Which band is your favourite to see live? I have an odd love of seeing trashy metal bands (avenged sevenfold, bullet for my valentine etc.), which i don't necessarily ever listen to other than when i go to see them. does anyone else have this or anything similar? Of course iron maiden were amazing...
P.S. sorry if this topic has been up before!!
-
there are a lot of local bands which rock hard in most scenes. i love a packed out small gig atmosphere, and atmosphere is what makes the difference between live and recorded music.
the white stripes were really good, really bluesy.
-
Personally, i thought the White Stripes sucked when I saw then, but then that was the main stage at Leeds (2001?) - I just thought they were pretty dull. Its just two guys on stage in front of 50,000 :?
I imagine in a club they could be pretty powerful and fair play to them, I don't think they ever really wanted to play anywhere but clubs.
-
If there is one band you HAVE to see live, it’s Rammstein.... their live performance and show cannot be faulted or bettered in my opinion. Ive seen them 3 times and they never disappoint. Killswitch engage, Meshuggah, Mudvayne, Opeth and arch enemy were good too.
-
I feel so lucky to have seen Alice In Chains the few times they came over the pond. An exceptionally powerful band every time.
My friends and I went so crazy at the Forum Kentish Town that Mike Inez saw us and climbed up the PA stacked at the side of the stage then jumped with his bass onto the balcony to headbang with us.
Blew me away to have him join us while still playing - arms around his shoulders moshin' away.

As for pure hero worship - seeing Iron Maiden at the top of their game on the Seventh Son tour at Wembley - the culmination of my boyhood devotion. I've seen em since and been disappointed both at Hammersmith and Earl Court.
-
Probably got a bunch of stuff on here people don't know. I haven't been to a lot of popular band concerts.
Best show this year was probably Nomeansno!
Opeth is great live, too bad the crowds here are not my favorite. Mastodon is really good live too, and Cephalic Carnage! Relapse bands are usually pretty good live. Megadeth was super loud!
One of my favorite nights was Blood Brothers, Lightning Bolt and The Locust. Not my favorite bands, just a good show and fun night.
I would like to see Sabbath, Metallica, Iron Maiden and millions of other metal bands. I wish I could of seen boat loads of 60s/70s bands like the Beatles or Cream or Led Zep. One of my favorites I'll probably never get to see is Victims Family.

For atmsophere and pure energy then Black Label Society at The London Astoria, this year! It was a mad house in there. I've never seen a band send a crowd that crazy before.

Iron $%IN Maiden
(WHERE IS THE BLOODY HEADBANG SMILIE??????) PDT_021
-
Iron Maiden and Audioslave, pure sex :D
Not to mention Biffy Clyro an ace gig and when 'There's no such thing as a Jaggy Snake' came on, we went mental in the pit, and then got beaten up by really small emo ninja girls :( And we are big anyway :(
Dillinger Escape Plan too, at the Dillinger gig I came out with footprints on my back, a knocked out gilfriend, a huge bruise on my cheek and with a motley crew of beaten up and knackered metal head friends :S Still an ace gig though! The next day at school was hilarious 'All sit down now, 1, 2, 3...ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!'
Andy!
-
Children Of Bodom, Black Label Society, Meldrum, Queensryche, Megadeth, Anthrax and Motorhead are the best bands i've seen live, they give off enormous amounts of energy that alot of bands just don't do
-
On the heavier side, the gigs I've been to with Motorhead and Zakk (in whichever of his solo incarnations) have always been great. Zakk can be a bit of a jerk sometimes, I think, but he performs like a man possessed, no question about it. And Lemmy is God, natch :) I've never seen Maiden, but I caught Bruce on the Chemical Wedding tour and that was great as well. Bruce is a great frontman, full of energy, and well deserves his legendary status.
Taking it down in heaviness a notch, when I've seen the Bevis Frond or Man (!), they've always been high energy as well. (Haven't seen Man since Deke Leonard quit again, but I saw them a couple of times in the last decade and amazingly they just smoked). And Gov't Mule are still great, of course; Warren and Matt keep getting better (though I think the band had more energy and power with Woody). Richard Thompson has always put on pretty good shows, as I recall, too. Takes me a few songs to get into his gigs sometimes, but by the time he finally lights off into an epic jam, I'm always completely sucked in, and then I leave thinking "Wow!".
But the best shows are always in places with less than, um, say a 1000 people. Little places, anyway! Big places just put too much of an energy-barrier between performers and audience. I often enjoy shows in big places, but they don't blow my world away (well, Branford Marsalis jamming with the Dead in MSG in '90 might be my one exception to that rule :). I remember seeing Phish in a tiny club in 1991, and then in a 20k-seat arena in 1993, and they might have played as well both nights for all I know -- but they were blinding that night in the little place -- I'll never forget it -- and just seemed OK in the giant shed. I think it's real hard to sound more than just OK in a giant shed. Kyuss just about pinned me to wall in the Underworld in Camden (I think it was there!) one time -- it could only have been less brutal in Wembley ....
-
The Mule were pretty good......First Satriani gig I saw (Extremist Tour) was great, he's not been so good since. Don't laugh...Nuno with Extreme at Rock City, played all the classic solos with a dry, medium gain overdrive, nothing to hide behind, and every note was perfect!! Shame about Gary on that gig....
Dream Theater, almost front row, right in line with Petrucci's rig, Manchester 2000, those guys can really play! And great tone, pretty dry that night too.
For spectacle, Pink Floyd at Earls Court, 1994, nothing can touch the set, lights and production...excellent
-
Giving my age away here, I saw Led Zeppelin at St Georges Hall, Bradford (holds about 2,000 max), and I was in the 20th row :)
More recently, I loved the Who when I saw them a few years ago. I just saw the Stones again 2 weeks ago. I have tickets for Cream at MSG - I saw them at the Albert Hall too, I am hoping that Clapton will play the signature 335 this time (a Marshall stack might be hoping for too much  ).
Peter Gabriel has one of the best live shows I have seen, not a guitar god, but great stage presence and excellent music. Anyone who likes blues and bluesy rock should check out Chicken Shack - Stan Webb is really the man, or go see Buddy Guy if you can - he is the man that Hendrix said influenced him and you can see why.
I have also seen good and bad shows from a lot of bands (just proving they are human!). I have seen Van Halen with DLR and Sammy Hagar where they really rocked, and then I saw them after Sammy and they sucked. So much so that Eddie played an instrumental to win the crowd back!
I see lots of concerts and over the years I have seen most bands (though I was meant to see Rammstein earlier this year, but missed it because the guy who had the tickets was ill on the day! I actually just like to see the bands live.
THe show I kicked myself most on was Dire Straits at Bradford Uni in the 70's. We could have opened for them but took the top of the bill spot on Saturday (as you would, this was a Wednesday gig and no-one had heard of them at the time). After a couple of numbers I knew we should have opened for them (especially since they were looking for a band to open for them on their tour!). Oh and to add insult to injury, on Saturday we had the stage rushed by a buch of irate lesbians because we were playing 'sexist' songs (what's wrong with sexy? Its a fine line between clever and stupid).

He's got a point... anyone would enjoy rammstein live! even if ur not into german industrial rubbish! especially if you're a pyro
-
AC/DC
Metallica
Motorhead
U2
Rolling Stones
Brian Setzer (Stray Cats)
Toy Dolls
-
I've been to many many many many concerts. I was a concert junkie. I can tell you one of the best live bands and one of the worst live bands.
1. One of the best was Alice Cooper. He puts on a great show. It was like a heavy rocking musical. Costumes and everything...
2. Worst was White Zombie.
Fear Factory also disappointed me by playing 2 songs and walking out way back in the day. I have no respect for that..
-
grrr, alice cooper played wembley i think back in july - i knew i should have got tickets!
-
I have seen lots of concerts in New Orleans :( , and in Gulfport . The very last ones were BB King, Kenny Wayne Sheppard(this was the third time), Dickie Betts, Dr. John, and some other great acts on the same bill. That same week Def Leppard in NO,( I had to see Vivian Campbell). And this same year Metallica, and Godsmack(3 times) also in NO. It will be a while before I get to see anything around here. As consolation I am going in november to see U2 in Atlanta. You are very lucky indeed. :)

Even if it’s not your kind of music, you can’t say they are rubbish, they write good songs and they've got one of the best drummers in metal! They've done well to break the world market singing in their native language.
It’s not just the fire that makes them good live it’s the energy and stage presence they have... And the fact that they play all of their songs spot on!
-

Ah, yeah, plus 1 for Alice. Only some him once, in Boston some years back now, but it was exactly as Shag101 describes. Nice to see the spectacle back/still in rock. :)
Oh, one more (though it doesn't really count since the lineup doesn't exist anymore): Allman Brothers in the early 90s with Dickey and Warren. I saw 'em several times back then and they were really incredible, IMO. I'm way too young to have seen the band with Duane, but based on the recordings, I think the Dickey/Warren team took them more consistently to higher places than the Duane/Dickey team (though I'll leave open the possibility that the Duane/Dickey peak moments were better).
Oh oh! Yet one more: Clutch! Great live shows! I dig the guitar sound, too. Check 'em out ....
-
really small emo ninja girls :(
that would be a hell of a name for a band!
i agree with the Alice Cooper people, it's 16 years since i saw him, but it was fantastic. best live band i've seen, at least that sticks in my head, was Love/Hate. Skid and his Bud cross will never be forgotten!

Avoid my post in the 'Tones you once thought we're good' thread, then, lol.
-
Rammstein eh, never seen them but i;ve seen Oomph!! and Subway to Sally, they are very much Rammstein style, Oomph!!! i think have been going a longtime now, very fun band :)
Nevermore are a brilliant live band, as are Dark Tranquility.... they seem to give it 120% and be pretty much flawless
-
one of the best gigs I've been to was InMe (I dont even like them, I went with a mate) at the Northampton Roadmender, tiny place but it was a good time! Also Velvet Revolver put on a really good show at the NEC, Janes Addiction at Wolves Civic hall is also one of my best!
-
dude i'd love to see janes addiction live, that would totally rock out!!!
-
jane's is awesome, possibly my favourite band (apart from strays :x ) i got a dvd of them playing the Roxy in 87, its seriously good. i couldnt make it to see them on that tour, i wanted to but i figured they'd come round again sometime...doh!
Now i have to make do with The Panic Channel (again: :x ), but Satellite Party is all good. :D
-
Pink Floyd at Earls court in 94,
Dream Theater at Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall in 93 (with Kevin Moore in the band, IMHO they have not been the same since he quit) and Rush last year at the NEC.
-

Yeah, I dont think strays is that good compared to their old albums. I still like a few on strays though

up to the Riches, then turn it off
-
haha yeah. I kinda like Wrong Girl though :D
-
Mastodon at Download were freaking awesome.
I'm going to go see them in swindon, in a 380 person capacity club. It's tiny. BOOYAH! :D
-
saw Mastodon in a 500 capacity ( i think) in Newcastle; played well but way too much bass in the mix for the kids (as it seems to be nowadays).
Incidentally Tom, check this if you havent seen it:
http://www.xfm.co.uk/article.asp?id=110688
they've upgraded the quality since it was last online. And if you want any Jane's boots, or videos (including the flashmob they did in london) - i have all sorts, just pm me

ahh cool cheers! Ive decided Navarro is one of my favourite guitarists now, seeing him live was amazing!
-
My fave live band has to be dragonforce, ive followed their career right from the start and its amazing how well they are doing now.
I went to one of their first gigs and there was 5 people in the audience, now they sell venues out!
Lots of running about on stage, putting on a real show, the way bands should be! screw those bands who stand still and don't put on a show
-
I prefer small gigs but the best things I've seen were:
Glastonbury 2004? Paul McCartney - Whole crowd singling along
Manchester 198? B.B. King - Left grinning ear to ear. Incredible
Chicago 199? ????? - House band in a blues club. Had me in tears
Glastonbury 2002? Roger Walters - For the Folyd covers Snowy White on guitar
NorthShields 199? Arlo Gurhtie - Great stories. He should be a stand up commedian
Most disapointing:
Glastonbury 199? Page & Plant - Led Zepplin by numbers. Left half way through.
Anyone else at any of those gigs?
-
Europe are always good live, Whitesnake and Dio too.
Best ever gig may have to go to Queen, or maybe SLADE who were just beyond amazing
-
oo i'd kill to see queen! my mum always mocks me cuz she did and i can't!!!
-
Steve Vai was pretty entertaining. He did all kinds of crazy stuff. He even sang Zeppelin and did really weird things with his voice. Plus, seeing three guitarists running around on stage, bouncing off one another and playing note-perfect three-part harmony at around 16 notes/second is kinda interesting.
I know this guy won't be that popular around here, but Tommy Emmanuel is the best live entertainer I've ever seen. The guy has such great rapport with the audience. He's so much better live than not. I can't possible listen to a whole CD of his at home, but I'd happily sit and watch him play live for hours.
-
From the shows i´ve SEEN :
Vader
Krisiun
King Diamond
Dissection!
-
oo i'd kill to see queen
My Mrs saw them earlier in the year with Paul Rogers singing. From what she said they sucked. Rogers can't reach the high notes and Queen can't play Free covers.
She said Brian May wasn't playing his original guitar but a copy. Wonder if he still takes the original out on the road?
-
Europe are always good live, Whitesnake and Dio too
I saw Dio on the Holy Diver with Queensrÿche supporting. Best bit was when the Queensrÿche guitarist walked to the front of the stage in the middle of a big solo and someone in the audience grabbed his foot and wouldn't let go. A roadie can to rush on and rescue him. He kept playing right the way through. Very Spinal Tap.
-
/\ tommy emmanuel was amazing, i agree
i'm not a great judge of what a good gig is and what a bad gig is, i tend to enjoy them unless there is something badly wrong...
GOOD:
chilis : dublin 2004, great live act, no good if you don't like them though!
pixies: same gig, same comment
white stripes: belfast 2004. this band are great live! at the time of the gig i had only heard a couple of the singles off "elephant" and though meh, these guys are nothing special. but live! they had a really bluesy vibe going down, fantastic!
futureheads: can't beat geordies singing in 3 part harmony for a fun afternoon!
BAD:
kings of leon. i don't know, these guys just lacked something live. pretty dull gig :(
-
chilis : dublin 2004, great live act, no good if you don't like them though!
I would have absolutely killed to see the chili peppers around 1989/90...too bad I was 6 years old. But I have some live gig videos from that era, when they play Uplift Mofo Party Plan stuff, its absolutely incredible. I saw them on the By The Way tour and it was good, but the old school stuff is where my heart is at!
Floyd Pepper, I know Brian May endorses a Red Special copy made by Andrew Guyton (link HERE (http://www.guytonguitars.co.uk/index.php?id=rs)), maybe it was one of those that he was using?
-

Willo, I see you're in Newcastle. Boy did I miss some great bands at the Newcastle Riverside (500 person venue) at the start of the 90's...
Nirvana - Didn't bother going to see them, was sulking because I'd missed Mud Honey.
Pearl Jam - Didn't realise they were on.
Black Crows - Didn't know how good they were until after they'd played
Smashing Pumpkins - Got my dates mixed up and missed them.
The Riverside was a fantastic venue, small, sticky carpets, good PA. It's now sadly, a dance club. I played there several times in the mid to late 90's. My favourite back stage graffiti was the Rolf Harris' Rolf Aroo. :)

Boy, did you miss some good bands! :o
My biggest miss is Jane's Addiction. They played Leeds festival when i went there, but I wasn't a fan at the time. Then when I got into them, they toured the Strays album but the nearest gig was Manchester and I'd literally just moved into my uni digs. So I passed it up, reasoning that there would always be another time.
Wrong!
They split soon after...

:D I still remember even now some 26 yrs later !! AC/DC on the "Back in Black" world tour play there 1st gig in the UK [Hammersmith London ]after the death of Bon Scott. [ he died after there last performance at the Hammersmith Odean as it was then ] The atmosphere was electric the crowd were so wired that a full hour & half before the band took to the stage, the Angus chant went up every 2 minutes by the time the band took the stage the crowd were at absolute fever pitch !! The P.A was Deafeningly loud & it still wasn`t enough !! the crowd sang louder than the band for the 1st 3 numbers !!! :P Utterly insane !! Loved it !!!! :P
Motorhead on the "Ace Of Spades" Tour was a corker
Black Sabbath on the "Heaven & Hell" tour was very disapointing dul very very dull !! :(
Saxon used to put on a good show as do Rush great band the gigs they did last year were outstanding ! :D
Bruce Sprinstein on the " Born in the USA" tour at Wembly stadium was excellent
Queen on the "Works" tour at Wembley Areana [ the last gigs they ever did inside] was an outstanding gig to
The Most S**T gig has to be Deep Purple on the" House of Blue light" tour was disgracfuly bad as was Ritchie Blackmores Rainbow some 10yrs before.
:D 8)
sorry for this being a long post i got carried away !!!!
-
Boy, did you miss some good bands! :o
I've missed Dire Straits, U2, Satriani, and Van Halen (on their one and only tour of Australia ever). :( I think the only band I'd rather see live than those is the Jimi Hendrix Experience, but I was born too late for that gig.
-
Rammstein are just awesome live. Unfortunately they don't play Buch Dich anymore, but thats probably because of the number of kids in the audience. Their last album (Reise Reise) only clicked how good it was when they played the tracks live.
Outside of rock music, the best other performance I've seen was a Reggae singer called Luciano. The atmosphere was electric and he came onstage doing backflips across the width of the stage. I haven't seen many Reggae gigs unfortunately. Freddy McGregor was also very good, but then he's one of Reggae's oldest performers now.
I really wish I'd seen Pink Floyd at the Live 8 show, as they sounded so tight. David Gilmour was especially on fine form and it sounded better than the gigs featured on Pulse.
-
The mAKE uP were the best band I have ever seen live - the singer Ian Svenonious is a real showman and gets the crowd going, they would play an improvised set dipping in and out of songs, building up to a frenzy and taking it down again, on a good night it was like the band and the audience were as one each pushing the other to the limits.
The best one was at the Edinburgh Venue - a small place, rammed... everyone into it and having a good time - Ian was walking on people's hands (like Iggy Pop) and hanging off the ceiling.
They are touring as Weird War now - the gigs are still amazing but don't have the same intensity.
-
Best live band in the uk has to be Biffy Clyro, the amount of energy from just 3 people is amazing, plus the drummer is astounding and sing backing and even lead on some choruses.
Also saw Alkaline Trio the other day at the Birmingham Academy, they put on a great show, but i was so much more impressed with their support. This lil asian dude came on stage and set up a projector and a screen, soon followed by an acoustic guitar. i instantly thought- wow, this will be random. Turns out the guy is Mike Park and he is freaking amazing. the first half of his set he played along to a dvd thing, as the topic changed he went onto a new song, about 5 or 6 songs were done, just him, no talking (not even a hello at the start) after the show finished he turned to the audience (he was side on at the start, to see the screen i guess) and started playing properly.
here be an mp3 from his site, its such a shame i cant find any albums of his around Glasgow...

Alkaline Trio the other day at the Birmingham Academy, they put on a great show
I thought they took themselves way too seriously. they didn't look like they were having fun when i saw them - they were acting all sinister, with the scary blank faces, and slow stage movement. i want alkaline trio the punk band back! its like they've gone gothemo :?

not so! everyone look like they really had blast. matt skiba was moving around, right up to the croud during dan's songs too. plus the drummer is always entertaining to watch
-
Definatly The Cure. Seen them at the corn exchange (fan only gig) Never will be virtuosos, but music is so intense in front of a small audience. I have several "live" Rush albums and really wanna see them, cos they are the tightest band ever. If only they toured the UK more than once a decade.

I have to side with indysmith on this one. I saw the trio numerous times and while I love their music, they arent a real high energy band on stage. I remember when I saw Taking Back Sunday open up years ago for the Trio and thought TBS out shined the trio by far.

fair enough, but they kicked ass last saturday :) and i know what you mean though, they were pretty dull on the metro halloween dvd.
