:?
my pickups arrived, but i think that something's wrong with the "additional request" form... i didn't emailed tim for this and i won't, because this is not a complaint, just something i'd like to share...
well, i ordered a set of MQs and they're absolutely gorgeous in their gold finish, shiny as a mirror...
i bought a set of cold sweats in black finish with golden screwpoles and a couple of days after i asked tim if it was possible to add a logo engraving... so they arrived in black finish, with logo engraved (and a scratched angle but i don't care, they look nastier this way) and standard nickel screws... i believe because tim's not making new pickups every time there's an order and he has got some already finished... so the only engraved set in stock had got normal screws.
last but not least i bought a warpig in black finish. and got a very nice battered, distressed and STANDARD warpig. no real problem (i certainly won't ask tim a substitution because i love the "normal" warpig look, and this is even "nicer" than my other two, with its battle scars...) but simply it's not what i asked for!

You should let the guys know the order wasn't right - they can then fix it, and make the process better for the next customer :)
-
you're right, maybe i should...
-
yeah, they dont offer some single coil covers as standard (chrome and camo) and i ordered the camo cover for my trilogy. it came with a black one, but i phoned tim, explained what happened and he changed it swiftly. he doesnt oversee every transaction, how could he, so there's bound to be a mixup, due to honest human error

+1 to that.

I think there should be drop-down boxes for all the custom options you can have when ordering. That way people who don't browse the forums will know what custom options are available.

^I approve this message. That would be a good addition for the new website overhaul if they haven't thought of it already.

Fair enough, but you can already specify pickup position, string spacing, 2 or 4 conductor cable, leg length, 5 different humbucker colours, 10 or 11 different humbucker covers, 5 different single coil covers, magnet stagger.... that's more than most manufactuers offer.
You can't cover every custom option - "alnico 8 magnet, battle scarred black with 3 gold screw poles, 3 black allen poles and my mum's name engraved in one corner". People would get confused.
And you can always just phone up....
-
Imagine how many people would come here asking about all the stuff. Which sounds better, EMG style corner engraving or the Bare Knuckle Pickups one :P
-
But people might not even know what options are available, it doesn't mention pole pieces, for example, and if people don't know that there is the option for change then they miss out on customizing the pickups even further than already possible. It'd be handy to see all magnet types available too.
I'm not attacking BKP, just giving suggestion as to what would make the site easier and clearer to use.

I know you're not attacking BKP, but I don't think they should be giving different magnets and polepieces as "standard" options on every pickup. It's getting into "Design Your Own Pickup!" territory, which is completely ignoring Tim's expertise.
If the BKP Shop becomes just a Menu of limitless options, people will end up buying pickups that sound like shite then telling people they sound shite, which is bad for business. "My Alnico II Warpig is muddy!".... well duh!
And as Will has said, the forums would be full of questions like "what magnet works best with long legs?" and "does a gold polepiece sound better than a nickel one?".....
Tim has spent ages designing these pickup models the way they are because they work that way. If he thought, say, the Cold Sweat worked equally well with an Alnico V magnet he'd have made it like that. It could be that you phone up with a specific requirement and an AV CS is exactly what you need, but at least that's under Tim's advice.
(I know I'm exaggerating a bit, but just trying to make a point! )

you're absolutely right, i don't want to have too much freedom of choice when it comes to functionality, as i assume that someone who knows damn well his work already found the right mix of features to make the thing sound good... (alnicoII warpig! i'll ask tim for one of those...)
anyway it would be nice to add even more aesthetic options (that don't affect the sound!)... screwpole colour, for example, or a couple more warpig styles... it's just a suggestion to make an already excellent choice of pickups even better (well, i don't believe that ANY pickup maker can vaunt such an array of completely different machines...)
-
Having had my rant above, I was going to add that the Ceramic Warpig should be a standard option, because loads of people play them - but I just looked in the shop and you already can choose an AV or ceramic magnet for the Pig. :D
I think there should also be an AII/AIV choice for the Stormy Monday, as both options seem to be equally popular (and equally valid). Maybe also an AIV/AV choice for the Mule bridge, but that's probably less essential.

To add to the confusion, we here in the US, and probably all non-UK customers, have to go through a 3rd party to order, adding another layer to the process. There's a 4 week wait for the pickup, if not in local stock or special order. The return process would be a nightmare, I imagine, if things didn't arrive as ordered. +1 on a heads up to Tim. I'm sure he'd want to know about it and look at it as an opportunity to improve customer service as opposed to an attack on his products.
-
I live in the US and never have gone through a 3rd party. I wanted a special pickup last week and spoke with Tim, we agreed on it and I ordered through the web page. Pickup was ordered on the 13th and everything was here by the 24th. I don't think I would have got it any quicker from a US supplier.
-
i never have to go through a 3rd party.. mainly because no 3rd party has ever heard of BK Pickups over here, so i dont even bother with stores here, apart from buying strings and picks. everything else is done online and it's done faster, better and with much less hassle.
so, for anything out of local stock, always deal with BKP directly. that's my suggestion

Wow, that's wierd! I emailed Tim about a ceramic WP and he told me to special order it from Luxxtone, where I had bought my NB and MM. How did you work out the £/$ conversion? I'd much rather order directly from BKP.
-
I didn't, I just put down my US credit card number and let them work out the exchange. It might be because I used to live in England and have known Tim a long time, and started ordering before there were too many US dealers.
-
I received my BKP set last week, with their gorgeous custom finish! I ordered one black etched battle worn bridge Nailbomb with silver allenbolts, and one chrome etched neck Cold Sweat with black allenbolts, and I got exactly what I asked for!
But prior to that, I wondered if Tim could manage an order that special, and yes, he did...

it sounds interesting :)... can you post some photo?
-
Yeah, I'll post it asap.

I'm sorry, I can't post the pics, I don't know why it doesn't work... :(
