The Matamp 1224 MkV head looks very intiguing. Can anyone tell me more about it?
Also, does anyone know why it's only 30w if it has 4 EL34 power tubes?
Thanx! :)

I'm intrigued too...
I'm guessing HJM will be around shortly!

Just 'cause you can get 150w + out of 4 EL34s doesn't mean you have to!!If you design the amp to put less strain on the valves they'll last longer, but they give some of the feel of a 100w four tube head....without the crushing volume - so you can have your cake and eat it.they're still loud though. It's a bit like the BHP spec on a Rolls Royce - 'adequate'!!
It doesn't have quite the range of the earlier 1224 mk II, but it has more gain and kind of split channel operation (2gains and 2 masters) It really starts to cook when the volumes up as the power valves overdrive. They're worth a look if the standard Matamps are a little too tame!

Do you think one would suit my playing style?

I know you like gain and having played a Mk.V I know that they have plenty of that on tap!
My perfect amp would be one with the clean and overdrive tones of the Mk.II for rythym and the tones of the Mk. V for lead.
I also have a King Street on order.

It would be close - I hate questions like that.......It may be a touch modern sounding. They don't really sound like anything else, none of the Matamps do, you can get lots of tones that you hear and go...'oh yeah that's like xyz...' but they're not a Marshall or a boogie or any other amp you care to mention, they're a Matamp!
If you like an amp with a fast response, there's none faster than a Matamp. They're a pig to play, any flaws in your technique and they come out loud and proud......but that's good, it makes you practice. I find I can drink as much as I want and still sound like I know what I'm doing when I use a Boogie or a Cornford - they smother everything and you can get away with lots of bad picking!!
There are one or two dealers in the US, but I don't think there's one near you. I'd avoid Matamp USA/Electric Amp Co - there's some issues between Matamp and the US distributor......
