Title: Nailbombs vs Stock in Ibanez RG
Post by: HJM on October 07, 2005, 12:49:42 PM
Same guitar, Ibanez RG550 maple f/board, Line 6 Guitar Port, Slo100. No EQ. First is bridge, then neck HBs. The stock bridge isn't too bad, but the neck...well listen for yourself!

The tone difference is clear but not the most imporant difference. The big difference is that really good pickups can set the place on fire. The sound comes to life. I've noticed this comparing my BKP equipped guitars vs. stock guitars. Only my stock Reverend can match the BKP equipped guitars. Other stock guitars I've recently played: Gibson Les Paul Studio, SG Standard, Fender USA Strat. All lifeless. Same goes for my Dean Psychobilly; great pickups but lifeless. (The GFS pickups are deffinately getting a rewind)

It's not as much of a difference as I expected, how the pickups react in  live, through an amp and with a band is completely different, recorded the difference is pretty clear still, but not as much. It kind of reaffirms my view on the Seymour style of clip comparison, these sort of straight a/b clips have some use, but a pickup in a track situation gives a better idea of how it will sound live.

the stock Bridge IBZ pup is not good. regular is the right therm
the nailbomb bridge is tight, organic and Full Of Midds and excellent Highs.
and the neck stock ibz pup is .... it sounds like itīs out of phase or the switch is causing it a thin/bad function sound. in other words. Hollow and Without Sustain
HAhahaHAAhhaHAHA!
And the Nailbomb neck is Fat, gorgeous and organic too.
i didnīt think the nailbomb neck could get that fat in the neck.
ahahahahahaha
HJM can you do the same clip with same riffs and same eq, but with the miracle man set guitar?(if you have it)
Hails
J.P

AND THANKīS FOR THE EXCELLENT EFFORT in showing the tonal characteristics of the Nailbomb both neck and bridge

ps - is that an ilusionr that my ears are tricking me or the nailbomb neck seem ot have more bass than the bridge one? or you just adjusted the neck one (on the 3 low strings)higher than the bridge one?

Great comparison, the differance is pretty obvious. The Nailbombs sound so muich better to my ear. The more I hear Nailbomb clips from the likes of HJM and leppermeesa the more I want one for my HM Strat!!

For me it's the open and organic sound you get from the Nailbomb. The other pickups in the guitar are going to be two Irish Tours to handle the clean parts. I think that should be pretty versatile.

Nailbomb bridge is killer.... mine is the best sound i;ve ever had from a guitar.. (and i;ve owned far too many!)

I found the same problem with the stock pickups on my RG... The neck was awful! The bridge wasn't much better either. When I took them apart they are made from very low quality components, brass base plate which was bent and poorly applied coil tape which was revealing a large amount of the coil windings!

If anybody thought this was really useful, I could do some comparisons of Mothers Milk/Apache/Irish tours, by swapping scratchplates over??
