Title: Help : SS Amps For Extreme Metal.
Post by: WITH FULL DISTORTION on October 02, 2005, 04:52:25 PM
Hails Guys, i´m seeing my tube amp getting harder and harder to be bought from me... so, i guess i´ll give IT UP for the moment.
NOW , i want some help from you on the solid state(Or Hybrid, if that makes a real difference) amp Choice.

i play Death, Black And Thrash Metal.. and i need Tight Bass, Crunching Mids, and warm and cutting through hIGHS. Lots of distortion too.
what i AVOID : scooped middle amps, and harsh amps that do not have enough bass.

said that... which amp model and brands do you recommend?
i guess a 2x12 combo or in a last case, 1x12 combo wil lbe good choices. cause Heads will be more expensive, since i´ll have to buy a 4x12 cabinet to be satisfied.

i plan to use a Metalzone in front of the Clean Channel if i didn´t Like the distortion.

As a refference, i liked the distortion of the CRATE GX series amps.
the marshall valvestates 60,80,100 i found to be a little Harshsometimes...
so, thats it.
Hails and thank you for the help(In Advance)
J.P

PS - i´m asking for a moderate/Good price range, not a SS amp with equally price of a TUBE amp. ahahahaha

For metal, SS really does work - I used a Line6 SpiderII head earlier in the year and it really packed a punch for metal. The moderate Marshally tones were 'ok' but the clean Fender and HiWatt stuff was great.  There's a 75w mono version available now for £150, can't go wrong imo.

My mate also swears by the Laney SS range of heads with a Marshall Guv'nor into the front end (boosting the gain channel).

Theres always the Randall stuff of course as used by Dimebag Darrell (RIP), he got a GREAT metal tone with those things - of course he could play his ass of too, so that certainly didn't harm.

if necessary, i´ll ask my father to translate my ideas in a clear english. he speaks fluent.

So what about playing a hybrid amp with a hi-gain OD pedal in front? You'd gain a little bit of the warmth, dynamics and harmonics tube amps cut through with, but the clipping would still be solid-state: stiff and precise.

Weren't those sessionette amps supposed to me good. I am not sure about doung metal but maybe a suitable pedal could take care of that. I remember borrowing one years ago and it seemed to be very loud- maybe it is my memory playing tricks on me but they seemed to be reasonably priced.

A POD, Crown power amp, and cabinet would work. :)

Hails Guys and Thank´s For the infos
but i can´t decide yet.. You didn´t recomended me some brand/model of SS amps or Hybrid amps
Q:p
I Was searching the AVT thread, but they seem to bash those amps and they seem to not handle what i´m after.

i guess i´ll use either the metalzone by boss or the line 6 Uber metal.
if i dislike the amps distortion.

i´m thinking in a Marshall Valvestate 100 or 8 watts. or a laney tf series.
PLEASE recommend me somethign and talk about it
ahahahahah NO POD for me.
don´t like those simulator stuffs.
