So I put a modest bid on Ebay, not expecting to win at all, and now it would seem that I'm the proud owner of a Cort G290 for much less than half the new price  :)

No but I have done exactly the same thing with an amp and a pedal.In both cases I got a major bargain so hopefully you will too.

I have a bid on a Gibson acoustic guitar this weekend - keeping fingers crossed!

It's one of those I will bid only so much and if I get outbid that's ok but if I get it for what I bid then I will be delighted

Those mid-range Cort's are very well made guitars, for the price. Hope it all works out well !

Yeah, well done! 

Sometimes I bid on things and it's almost a relief not to win if the price gets up to my maximum, but it's always nice to pick up a bargain.

I know exactly how that is!  I used to be addicted to ebay and I would put low bids on a lot of guitars.  It was a little nerve racking knowing that you might have a NGD times 6.  The only comfort was knowing that if I won the auctions I'd be getting bargains and could sell a few on at a profit and have one or two to keep.

Actually I was bidding on something just a couple of hours ago, not sure if I really wanted it but it was a potential bargain!  Didn't win.  Phew!
