Title: the most understated and underestimated guitarist of all times
Post by: dheim on January 20, 2009, 06:07:46 PM
personally i think that Paradise Lost lead guitarist Greg Mackintosh is actually one of the most precise living definitions of COOLNESS (in a strictly musical sense...)... he's not the one that made me buying my first electric guitar but it's for sure the one that made me play the way i do(i know it's not exactly a compliment for him but you've got the point, i think...)

am i the only fan out there?

He is pretty much the last guy that I expected to see in here, but when I saw him I agreed immediately. So, yeah. Correct on all counts!

Well it would be rather dull if you put his name in the thread title!

Looks like an ESP of some sort.

I think Richard Z Kruspe is cool in rammstein and Emigrate. he is the epitome of playing simple stuff but effectively.

Better get this in before Roo does - Sir Paul McCartney

what guitar is that he's playing ?

it's a Mayones Regius 6 LH custom with (strangely enough) a single EMG (81, i fear...)... i'd take an H-H version with far more appealing pickups (BKPs...), but it's a veeeery sexy guitar, with neck-through construction and a very minimalistic look

I think Richard Z Kruspe is cool in rammstein and Emigrate. he is the epitome of playing simple stuff but effectively.

absolutely yes. Rammstein is more about brute force, but his playing in emigrate is very interesting...

Better get this in before Roo does - Sir Paul McCartney

to be honest i never thought about sir Paul as a guitarist... i know he is, of course, but i have the mental picture of him with that weird violin shaped bass guitar... and always preferred Harrison!  :)

Mayones! I knew I recognised the shape and headstock, I just couldnt think of the name of those silly 11-ply-neck-making-yet-bad-review-having nutters.

Ahh I thought it was a caparison for some reason...

And Andy: Grr!!!! "Sir" Paul McC*ntfeatures: Talentless Yeti, yes; underestimated or understated? HELL NO! Just thankful the irritating prick hasn't been on the news lately. Tosser.

It makes my blood boil, it really does.

For me it has to be Ty Tabor of Kings. I was listening to the Dogman album today and the guy has everything, sweet leads, amazing rhythm and crushing yet beautiful tone. Genius

I've been struggling to think of anyone to add to this thread, but can't argue with that one!

A friend of mine is endorsed by Mayones, two actually, their whole band are. Never seen them other than at festivals since they were though, so I've never had a shot of their bass or guitar. Keen to, though.

I don't know much about Mayones.  They look OK but I wouldn't be keen on having a guitar with a name that sounded like Mayonnaise.   :|

+1 on question...

But on 11 pieces neck I'm not sure why the dislike (in deed I saw only 7 pieces in their site, but I looked very quickly, so...)
Think untill 7 pieces it's ok, but have no experience about, if there is a problem, please tell me so :D

Its a fairly distant memory (couple of years at least) but I think they get half praised half slated on HC. I may have to go and remind myself...

Re - to Malcolm Young - he's getting more recognition nowadays, I was reading up on AC/DC in some guitarist magazine and I think it actually spoke more about Malcolm then it did about Angus!

+1 for Malcom Young, makes the (sometimes) hard seem easy. A Rhythm machine! He's the reason I am always playing little muted string hits in the middle of all my riffs for the chk-chk-chk sound he continuously beats out, without a doubt the biggest influence on my playing. That and the fact that I am no where near good enough to emulate his brothers lead playing (although I think Angus says Mal is a better player than him).
He does seem to get a lot of industry recognition though, I seem to recall Dave Mustaine waxing lyrical about him once.

+2.  Ogre Tones has to be one of my fav albums, Tys playing is immense.

kaki king is probably the best guitarist ive seen.. her playing was faster and more accurate than paul gilberts, but she finger picks everything so its going to be, not that shes all about speed.

I've read about this lass in a couple mags but never listened to her so just looked her up. First thing I got was "Playing with Pink Noise" which was just her arsing about for three minutes and boring as hell. Then I got "Can Anyone Who Has Heard This Music Really Be A Bad Person?" which I really like. Kinda a bit like a less developed and faster moving Earth.

Which brings me to;

Dylan Carlson - Earth; Just flat out fantastic sounds. Fantastic. Also the man that bought the weapon that killed Kurt Cobain.

playing with pink noise was one of her first songs, and the first one i head by her in about 2004 or something.. its reli impressed me when i was 18.. but since then she has done some really awsome stuff. cant wait for her to come back to the UK again.

i'm sure the thread starter is an amazing guitarist... but (perhaps) predictably for regular BKP forumers, I'm picking Montalo from Witchfynde

Couple of eclectic ones....

Martin Taylor (jazz guitarist) - saw him live and you would swear that there were two guitarists playing - how he manages to play such intricate bass and lead lines at the same time I just don't understand!

Big Jim Sullivan - in the 60's there were two 'go-to' session guitarists - Jimmy Page and Big Jim (Eggle Legend named after him) - if you ever get the chance to see him playing in the pubs in West Sussex GO! - he looks like a hippy Grandad but boy can he play! Any style: rock, blues, jazz, country - recommended!

Sorry for late reply.
Closest I can describe him is, imagine Adrian Legg, Michael Hedges, Steve Vai and Stanley Jordan in some bizarre melting pot. Elements of Tommy Emanuel but much more subtlety IMO. He's never flash for the sake of it, plays some beautifully haunting yet impossible stuff.
Some vids and tracks are here http://www.jongomm.com/music.html (http://www.jongomm.com/music.html)
and here http://uk.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=jon+gomm&aq=f (http://uk.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=jon+gomm&aq=f).
"Temporary" is probably my favourite track of his, favourite solo is on "Hey Child".
Well worth a listen, and a really nice bloke  :)
