Hey, i think im getting rid of the TT combo because of its lack of versatility+being to loud at 7 watts for having in an apartment. I was thinking the Egnater Rebel 20 which you can scale from 1-20 watt. Seems like the right thing, it also has alot of versatility and has an fx loop. The problem is, im not convinced it has enough gain. Im not interested in nu-metal, more classic higher gain nwobhm, 80s metal, etc, but i feel even the TT comes short in that area, so would an Egnater Rebel 20 be good? Its the only amp i found that has 1 watt setting AND versatility, but if there are any other smaller amps that has a good amount of gain id like to hear suggestions. Preferrably 1 or 2 watts.
-
I have a Cornell Plexi Seven which has three modes, 7, 2 and 1/4 watt. I think it sounds fantastic but it has perhaps a too classic/vintage type tone for you. To me it sounds more Robin Trower, Hendrix and early Van Halen than Iron Maiden, Randy Rhoads etc. It's a super amp and built by a total gent; maybe worth a demo if you can find one?
-
Cornford carrera/harlequin ? or my personal favourite the suhr badger or fargen mini plex or maybe something else power scaled? Martamp would be a good bet - talk to martin and he would be able to give you pretty much most things.
Rebel does look good also
-
Zvex Nano? 1/2 a watt I think but I've heard loads of great clips. I sort of want one, dont know if I can justify £300 on such a small amp though when I could get a Blackstar HT5 head for £220..
-
Hughes and Kettner Cream Machine
-
Blackheart Killer Ant 1/2 watt - about £99 - put Harma drive tested 7025's in both positions and you're in high gain territory
-
A booster and/or EQ for your TT? means you won't have to really crank
-
Why not a cheap second hand high gainish marshallesque head like a Laney AOR 50 and get a Ultimate Attenuator and have done with it?
Small amps sound like small amps, not one of them sound right to me nor have they 'felt' right which was even more crucial.
I'm sure the Egnator you are considering isnt cheap, and neither is this option, but it's the one i'm currently heading towards.
-
+1 on the cornford carrera... as long as it's not too dear, as long as it has enough gain, and isn't too loud (5 watts through a vintage 30 is still pretty loud, though it has a decent master volume).
-
Maybe try an overdrive pedal. Im sure you could get nice gainy 80's tones with some sort of 808 in front? Then you could probs save money and still be satisfied.

Dont think it has a gain knob meaning i probably wont get much distortion. Hm, the Egnater that i mentioned, still no good? Should still be cheaper than selling my TT, getting a powerful amp, + the attentuator. Cornfords i think are both to expensive and to strong at 6 w(?) The Cornell is probably to classic rockish for me:/ Dang, this is hard.

Mr Vex says it get's crunchy as hell, I've not heard one personally though. I'd be real keen to though, have to say.

I've wanted a dedicated doom amp to go along with my fuzzes, this looks just the ticket.
It would mean I'd have to buy a 24.75 scale guitar though

Oh crikey, that looks awesome in the Green livery! :o
-
I tried the rebel at the store a few weeks past and immediately ordered one.
1 watt is still not very quiet, but the amp has a master volume so it's possible to play at bedroom volumes with it (but then you don't get the power tubes pushed).
the gain amount was enough for me (I play mostly technical / folk metal - with not that much gain) so I guess that its good for NWOBHM. it has a JCM-ish sound with maybe a bit more gain.
-
Agreed with Philly, that "Green" Matamp looks absolutely stunning!

So how do i get an amp that CAN be cranked in an apartment then?

I use an attenuator (koch Load Box-120 II) and am pretty happy with it, although some tone freaks says attenuators "suck" tone.
In any case when you lower the volume the speakers behave differently, and more importantly your ears behave differently, and "cranked tone" is among else volume dependent (thats just my opinion).
on the bright side, there is a Canadian company called London Power (the guy who patented "power-scaling") that has an amp line with power-scaling that goes down to milliwatts. that should work for you (although a bit expensive).
http://www.londonpower.com/amps.htm
I never heard any of their amps but they look good on paper.
-
Hehe, never heard an attenuator, but sounds like an issue, the problem i feel is that tone is sucked when the amp is not cranked and getting an attenuator to get a cranked sound at the cost of some tone sounds a bit backwards, and to bad those canadian amps were so expensive, probably what i needed:)
-
What about the Martamp Goldstar TT (high gain version) with Power Scaling at £540?
You can have it with an EL34 for 10W or a 6V6 for 5W, and it will scale right down to nothing, and still sound like a big amp.
Another alternative is the Roadstar TT Cub, at 1W at £420. This is a proper push-pull amp, so it has an amazingly massive sound.
Apologies for self-promotion!
-
Damn forgot about them....yeah Martins amps are great..
-
It's kind of been mentioned above already, but you'll not get the speaker movement which really contributes to "cranked" tones at anything other than cranked, loud volumes. Of course, you can get the tube distortion on the power amp by the methods above (I really don't need an amp, but I am kind of GASing for a Martamp for home use!). Personally, I like the feel of the speakers really moving some air, but sadly this is just not possible at house-friendly volumes!!

The Blackstar 5w head is awesome - check out the latest 'Guitarist' review (UK). Sounds just like a cranked Plexi (and more) at bedroom levesl.
-
get a pod or similar modeller or a cube, use the headphones. it's the ONLY real option of playing in an apartment, without people going ape on your ass for being too loud. ANYTHING with a speaker attatched to it (unless it's a sealed cab.. which you cant hear anyway, cos it's well... sealed) is going to be too loud to be used effectivelly, especially if you got real anal neigbours or a small kid.
get a rehersal space, move somewhere where you can actually use a speaker cabinet or get something that will sound good through headphones .. or kill your neighbours

Haha, well, i understand what you mean. I now realised even 1w would be a bit to much. Im probably getting a martamp with power scaling, but i dont have the money after buying the Warpig SG from Feline which im longing to get my hands on. I was thinking the Black heart Killer Ant at 1/4 watt as a cheap solution until then. It wont have the metal, but since the Warpig SG is loaded with Warpigs (duh) i might get satisfactory gain, besides, im most into older metal, not todays. The neighbours arent really to bad, when i played bass a year ago or so it was much worse, wasnt to uncommon that someone was banging their balls... er fist to the wall. Ill think about it a bit more, but i dont like headphones to much, uncomfortable for my strange ears after a while.
-
ooo, you ARE gonna be happy with that SG.. plays and sounds GREAT!
i know what you mean with uncomfortable headphones, but realistically, that's as close as you're gonna get. cos a cranked amp is .. well a cranked amp. cant get that at low volume
-
Powerscaling is great but as mentioned, you need to get enough power to keep the speaker moving.
You could do what I did. For £100 and a bit of planning you can build a decent isolation box that fits a 1x12 in with room to adjust microphone positions.
I have the amp head, monitoring speakers and recording console on top like it's a table. I wouldn't do it unless you have good monitoring speakers.
It tames 18w at full tilt very nicely
With the powerscaling knocking of the final 30% I can play late at night really quietly without any disruption to anyone.
-
So the movement of the cab is really that important? Hmph, ill think of it, maybe ill go the headphone way and at the same time get a recording set-up, that could be a sweet compromise since ive always wanted to start recording stuff and get some great riffs recorded  And Davey, thats good to hear, i heard quiet a bunch here had played just that guitar and i only heard good stuff which is comforting! Im just waiting for Jonathan to receive the payment so that he can ship it here 8) On the other hand, im only about two years from moving into a house hopefully if everything goes as planned. I can just see myself cranking it in the middle of the forest! 8)

I like that as soon as I saw the word forest and a youtube link, I knew Abbath and his pals were a-coming.
Immortal are great. There are actually people who take them completely seriously too, which is astonishing.
-
tell me about it hahaha. i actually know a lot of people who take that stuff 100% seriously. it's .. idiotic
i cant see that they take themselves too seriously. not with videos like that. and photoshoots like theirs. i mean, they're on the list of the most ridiculous black metal photos.. twice. and on the list of the most ridiculous black metal videos.. twice haha. besides, noone but gaahl and the freaks from mayhem take themselves too seriously
though immortal slay live. saw em on metal camp and they put on a show like you wouldnt believe.
yeah, forest and cranking an amp, just beggs for abbath and company :D
-
Haha, well, my brother is an immortal fan although he doesnt take the vids to serious, i like one or two of their albums, i used to like black metal (just a very few bands though like Dissection), but now i pretty much only listen to classic heavy metal, nwobhm, stoner/doom, and some power metal, i guess i softened up a bit haha;) I doubt Immortal take those to serious, maybe they did back then, but i saw the guitar lesson with abbath and he seemed really laid back and cool 8) like those two smileys.
-
i've met a ton of them and yeah, most of them are laid back and cool. some do have a huge ego, but for the most part they're cool
-
I haven't played the Rebel 20 but I am an Egnater user myself
I have the M4 preamp with various modules and they sound fantastic.
I run these through a Martamp 10w Goldstar Power amp that Martin made for me
The Rebel 20 is kind of based on the SL2 module which is like a Marshall JCM800 sound and a little hotter.
You may find that you will still sometimes want to push it with a pedal for certin tones but the core tone is excellant.
I will run the Gothic warpig through it before I ship it off just to confirm how they sound together
I have long held a belief in lower powered but killer sounding amps as being the way to go in the future for guys to use at home.
The 50w or 100w amp just cant breathe at really low settings in my opinion.
I went with a separate preamp and power amp route as if I needed more power I can just hook up a bigger power amp( I also have a Marshall 9100 50w per side one if I need it)

Sure, cool:) Not really neccesary though since i can get a custom Martamp + cab for the same price as the Rebel 20, which sounds like a more preferrable option, but go ahead, im always indecisive with things! Ive heard alot of good stuff about the Rebel 20 no doubt. Thanks!

noone but gaahl and the freaks from mayhem take themselves too seriously
Having spoken at quite some length with Gaahl and Attila on a few occasions each, I'd say they take music immensely serioisly, but they're extremely cheerful chaps themselves. And Necrobutcher and Blasphemer are just drunken dafties!
For the most part it's the gus in the underground that take themselves ultra-seriously. A lot of the modern USBM guys particularly and folk like Caina.
It's a worry when at the end of the day, they're all spawned from a mediocre English band who were TAKING THE PISS
-
i know.. it IS the underground bands that take themselves more seriously than anything. that said, i dont give gaahl the time of day anymore and i'd gut king if i had the chance. they do take their music seriously, but i just cant stand the sight of them.
i had the chance of meeting a $%load of these guys over the last two years and like i said, for the most part they're great people to be around and drink with and i maintain contact with a few (that werent TOO drunk to remember what the hell was going on.. hehe, but really great stories spawn from that :D) but as soon they start pulling stunts like king did and gaahl just following suit, i really dont want anything to do with that sort of people, even though colaborating would mean europe wide renown in a lot of metal circles.
also, yes. most of these bands did start, because they were taking the piss out of similar bands. and that's pretty much how the band i'm in right now, started :P though it evolved from a bedroom project that was really just taking the piss out of the utter seriousness and wannabe high society 'we're the $%ing best black metal band in the universe' to a quite sophisticated black metal band with an (almost) full roster... i'm not too sold on the 'panda' facepainting bit and i doubt i'll ever be, but we're doing the silly nicknames LOL .. the style is very close to Anorexia Nervosa, if you know of them. black metal (with strategically placed blastbeats and those 'god i'm freezing my bits off' riffs) and classical music. kind of like satyricon meets bach :P just more eerie and ghostly hehe

Okay, so i decided to get a Rat Electronics modded Epi Jr Combo (theres a guy "andydokken" who sells this on ebay). Thanks to MrBump who made me aware of the Rat modded amps. The amp has powerscaling amongst other cool stuff, so i can try that function out so i know if it works for any future amps aswell (martamp for example), and it was cheap aswell, 279GBP including shipping to Sweden, expecting to get it next week since he just finished building it today, so thanks for all the suggestions, we will see how this works.
