Here is the spec:
Old stock 2-piece Mahogany body (1.5" thick - more SG/Melody Maker)
3 piece mahogany/wenge neck
rosewood fretboard
Grover tuners
Uncompensated Vintage wraparound bridge
1962 Gibson Jnr wiring loom (would be the SG shape in 62)
BKP91 black dog ear P-90

a few more old bits going on it as well, like the backplate, truss rod cover, strapbuttons and pointy bits for the control knobs

Nitro finish by Mike Lennon... very happy with his work and he will be getting more of mine to do, these are the pics he sent me before sending it back

Was that a custom order Wez?  What does the buyer think of it?

Nailed it! Amazing! It screams raw rock!

the bridge is one of a selection of old wraparounds i have here at the moment... definately light but there is one thats much lighter

The finish was supposed to emulate a gibson as well as possible, once mike had the shade of yellow right on the front he started slowly bursting reddy brown to build up the colour you see - he used the same tint on the back but less of it.. there is no black in this finish, nor should there be!!

yeah, twas a custom order but i think i might get to hold onto it for a few weeks of "settling in time"... at least i intend to - if i had built this as my first guitar i might never have built another - juniors suit me

i keep loosing count on how many i have done.... mid 30's i think, possibly close to 40 now

How many have you made now?

a quick count says 34 finished and about 5-6 abandoned before the finish line - some will be completed some were abandoned for good reason ;)

What is the price on one of these?
Title: Re: Less Pull :P
Post by: WezV on January 15, 2009, 10:42:25 PM
the price on this one reflected the fact the future owner supplied all the old parts for it, atm i am not sure what i would normally charge for it - but i dont repeat myself too often anyway so everything gets priced up individually.  probably be around £900ish but chances are i wont do another for a while

i did this and my recent lapsteel as a remedy to the head scratching caused by Roo's multiscale baritone, sometimes i need to do something simple to ground myself... i know it wasnt simple for mike though, he really did his research to get the finish spot on, i still find it funny that he spent weeks researching something gibson probably spent minutes thinking about

As ever, Wez, a fine job! It's not the kind of guitar that gets my juices flowing (but hey, I have a remedy for that!), but it's a really, really nice looking piece of work! The finish is exquisite, but it's not just that that makes the guitar look so good, you can see the quality from just a few pics. I'm sure it looks and feels amazing in the flesh!!!

Beatiful guitar there Wez. I think I would hold on to it too for evaluation/fact finding reasons.

Yes yes yes yes yes yes.

The best guitar I have ever played was a 57 junior in sunburst. And with that guitar striking such a chord, I've loved them to bits since.

At the minute I'm quite settled with gear, but I do want a 24.75 scale instrument, this does not help, Wez, not one bit.

That is a mighty fine job, aren't you a bit worried about the headstock shape there Wez?

I guess because I like that guitars finish, I should accept that I like my Goldburst's look too

horse - you need a lapsteel!! ;)

aren't you a bit worried about the headstock shape there Wez?

yes and no, it is subtley different  and i have made sure with the rest of the guitar that it would not be misidentified as a gibson even if it lost its logos ... i couldnt really bring myself to put any other shape up there

Prefer SG juniors normally but that one is quite appealing. Love the play on words name too.

Are the knobs normally that far back? Maybe it' just the angle of the photo but they seem a long way away from the bridge to me.

I have to say that it looks stunning.  Quite a time machine there!  The more important question is how does it sound?  Juniors usually have great sustain and some undefinable extra grit going as well (if I compare my 59 Junior to my 60 Special there is a difference because of the neck pickup cutting into the neck joint I am sure).  The finish looks amazing, really professional and just like the Gibson look.  I'm a big P-90 fan, as you know, so this is just a perfect guitar as far as I am concerned.  Great job once again.

Take a look at the link to the original and you can see that they are.  It is because of the wrap around bridge that they look further away then on a regular LP.

The more important question is how does it sound?

I only had a quick play last night and it was clear i need to raise the polepieces to match the radius better but it was a very promising start.  It sounds pretty much how you would expect, nice amount of grit, loads of sustain... i am happy with that

only thing i was considering changing was the scratchplate, i went for one from WD and chose the thicker black plastic... i like the look of it  like that but i think the originals were much thinner

Let me do some digging at home. I was sure I had an original LP Junior single cut scratchplate, but there are many places that it could be hiding.  I have 4 big plastic boxes with parts in them, so it could be hiding there!
