i was thinking of getting a flanger, since i prefer EVH's flanger sound to his phaser sound. in the past when using a multi effect on synths, i've also preferred the flanger sound.. and furthermore, i understand that you can set up a flanger to give a chorus effect.
so anyway, it seems like the ADA flanger is the pedal of choice, but its a little expensive(!) to put it mildly.
what do people think of other flangers? i want one that can be set up as a chorus, and with analogue circuitry... is the only choice the MXR? (i'll be staying away from the EVH signature model, for obvious moral reasons, unless it sound significantly better than the stock model). maybe theres something else I should consider?

I have the MXR M117R & it's a nice Flanger. It's not an effect I use often, but it's nice to have on the board.
FWIW, there's nothing wrong with the good old Boss BF-2...

It may not be what you had in mind but how about a Line 6 Liqua-Flange?
-
ive been waiting for the BYOC flanger for some time now, its been on the site as "any day now" for the last 14 months! - from what ive heard it will have ada characteristics - and will prob be a lot cheaper.
I hear good things about the EVH flanger; i like the idea of dialling eddies fair warning flanger sound.
I believe that TC electronics do a good flanger/chorus pedal. - but i think its aimed more toward chorus.

looks pretty cool, though i'm somewhat sceptical of its digital processing

saw the same thing on the BYOC page this morning too!
i suppose i'd prefer a flanger/chorus aimed more in the flanger direction, though because of TC's reputation maybe i should check it out.

8-bit gwEm scared of digital? It can't be! ;)
If money's no object take a look at the Fulltone Choralflange as well. I heard a guy running one in stereo into 2 Boogie combos in a pub in Walthamstow a while ago and it was very nice.

I had the MXR EVH flanger for a few weeks. Sold it as it sounded too digital for my liking.

 i must say i've never thought much of any digital guitar gear i've tried. the only digital thing i liked - vox tonelab - broke :(

seems to be discontinued, but a new model coming out. are you back in london then mate?

interesting comment - its meant to be analogue itsn't it? i suppose flanger can sound synthetic at times

you see - its all about the flanger!

i got rid of a few recently.
I had a boss RBF-10 micro rack flanger that was alright and definatly did chorus sounds well but i always found the flanger sounds a bit more subtle than i like... worth it if you can find one for about £40, one on ebay at the moment for £70 and thats pushing it a bit
I also had an old 70's carlsbro flanger that was pure vintage awesomeness and the size of a small tank, for some reason i sold it. completly different to the boss, more flanger/phaser wheras the boss was flanger/chorus if that makes sense
some comparisons of the usual suspects here

I like my EVH flanger, dial in your own sound then hit the preset button for the EVH unchained setting. i prefered it to my boss flanger pedal, soon to be on ebay.

Indeed it is - I think synthetic is a better description. It really wasn't as 'chewy' as I wanted.

I have an Mxr 117 Flanger and a feature it shares with the ADA is being able to turn off the width and manually set the point that the sweep starts from. This allows you to get the same effect each time you hit the button
However another one worth looking at is the HBE Frostbite Flanger - based on the old ADA design
-
ive heard much much more good about the MXR EVH flange than bad.
-
i have an old Arion flanger. plastic case, but it's fairly sturdy, and the sound is very good, if perhaps a little noisy. but then, old analogue effects aren't known for their silent operation! the only other one i've tried is the MXR EVH, which i felt had a more predictable and cleaner sound. it was very good, but i think i'd get the standard MXR, don't really think some stripes and a pre-set button are worth the extra cost.

Nope. I did pop to Wales to see the folks over Christmas and the New Year but haven't been in London for a while. I saw that band back in 2006.
You might be able to get a deal on a used ChoralFlange. The new version will have pitchbend vibrato, certainly not to my taste.

i've just noticed the stereo electric mistress looks good for the money... any idea if it could sound van haleny? or is it mainly for those psychedelic moments?
-
bah, i just ebayed the normal mxr flanger ;)
for a bit i was tempted by the ibanez one as its smaller and 9v, but hopefully the mxr one will get the synthetic brown sound i want anyway and i like the construction of their gear

I was playing with the MXR flanger alot last night and this morning. Its a great flanger, but has quite a distinct synthetic sounding tone indeed. It doesn't do really organic sounding stuff, or go really wild/experimental. Nevertheless it easily nails the Van Halen/jet engine flange... and further more it has some other nice tones - a flangey chorus, a filter, and you can get a sort of phaser out of it too, plus a tremolo.
Maybe an Ibanez would be a nice compliment to it, it seems like the Ibanez offers a more subtle sound, with some self oscillation too.
I'm pretty happy anyway, I won't be getting that Ibanez unless its really cheap.
