Soooo... rigs that you thought got that sound but didn't
First LedZep album, I just assumed it was all Lespaul and Marshall when it was in fact all Tele and Supro/Hiwatt.
All those big ass chords in AC/DC, Malcolm who with a Gretsch?!
-
Led Zep example is a famous one.
Early ZZ Top Billy Gibbons (such as Tres Hombres) - his "Pearly Gates" '59 LP and a Marshall stack?
Nope.
He used a Brownface Fender Deluxe for most early recordings, with a lot of Strats and Teles. Plus Pearly for some things of course ;)
For example, La Grange is a '55 hardtail strat (middle position) for the rhythm parts, through the Deluxe, plus Pearly for the solos.

Woah that's news to me! :o Consider me schooled! 8)
-
Another one is Dimebag Darrell. Some people think he used his Warhead on Reinventing The Steel and at shows. But from what I've seen in an interview from his former tech, he used his RG100 and Century heads for everything up untill his Krank endorsement.
-
David Gilmour, comfortably numb solo. People thought it was his Strat through his rig. but turned out to be a Gibson Goldtop LP with P90's straight into the mixing desk.
-
Or Jeff Beck "Blow by blow"LP.In those days,i assumed it was his Strat, even though there was a LP on the cover...But the biggest shock,at the time, was the LedZep I...a Tele and a Supro?!When you see Gilmour playing on a Gretsch or a LP ,you realise he will always sound as "Gilmour"...
-
'Cause we've ended as lovers' on Blow by Blow was done on his 1958 Seymour Telegib 8)

Most of "Blow by Blow" was recorded on his Tele/Gib on which Seymour Duncan had fitted the first "JB" pickups.
Quote from Seymour Duncan himself about the JB pickup... "The 2nd reason was to give Jeff the output and tone when using a Marshall head that can be pretty clean when plugged directly in. 3rd, I wanted to make something special to give Jeff a distinctive sound that he used on "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" on the "Blow by Blow" Album produced by George Martin that also got Jeff Beck a Grammy"

Looks like Lew beat me by 41 seconds :ctf2:

haha  you were more informative though ;-P

The Darkness first album - i really would have never believed that was recorded straight into a Mac!
Metallica - Master Of Puppets: I always thought it was an EMG Explorer into a Mesa Mark whatever. Turns out its a Invader Explorer into a Mesa preamp slaved to a JCM800... so much for the classic Metallica EMG/Mesa tone I guess.

You aint kidding!! Check this tone out http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vcoQuQ8HhZA&feature=related :o :o

I've only heard Def Leppard playing the Rockman headphone amps, heard of ZZ top too, but not the correct album I think, many users though (from wiki)
Among the many well-known guitar players who adopted the Rockman early on are:
* Tom Scholz
* Alex Lifeson of Rush
* Charlotte Caffey of The Go-Gos
* Phil Collen and Steve Clark of Def Leppard
* Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top
* Megadeth on the album Peace sells
* Bernie LaBarge on his CBS album "Barging In" (1983)

i always thought it sounded too good for a strat... :)

Machine head, the more things change
You'd think 5150s by their gear, maybe dual recs by the sound. Nope. JCM800s

For anyone who doesn't know already, it might be worth mentioning that Tom Scholz didn't just use the Rockman, he invented it. :)

But he didn't use it until the 3rd album - 3rd stsge
The first two albums were recorded with Marshalls via a Scholtz power soak
He developed the Rockman after the second album
Tom Scholtz had a bit of a Brian May obsession too!

gibbons always has an amazingly sick and personal tone whatever gear he uses.. it always sounds so great and gnarly.
i'd like to say it must be all in the fingers, i'm not sure it is though since he has an famously amazing collection of vintage and boutique gear. nevertheless, there must be some sort of secret.. perhaps his picking style or something.
-
I tdidn't make ME sound just like Brian either - yes it's the real one

probably has a little to do with the peso he uses to pick for a good portion of his songs.
-
Yep, the peso and the way his plays is what does it. I'm a big Rev Willie G fan :)

I thought they used a THD Univalve? It was on eBay at one point if I remember rightly????

Ah, must be genuine then!
-
Ha ha! Indeed!
-
speaking of the darkness, they were known for always playing les pauls, but on the first album Justin played all the solos on a Dan Armstrong Plexi guitar with the country pickup.
-
Hendrix recorded alot of stuff with a Fender Bassman. Voodoo Chile for example. Little Wing and Wind Cries Mary too I believe.
