What effects do well in the FX loop of an amplifier?
-
mainly reverb, delay, and any modulation effects.

FX loops can differ a lot in different amps. Some loops are pedal level, some rack level, some can do both (e.g. most recent Marshalls). Then there are serial loops and parallel ones (that blend in the effect pedals and retain part of the original tone), which behave very different, too.
I found that usually what works best with amps is a good rack unit, where you can adjust the input AND output levels, so you can make sure that the amp gets just the right levels of undistorted signal into its power stage, this can be crucial for dynamics, clarity and punch.

my marshall is from 1994, does line level, instrument level, parallel and series. I'm a lucky dood. :)

it depends on the effect a lot of the time as well. if the effect has the headroom to handle line level its ok to put in the effects loop. try them out.
TC electronics said with their nova delay which runs on a 12v powersupply it will safely run on a standard 9v effects power supply, however if you do that in the effects loop it may not beable to handle the high signal level. But if you use the reccomended 12v power supply it will be fine both infront of the amp and in the effects loop.
I do remember than in that same statemtne from TC electronics they had a go at the flexability and sound quality of Boss pedals... and their ability to deal with line level signals properly
