyway, my all day sessions this christmas will probably be on Burton Bridge Stairway to heaven.  quite a light beer so perfect for the sesh!

It depends where I am for beer. I like Pedigree like Wez. I've just got in from the pub and had two pints of Guinness which I like at this time of year. Chec Budvar if we're talking lagers takes a lot of beating. Across the pond then bottles of Sierra Nevada are nice and if there available the micro brewerys.

Now if we're talking Whisky then I think it's only proper if we resurrect the appropriate thread!!

My winter warmer is generally Fullers ESB. It's dark, it's flavourful and it's a bit stronger then other for the winter warmth. But this year, my old man has just ordered a polypin of harveys, so thatll be my winter warmer (and hangover cure, and my bread substitute, and my everything else). And as already mentioned, a bottle of JD goes down a treat when it gets nippy.

my favorite cider has to be the westons vintage stuff, and the fact they now do it in 3l boxes for £6ish is even better

Lager: A bottle of staropramen or pilsner urquel.

Beer: A bottle of Hobgoblin or OSH will do me fine.

And then ofcourse, nothing spells christmas in my family than a bottle of Jaeger and some Ramazzoti amaro.

i think tomorrow i will be mulling some cider... but tbh cheap stuff works best for that!!  strongbow, dark rum, brown sugar, cinnamon stick ,oranges and cloves... simmer it for 1/2 an hour.... sorted!

some porter or stout. Old Station Porter being somewhere at the top of the list.... or if I'm going non-beer perhaps a good port wine, or a warm mulled wine!?

Some family was over today so I helped myself to a few Sprecher Special Amber Lagers.  They tasted very good but I couldn't fully enjoy them with such a full stomach! :x

the keystone didn't really sit too well with me last night. also a bad idea since i had a final exam this morning at 8. i'm looking forward to hitting 21 and being able to buy the good stuff.

Cheap beer is fine for its sole purpose - getting pissed off :P Its not like anyone drinks lager for the flavour... is it?

A good stout or porter- the darker and stronger the better! Going up to York over the new year, so will be having some good pints of Centurions Ghost... mmm :)

The York Brewery has some great beers, D&L (ex-TO), Brow, Davey and I were drinking them at the 3 Legged Mare last year!

That's a great pub! I was there with the missus a few years back, she really enjoyed it, although I think I preferred the more traditional pub (i.e. one with carpet) around the corner which also had York Brewery beers. I always say that Yorkshire produces the best beers, even though it would break my Lancastrian mother's heart to hear that.

I got a home brew kit(www.mrbeer.com) for christmas and I just finished brewing my first batch!  I did a pale ale for my first one to see how it turns out.  Once I get more experienced I'll move on to some malts with liquid yeast and maybe add some of my own flavors.  I loves me some dopple bocks, stouts, and porters.  The kit makes it super easy and everything is included.   8)
