Title: Rebel Yell neck vs Cold Sweat neck
Post by: LP_LOVER on January 05, 2009, 10:16:52 PM
Hi all,

What are the tone/eq differences between the Rebel Yell neck and Cold Sweat neck? Aren't they the same?

Thanks in advance.

I only have the RY neck so can't compare, but i read somewhere that that it was a combination of the Cold sweat neck and the VH2 neck.

Catalyst77:

The 'strange' thing is that it doesn't sound bright at all. It also doesn't have that clear 'mid push' on the G-string,
if you know what I mean. For example: A BKP MQ is way brighter and more agressive/clear in the mids.

Yeah, I remember reading that too.

I don't have an RY, but I do have CS & VHII neck pickups.  If the RY is somewhere between the two, then I'm not surprised you don't find it very bright.  The VHII is quite thick & rounded.

If it's any help, have a listen to my shootout clips:

the cold sweat neck has no mid push
it's more middy and modern sounding than the standard paf style pickups, that are usually scooped
it's more dimarzio sounding, I'd say
but not as middy as a "modern" bridge pickup, like a JB or something
it still has a very very slight PAF mid scoop but with really round and smooth top end
not even close to the huge amount of mids of a miracle man neck, dimarzio air norton, emg 85, dimarzio air zone, duncan distortion neck...

How do you feel about your RY?

Well......

I have been lucky enough to own and play around with pretty much the entire BK humbucker range (with the exception of the Abraxas and painkiller) and for some reason the rebell yell set is my least favourite!

Ive moved them from guitar to guitar trying to find a combination that i like and so far always ended up moving them again.

I now have the bridge version in the middle position on a telecaster but the neck is still doing the rounds in my les paul custom - it's def not bright or cutting and to be honest i'll prob end up taking it out and replacing it with something else.

I really like the Stormy Mondays or Riff Raffs in the neck position, the mules are great too.

Mm, ok.

The ultimate neck humbucker for me would be the one with a 'faster' bass response.

'faster', more liquid (less stiff) bass response

I guess this is a contradiction  :?

I just mean a faster bass response.

I received an email from Tim just as the Rebel Yell set was being released saying that the CS and RY neck were identical he later retracted that comment saying the RY neck was a mix of the VH2 and CS neck model, I believe the RY neck underwent some changes but was originally just the CS model.

I could be wrong but this is what i've been lead to believe.

Thanks James.

Why didn't you go for a matched HD set? The bridge is fat with compressed treble, I would have thought that the neck's brightness was to ensure a balanced EQ

Ok.
