Title: Gary Moore tones
Post by: Fikealox on December 12, 2008, 03:52:25 AM
Hey guys,

I'm looking for a set of pickups for my second ESP M2 maple. I have an M2 maple with A2 SMs in it, which I am absolutely in love with, but I'm looking for something a bit different to avoid total redundancy.

The A2 SMs are clear, creamy, smooth, and articulate. For the new guitar I'm looking for something a bit hotter (but not raging) with nice rounded treble (not harsh like a painkiller), bass that isn't too spongy, and an overall tone that's thicker and darker than the SMs, but without being grainy or mushy. I guess I'm looking to get almost "woman tones", or Gary Moore "loner" tones (which I can nearly get with the SMs, but lack of a tone knob hurts my efforts). Decent harmonic response would be nice too.

I've emailed Tim, but I'd like to hear everyone else's opinions too :)

When I mentioned 1980's Gary Moore to Tim he had no hesitation in recommending Nailbombs for my Charvel.  This is my effort at The Loner:

... slightly wobbly playing, but I think that the tone is pretty close.

Mark.

Woah, thanks dude, great playing and tone :D I'll add them to the list. I had Nailbombs in an LP a while ago, and didn't really like them; but then again, I loved Mules in my LP, then I hated them in my Gus G sig. BKPs really do highlight the importance of the tonewoods, so I think Nailbombs could go really well in maple and alder.

Thanks guys :) It's really hard to know what to go for in the vintage and vintage hot lines. I've sort of been leaning toward a hot A2 pickup in the bridge (maybe something wound in the ballpark of 10k), and a slightly lower output A3 or something in the neck (because I've found I neglect the A2 neck pickup because it wants for a bit of treble).

Tim just got back to me, suggesting VHIIs. The list is now standing at Black Dogs, VHIIs, and Crawlers. I guess it's time to listen to some clips :D The reason I ruled out Nailbombs is a bit silly... I basically would feel retarded if I didn't like them, because they'd be my 3rd set ;) It's easier to feel good about it if something new doesn't do what I want
