Title: whammy pedal...what's the best one?
Post by: Perandor on December 24, 2008, 01:38:06 AM
Hi!  I'm looking for a whammy pedal to have some fun with, but mainly for Tom Morello style solo's, think Like a Stone and The Ghost of Tom Joad with the Boss.  What are the pro's and cons of the ones you guys own?  Thanks

Tom Morello uses the first one from Digitech. It also has a mediocre wah. The new one has no wah but alot of pitch shifting options.

The general consensus is that the Digitech is the best.

I once tried the whammy setting in a Zoom multi FX pedal. It was way too slow. The pitch couldn't keep up with the movement of the expression pedal.

their are two down sides to the digitech... it needs its own 12v AC powersupply and it sucks tone BIG TIME when bypassed.  The Boss PS-5 can be used with an expression pedal which can be run on a 9v dc and it also doesnt suck tone as much as a digitech.. but the boss just doesnt have the "mojo" that the whammy does.

thats my opinion.

Why not get one of those wah pads if you it sucks tone?

i dont quite understand that sentence, but a loop pedal could be used to get around the tone sucking, effort tho, ive been messing with my housemates.. i have decided i dont like whammys

Or the standard Cry Baby. Or the WowPad if you can't afford the Wowee Wah, but it's explained in the video.

Thats what I meant, sorry. and thanks Jonny.

I thought they called it a wah pad, but if it says WowPad then I am wrong. I think it would work cool with a whammy pedal though

http://www.glab.com.pl/true_bypass_wah-pad_en - That would clear the bypass sound up

I only said WowPad cause it was called the WoweeWah, I could be wrong. But it's a different wah pedal to the crybaby as it's not operated with a potentiometer.

More is explained in that video I posted.

Haha, misread sorry! Yeah, the digitech is generally considered the best, but its a big tone sucker, so maybe go for a Wowpad to put it on.

Well, Morello uses a Digitech WH-1, which is the original issue of the digitech whammy. Now discontinued, your best bet to get as close to his sound is the reissue version,  Digitech WH-4, which is the same thing with a few alterations. Im not quite 100% certain if these are the changes, but from what Ive read, the reissue isnt true bypass like the original, and there are a few less harmonising options on the original. Tone wise, the wh-4 sucks more tone, and sounds abit more digital.

I have a wh-4, and dont have that many gripes with it. My main problem is the size of it, it takes up a large chunk of my pedal board, though its pretty unavoidable, so you learn to accept that. You also need to know your theory to be able to get the most of out the harmonising settings, such as 3rd up, 4th down, etc etc. Other than that, I like it!

Im not sure how much Wh-1s go for on ebay now, but Im presuming itll be alot (quite rare now). The Wh-4 is £120 new, which is alot of money to be dropping on 1 pedal, especially one that gets constantly nailed as a 1 trick pony. You could look into the digitech ex-7. As well as having most of the settings on the whammy that morello uses (+2 octaves, +1 octave, +1/-1 harmonising etc), it also has a flanger, which morello also uses (Killing in the name intro, guerilla radio). Its also got a few wahs settings as well (crybaby setting included, which is morellos wah), and tons of distortion settings, its basically Morello in one pedal! It goes for around £100 new, so its less than the wh-4, and has more features.

And on the Wah topic: Vox wahs ftw  :P

That's the route I'm going to go down once I have abit more money. The tone suck is reallly quite noticeable.
