Title: Which pup for the neck pos?
Post by: Jaekae on January 10, 2009, 11:38:47 PM
Hello

Im getting new pickups for my Ibanez RGA321F Prestige, that i run on a ENGL Screamer 50 amp

Im getting a nailbomb for the bridge, but what should i get for the neck position?

I play all kind off rock up to heavy metal, mostly use neck for cleans and solos only, or when a smooth tone is needed ( SCOM intro, some satriani etc)

And btw will i be able to use the 5 way switch with bareknuckles? ( coil split )

Cold Sweat. Sure you can use the 5 way switch with BKP's just get them with the standard 4 conductor leads.

Yeah I ordered a Cold Sweat too, it is fantastic for anything fluid or smooth that you want.  :)

+2 for the Cold Sweat. I love mine for any lead/cleans.

Gonna buck the CS trend and say: Abraxas! My favourite neck tone.  8)

CS is a very popular neck pickup - its a great match for any of the high output BKP bridge models, does cleans & leads very well.

But I'd also give serious thought to the Nailbomb neck (i.e. get a Nailbomb calibrated set) - it has a really nice lead sound & balances very well with the NB bridge.

Have a listen to my shootout clips: clean (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=11927.0), CS lead (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=11952.0), NB lead (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=12572.0)

Tim has done an excellent job creating the matched sets, I highly recommend not mixing and matching unless you're very sure about what you're doing.

+3 I think, although I've never actually tried Nailbombs.

I was a mixer-and-matcher until I tried the Cold Sweat set and realised how well they complement each other!

Not saying I'll never mix-and-match again, but the calibrated sets are a great place to start unless you know you don't like a particular neck or bridge model.
