Title: Coils color??
Post by: ztevie on December 26, 2008, 08:07:22 PM
Are the coil color always black underneath covered humbuckers, or can it vary?

Does it matter?

They could be any colour for all I care IMO.

(I do hope I don't come across as insulting or convoluted there)

Or are you asking in case you think the cover doesn't suit and you need to remove it?

In that case you could potentially nobble Tim to wind on the bobbins of your desired spectral value if you were so inclined.

I am selling a set of chrome covered MM's... And a guy asked me this question, i guess he think about removing them and want to know what  the coils colors are...
I emailed Tim, but an automated reply came that they will be back 5th january, so i thought someone here would know a little bit sooner.
i could open them, but would rather not...

I have to apologize as I have absolutely no Idea as I prefer the look of covered coils.

I'm not so sure that anyone on the forum has removed their covers to find out.

I'm really sorry I can't be of more help but perhaps someone else can better enlighten you.

The coils may be FUBAR tbh, cause of all the shite that is used to hold the coil in place. Could be covered in wax, etc. I wouldn't remove them. But I would ask Tim if you, yourself (not Tim), could clean it up, i.e. if it were covered in wax

I've removed covers before from other mfr's and they have used silicone to hold the covers in place - was a right pain to get off a ruined the finish on the coils.

Good news is that BKP use beeswax so it's easy to clean off the mess - some kitchen-roll is all you need.  I've done this a couple of times with BKPs - the Cold Sweat is my LP had covers, but Tim did the removal on that one.

According to Tim, the standard colour for covered humbuckers is double black - it will only be different if specified when ordering.

THanks!! Just the answer I wanted... I was gonna rip 'em open tomorrow, cause this guy has been asking if it's possible. Now, I don't need to.. If he buy them he can do that himself, so I don't do that and make some mistake, ruining them..  :P

You can see by unscrewing the polepiece I think, and unscrewing one of the baseplate screws

So, got an answer from Tim today... Seems like covered bobbins can be either black or cream... I unscrewed a few screws, and took photos. One is obviously black, but the other is.... white? it seems to be exact color as the wax anyway, cause I can not see any other color nuances in that one.
What do you think? PIcs attached...
