I shouldn't have been looking should I? I've been watching out for a PRS McCarty with a rosewood neck for a few months now, and guess what popped up
It's been used, there's a few marks here and there, so it must sound OK. And according to MartinW, PRS's need a bit of character ;)
McCarty Rosewood from 2005, with birds. £1599. Cracking price. All the others I've found have been £1900+ with moons.
Let the "I told you so"s begin!

I told you so....actually I encouraged you!
Where from BTW?
-
Ha!
I'm away for a few days, and what's the first thing I see when I get back?
:D
-
It's from Coda Music in Stevenage. I've been checking a lot of sites daily, and I think they added it late yesterday. It was sold by 9:15am ;)
-
it is a good price - you will have to let us know your thoughts on the rosewood neck tone in a band setting.
we all knew you would be first, no point fighting it!!
-
Ha ha! Too true!
I'll let you know how it goes. It's the final piece of my "tone quest" - do I like the sound (and feel) of a guitar with a rosewood neck? Once I've tried that, and decided either way, I think I'll be done.
Which is actually quite scary for me...

Most of the stuff you say, I believe. This, I do not!
Roo

Ha ha! Tis true though! I'll have tried everything I'm interested in then, so there's nothing left to!
I should never say never though I guess, but I'm fairly confident I'll settle after this...
-
Well 'technically' I did beat you by a week or so with my 335 purchase but I'll let that slide as you have a reputation to uphold! :P
Great looking guitar - would love one of those myself - nice guys at coda too
Matt
p.s. as for this being the end of your tonequest - no chance
-
I wouldn't bet on it, Matt :) My amp rig doesn't get any better, as the folks coming to the Manchester Meet will hear. It suits me perfectly as I helped spec up the amp with Martin ;) Plus I have the Celestion Golds too, superb speakers, in a top spec cab.
As for humbucker guitars (my main type) I have a variety of the models I like in all the different configurations (Mira, Mira Maple Top, McCarty, McCarty Korina, McCarty Rosewood). The "McRosie" was the final piece of the 'set', and I have no interest in the new Mira X or the McCarty Smokeburst. Also, the Modern Eagle is just way too expensive for what is essentially a slightly flasher version of the McRosie.
I've got a great Tele, a P-90 guitar and 6 and 12 string acoustics.
So there you go - it may be the end!
-
ahh but what about a semi 8)
-
It looks great, man :) I agree that a few bumps add character, too. A guitar's a waste if you're too afraid to play it because it's gorgeous and unmarred.
-
ahh but what about a semi 8)
Had a Casino for a while, didn't like the chunky body.
Had a couple of Strats, sold the USA Fender and just kept my JV Squier - my first electric. I like simple two pickup guitars, hence I prefer Teles.
Had loads of LP types, and I just can't get on with singlecuts. I play with my thumb wrapped right over the neck (like Hendrix did) and over the 12th fret I'm stuffed. I just can't play comfortably.
I've tried a fair old range of guitars and have never been really happy with any of them. The PRS McCarty changed that as it fits me perfectly. The Miras are not quite as comfortable to play for me, but I really like their different tonality, flexibility and incredible resonance (with the thinner body).

Indeed! I've been caught out with that before. I'm looking forward to checking it out when it arrives tomorrow...

I know what you mean - prs do make very comfortable guitars

Sweet 8)

Nice guitar.
Need pics of the back as the rosewood necks vary and that one looks like a cracker, a nice light colour!
Dont you have ibanez's? and as a ACDC fan SG's still? are prs that good you've sold everything? Nice.
-
Nice one! One day I'll try searching for a PRS... it's going to have to be one of those, rosewood necks feel so good. Happy new guitar!!!
-
that's very nice. :) i think if i ever did get a PRS, it'd be a mccarty (based on what i've tried).
struggling to resist the urge to type: "I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING"...
-
Let the "I told you so"s begin!
No, I'm totally shocked! Wasn't expecting this at all.....
-
I'm not bothered by rosewood colour, some people will only buy the really dark stuff. I'm not fussed, especially at this price! The fingerboard is separate, so I think the headstock is the best guess of what the neck itself looks like!
I've got four Ibanez guitars at the minute, although one will be up for sale shortly. I've got my Epi SG for gigging with 'DC but I sold the Gibson '61 I had. The only Gibson I own now is a Les Paul Special Doublecut with P90s......
-
What the hell do you do for money, armed bank robber? lol
You spend more continuously on equipment than most people do on houses.
Martin

Fanned Frets are calling you, Twinfan! :)

I'm an IT Project Manger. We have a reasonably priced house that we bought in 2000 before the prices skyrocketed, cheap cars, we don't really drink, don't smoke or do drugs and we don't have kids. My spare money goes on my gear, and in the last few years I've bought loads of stuff it's true. Sorry
In the last 6 months or so I've been selling stuff to buy stuff, like I think most 'normal' people do  Before that, I'd been just spending. At a silly rate  That couldn't continue.
I'll be selling a McCarty Korina and an Ibanez RG770DX to pay for this new one, so it'll actually only 'cost' me a couple of hundred quid....
And Roo - nope! They just sound too odd!!!
-
At least buying gear you are buying stuff that will hold the majority of its value or even appreciate - you could have gone out and bought a procession of ridiculous cars (like me)
sensible chap
-
I've lost money on cars before, learnt my lesson ;)

Have you considered that you can like the raw neck SO MUCH that you start thinking in buy more?
I don't believe you're done... It's an addiction, you'll have to fight everyday against, but there is no GAS Anonimous
To be fair I was undecided if would be you or PhillyQ who would buy first :D
-
It was always going to be Twinfan first, Fernando!! (But I've got a quiet bet on Philly and a certain Emerald - it might take a while yet, but I think it's written in the stars/cards/wotever...)
And sorry Dave, I have to join in here... I don't think you're done either... I know you believe you are, but...
-

Nah, no contest.
I'm still focused on building parts Strats and Teles. No plans at all to buy anything "ready-made" at the moment. Of course that could all change any moment!
Speaking of which....

I am totally fascinated by that guitar, but I really do have an enormous hurdle of "Catholic guilt" to overcome in terms of
(a) spending that much money; and
(b) justifying it on any other grounds whatsoever, considering my musical skills are roughly equivalent to a recorder-wielding 8-year-old playing "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" at a school carol concert.
-
Once I've tried that, and decided either way, I think I'll be done.
Let's face it, its not going to happen :P
-
And Roo - nope! They just sound too odd!!!
they dont sound odd at all, and strangely they dont play odd either - they just look a little odd ;)
this is why i need to bring my fanned fret proto to the meet-up!! :)
-
Indeed Wez!
And to all those doubters about me and guitars? We'll see ;)
-
Dave - "I don't have a problem I can stop at anytime"
later - "hello is that guitar buyers anonymous........."
only kidding
-
-
Hmm, this is nice for a 22... normally i don't think they're as good looking as the 24's, the 24's seem to show off its curves more drastically than the 22, 22's being more smooth looking.
But i guess that's the whole vintage vs modern thing!
I like this one though... and may have that McCarty off you if I don't get this one I'm eyeing up.
-

PM sent ;)
-
Well done Dave. You just have to find another now to go with it.
-
Or not! When I've sold the McCarty Korina, I won't have any more twins!
Just a set of triplets ;)

-
That RW McCarty is lovely TF, congratulations. It's got a very workmanlike vibe to it.
-
Thanks Simon - I certainly thought it was a punt, and the price was a great surprise! :)
-
Congrat enjoy! Looks another nice one.
Wish PRS would start doing some lefties again instead of adding more lots more right handed designs.
-
I don't think they'll do lefties again mate. I think it screwed up their production too much :(
-
Well it's arrived here at work :)
It looks very much like the pic, which is a good start. The flame is a tad more subtle in real life. Condition of the guitar is excellent, just a cracked neck pickup ring and a fairly 'used' case - which I'm guessing explains the price, although Coda are really good on the price of used gear. They must shaft people on trade-ins! :o
I'm assuming it's had a pickup swap at some point and someone screwed the ring back on too tight. I've got a set of cream rings that will fit knocking about though, so that's an easy fix. I'll swap them over when the pickups I have earmarked for it arrive ;)
The neck feels really nice - super smooth and 'organic' with the lack of finish. The guitar seems pretty resonant too, how much the neck has to do with that I don't know. All in all, it's a classy little number!
I'll give it a quick blast tonight at home, before I take it to DC rehearsal to try it at volume - cranked JTM45 with Celestion Gold 2x12. Hmmm, lovely........
-
:D Awesome!
the earmarked pickups will keep on secret till they arrive, right?
Prepare to be seduced by the Rosewood  Do you know if it's Brazilian or Indian?
-
I think he has previously mentioned the pickups
-
Twinfan has far too much disposable income.
jealousy ensues
-
I think he has previously mentioned the pickups
On this thread, re-read it bout 3 times and couldn't find... :)
-
I'm thinking they are not BKPs, he put himself on the waiting list for them about 2 weeks ago
-

I have mentioned the pickups previously, and they're non-BKP so I won't go on about them.
The neck is Indian Rosewood - I can't afford Brazilian!
-
I can't get YouTube here at work, so I don't know what gWem is linking too!
-
Monty Python clip. Classic :D
-
Spanish Inquisition?
-
Spanish Inquisition?
Nah, the only where the monks have wooden boards and are walking around the plague-ridden villages and hitting themselves on the head, then it goes to the witch and weighing her, etc.
-
Gotcha! Just watched it!
Got home and opened up the case to check the guitar out properly. It's lovely :) Tuned her up and noticed the action was really low, so out with the screwdriver and up with the bridge. Only I slipped and dinged the top. Aw man! I'd only had it in the house 20 mins :(
Luckily I found a couple of other prior dings so it wasn't the first. Phew!
Anyhoo, a quick tone report. Compared to a stock McCarty it seems a bit more open. Bit more bass, bit more treble, which gives the impression of slightly less mids. Great sustain and 'bloom' on the notes, which is a bit different. All subtle stuff though really.
Off to 'DC rehearsal to try it at volume......
-

Just curious, do you slacken the strings before adjusting the bridge? I always do, but I notice on a few of my guitars (including both PRSes) someone has obviously adjusted the bridges with the strings under tension, leaving bloody great gouges from the grub screws in the brass studs. Not a big deal, but it does annoy me.
-
^ yeah, that'd be annoying. that's the risk with going second-hand, i guess... but then you have no way of knowing if someone in a shop who isn't qualified/knowledgeable hasn't messed with a new guitar either... i think i generally slacken my strings before adjusting a fixed bridge, yeah... i don't think it matters as much with a floyd though (that's what the dan erlewine book says, anyway, so i'm not going to argue with it  )...
get your priorities straight, dave, first pics for the forum, then rehearsal!
seriously, though, sounds nice, i imagine the neck's being made of different wood would affect things quite a bit. i never get round to taking pics either so i can't talk...
-

I'd say it matters more on a FR. Muck up the knife edges and there goes your tuning stability.
-

Yeah, presumably the knife edges are hardened steel, but you don't want them either going blunt or cutting grooves in the posts.

Yeah, presumably the knife edges are hardened steel, but you don't want them either going blunt or cutting grooves in the posts.
Then you get some LFR's that are made of butter and you're in for some real fun. At the very least you should be diving the trem fully with the bar when adjusting action.
And now to get completely off topic. I'm thinking of getting some bike chain lube to reduce wear on my floating bridges. They're designed to lubricate metal while keeping dirt off. Miles better than chapstick that people like to use for some reason.
-
I'd say it matters more on a FR. Muck up the knife edges and there goes your tuning stability.
yeah, i'm aware of that
just seems a bit ridiculous to me that a book as well-regarded as the erlewine one would tell you something wrong... and i'm pretty sure i've read elsewhere, in other respected books, that it doesn't matter either...
though i guess the safe thing to do would be to release some of the tension.
-

I do slacken them off, yeah. I should probably slacken them more though as I sometimes chew things if I've not de-tuned enough.
Well the rosewood neck does make a fairly big difference actually! It's a bit less 'congested' at band volume than the mahogany neck version, noticable in chords, but it doesn't seem to quite have the punchy mids when soloing. Interesting. I'm going to take both maple top McCartys to Doppelganger rehearsal next week and do some back to backs......

Cool! Waiting for that report :D

btw twinfan, I just saw a PRS for sale in Manchester for what seems to be a good price. It looks so nice as well (except the misshapen bridge pickup ring).

Go on, you know you want to :P

Nice! I'm not a trem person, but cheers anyway!

Ho, that's very pretty. Gotta love that pure Mahogany satin look and the 20th Ann. birds.
