Title: Thanks to whoever it was I got on the phone!! Riff Raff content
Post by: Pierre on January 26, 2009, 01:23:36 PM
Well almost two weeks ago I called BK for some advise as to which pickup for the LP would be better... It came with a JB which was way too bright and screechy... I'd swapped it out after ten minutes, it was all my ears could take

Anyway I figured I'd treat myself and get a BK for the bridge pickup, as I'm quite happy with the SD 59n otherwise. So I did some research and hesitated with the Emerald, Riff Raff and Mule... I called up BK and they told me that in a very mid heavy guitar, quite bright, I'd be better off with the Mule, and that the RR was quite similar, but with a bit more edge, power and brightness to it.

Well I ended up ordering the RR and it's EXACTLY what the doctor ordered! The LP was at the tech's when I got it so I put it first in the Charvel M4 and it was INCREDIBLE in there, so much I'd like to order another but the £364 Gas bill kinda prevents that  Maybe for graduation.
Anyway in the LP it's just what I ordered. It could do with a being a tiny bit brighter but I am after all used to Strats... I also rewired the LP with better tone caps and treble bleed caps on the volume pots as I like it... Strings high (I used to think I used a low string height, but everyone lately told me it was more like slide height) and off I go a'rockin'. Les Paul is finished, sounds absolutely huge and plays like a dream!

So thanks a lot to whoever it was I had on the phone, I'm sorry to say I forgot to ask, but it was a real helpful conversation. It takes a lot for me to spend more than the £30 or so I usually pay for Seymour Duncans but in this case I really believe it was worth it, and I'll do it again too once I get a better amp than my AOR...

Now to pay that damn bill :(

I've got no recording equipment whatsoever, and if I did they'd be the first things to go anyway in these times  *insert obligatory modesty statement about lack of skills*

Indeed I do, was one of the first things I considered.

It's not too dark. It's not 'not bright enough' either. For a LP it's actually quite a bright one. Another way of putting it would be that the Riff Raff is taming it quite well, but allowing its natural voice through.

With the Charvel it was a lot rawer. Thinner sounding of course but not in a bad way. I really liked it. It had a Duncan Alternative 8 in before though which is a bright pickup, hence why the difference was day and night.

hmm
I have an alnico 8 in my Holy Diver now and it's definitely way brighter than it was with alnico 5

And in the same pickup it will be.
The Alternative 8 seems to be a brand new wind, and it's pretty dark sounding despite the A8. It's not 'too' dark, but it's dark. My Charvel is also quite warm sounding so it wasn't a good combo. The Jazz bridge is back in and kicking ass. But the Riff Raff I think is still THE pickup for that guitar... just sounded incredible.
