Title: Last riff you learned to play...
Post by: MrBump on January 12, 2009, 10:45:35 AM
... in keeping with the other topic, what's the most recent thing your learned?

For me, to my shame, I think that it was "You Shook Me All Night Long"...  One of those things I always "knew", just never got around to getting down accurately.

Mark.

I think it was Nile, Execration text.

I rarely learn riffs anymore though, I mostly just make stuff up. In fact thats very very nearly all I do.

In a way the last riff I learned was one of my own. Planned it out, then learned to play it :D

I'm not a big one for "learning" riffs, but I did accidentally figure out Hells Bells a few months back (and then gave up trying to similarly conquer Back in Black )

I was in Drop C at the time so I just played some Pull Harder On The Strings Of Your Martyr by Trivium but I spent most of the time playing In Dying Days by As Blood Runs Black.

The main riffs from Deliverance by Opeth. It's the fills and solos I have trouble with.  :D

Not sure if you'd call it a riff but learned most of Eugene's trickbag. Four months of RSI but I got there

Rock 'n Roll Train

Gotta love that riff, and I'm hearing it everywhere right now ... even the corporate presentation used for advertising the company I work for has it. Not sure if thats a good or a bad thing ... :s

The Hells Bells intro has to be the greatest riff you can play with just two fingers ...

NO... it was the riffs from The Darkness - I Believe in a Thing Called Love

Pistol Slapper Blues, although not so much the Riff as all of it.

It was a long, slow christmas.

More of a revision really;  but for me it's been the main bass/ chord riff from that smooth Jazz classic 'So What' .  8)

Standing in the Rain - Wishbone Ash - although not just the riff; all of it bar the solo.

I have had to learn Blowin' Free by Wishbone Ash. I played the bass line years ago but now that I am a guitarist and the others all thought it would be nice to do, I set to it.

I wish I could learn some Wishbone Ash songs, but there's no sheet music available and I'm pretty hopeless at picking things out by ear.

God put a smile upon your face by Coldplay - bass riff that was though, pretty tricky with the slide and string skipping in the verse, and bass is a struggle anyways, but it vibrates nicely :O)

There was a tab book, but it was a limited print run, and there are no more left, much to my disappointment. All the Ash stuff I know has been worked out by ear by me or my guitar partner in crime, with gaps filled in by the odd internet transcription.

Yeah, I'm always on the lookout for a copy of that book.  But well done figuring it out!  :)

Cheers Philly. It took a bloody long time though, and irritatingly, on seeing a copy of a live dvd, I realised I'm playing the main intro riff in completely the wrong position. But I've learned it now, and I'm not changing!  :)

That's a good point, I've got loads of Wishbone Ash DVDs - I should pay more attention to the "hand shots"!!

The Curse of Castle Dragon - Paul Gilbert

Though I'm sure I'm doing half of it wrong at least, and shan't be continuing the learning process until I have a guitar I'm happy playing with again... all my current lot are great for rhythm and chords but when I play lead lines on them it feels wrong somehow... :s

'Hellaluhja', original by Peter Pan Speedrock, covered by Batmobile.

Cool riff, not too hard but the timing is a bitch. It sound a little like Slither by Velvet revolver.

I worked out the acoustic riff for Stephen Fretwell - Run.  It;s the music they use for the Gavin and Stacy theme tune, but that's not why I learnt it.

EDIT:  Oh yeah, when I was just paying about las night I was strumming a few chords and ended up playing Knocking on Heaven's Door.  Never even wordered what the chords are to it before.  I know it's dead easy, but there you go

New Noise by refused, which we decided to cover quite a while ago. I can't say I've really spent that long trying to play other people's riffs, I prefer to try to come up with my own. Would be useful for me to do more practice, though, but where does the time go?!

Nothing wrong with chordal stuff !  Listen to Micheal Schenker on the Live album 'Strangers In The Night' , Malcom Young - or Eddie Van Halen,  to be reminded that well puntuated rhythm playing is 'high art' indeed ...  :)

( And rhythmn players have to keep it up longer ! )

Social Distortion - So Far Away. 4 chords but its so fun to play. I "figured out" Ball and Chain as well, I can sit there strumming chords like that for ages just going through the lyrics in my head :)

The most complicated thing I've learned recently is KsE - Fixation on the Darkness and a bit of Rose of Sharyn. Not really my thing though..

That's cool to play but I hate tuning my guitar down a half step.
