I'm using a Jazz bridge right now (SD). It's just a little thin and too bright sounding compared to what I'd like. Otherwise it's fine with its EQ and output. Which BKP should I go for..? I read up a little about the Mule, Emerald and Riff Raff but even with clips it's not always easy to pick, I'm not very familiar with Les Pauls.
This one's brighter than a lot of LPs out there, quite loud accoustically, and very full sounding. So a pickup not so bright would be better I believe?

THE SD jazz is one of the brightest sounding humbucking pups that I have tried, I would say that any of the vintage BKPs would give you what you are looking for, I have Mules in my Eggle Berlin ( which is a bright guitar ) and they sound brilliant!

Either mules or black dogs will do that in the vintage range, not sure about the rest

Right now it's a toss between the Mule and Emerald then.

I have an Emerald/Mule combination and really like the sound. The Emerald has really nice harmonics without being too bright. For a driving or rocky blues tone it is great. If you want the more classic blues tone (cleaner, but still thick), then the Stormy Mondays or PG Blues are great pickups. The Mule is a fatter pickup than the SM and I always feel that it is the classic rock pickup.

So where would the difference between the Emerald and Mule be..? Emerald is a little more powerful and slightly less thick than the Mule?
For some reason I picture the Emerald as a little louder and a little brighter, and lighter on the bass. Am I at all close? That's just my imagination and nothing else :lol:

The Black Dog has more thicker, more low middy tone (still with cut/clarity). It's great for classic rock and blues, but so is almost any BKP. It all depends on the guitar, set-up etc.

I highly recomend Cralwers in a LP. I have NEVER heard a better combination than my Ehiphone Heritage loaded with Crawlers. (I got a ibanez loaded with nailbombs for example) They can do any style and sounds great thru everything I plug it into. Search for my clips in the player section if you want. (It might be recordings with more gain than your style ect. but I think I made a blues-recording somewhere.)

I'll second the Crawler recommendation. They are, as the name might suggest, voiced with muscular blues in mind; they've got a distinct bump in the mids (compared to a classical PAF-type spread, as you'd find in the Mules or the hotter Abraxas), and are not over-burdened with highs. :) And, as noted, they're very versatile pups in general.
That said, if you want something not as hot, I'd think the Mules or maybe even better the Stormy Mondays oughta be great for classic blues tones. (Not so much bump in the mids there, though, as the slightly hotter-than-PAF BDs, I would think.)

Well I called over and I got advised by a real nice guy who made me hesitate between the Mule and Riff Raff... the slightly more powerful and edgy Riff Raff won and I just ordered one! Can't wait!

Got it today! The LP is at the tech though so I won't get to try it until later... though I do have other guitars...
