i want to get a decent war pedal to work at hi gain levels for metal solo's like triviums machine heads etc... but i would also like to be able to achieve a vintage hedrix wah sound .... what wah can do this? (metal tone more important but hendrix also a factor to consider) im looking at around £50-70 price range ...
thanks

It's a big tone pot.
Different wahs have different sweeps/qualities, but I've never heard of a 'metal' specific wah... unless ofc you buy into marketing hyperbole aimed at 14yr olds... in which case get a Morley Tremonti wah
You can still get italian 70's Jen crybabys with fasels for cheap on ebay, the more beaten and dirtier it is the more vintage it sounds ;-P

i realise this is a wide range, and i dont know anything about wah pedals really thats why im asking for help, i just wonderd what wah was good for hi gain work and im guessing i want a large sweep?

It all depends on what your ear likes, there are no rules. Some players like the high end on a Dunlop and some like the wider and rounder Vox and the rich players like the Clyde wah
Go try some out :-)

gcb-95 for about £50 and do the simple true bypass mod..

If I were you I'd save a bit more cash and get a Teese Wizard Wah, they were made specifically for humbuckers. I use mine in a covers band, I don't use it alot... but for tracks like Sandman, Sweetchild type stuff it's ideal. Check out Teese's website before you buy.

+ some of the circuit mods from the diy section of this website here

as standard i would do the vocal and sweep mods to make it a really usuable wah, i find the vox and crybaby wahs to be very quacky and those mods really help with that

...the not so modern crybaby?
i've got the jimi hendrix edition and it screams!

I have a Budda wah which is great in its own right and it has true bypass. I have also added an LED to show when its on and off via the 3PDT bypass switch I have added a switch under the treadle to change resistor values to go between the normal wah and more vocal wah. I used a 47K ohm resistor for the vocal type wah.
I also have a Dunlop GCB95 which I have tinker with. I have replaced the on/off switch for a 3PDT plus an indicator LED, plus I did the vocal switch mod. I also replaced the Inductor with a Fulltone. The key to a good sounding wah is the build and accuracy of the inductors. (500mH). Most are way off the mark. I also added a three way rotary switch to switch between different values of capacitors to change the sweep range.
There is lots on the web regarding wah modification.

If you want a wide sweep, the Dunlop Zakk Wylde wah is worth looking at. It's a little over the budget, but you can sometimes pick them up in a sale (as I did with mine for about £70) or on Ebay.

I've got the new Jimi Hendrix Dunlop, with the chrome top, and its very nice. Got it for around 80 or so from guitar guitar.
I've also heard the fulltone one is pretty good, maybe have a look at those in the second hand market. I think they're quite expensive.

SH Bad Horsie?

Dunlop Zakk Wylde Crybaby wah

The bad horsie is the best wah pedal I've ever used when it comes to playing with gain.
I'd definitely grab one.
