Title: What gear do you regret selling?
Post by: Zaned on January 30, 2009, 04:30:38 PM
So how about it?

Me:

I've always sold what I have grown not to like, or what I've replaced with something better. The good things however, I'm nowadays like a pack rat

But the one piece of equipment I really regret selling was a Mesa/Boogie Studio preamp. Great preamp, and they're worth more now than what I sold it for :?

And I actually sold it to get a Line 6 POD 1! I was a student back then so money was short. And the POD served me well, but it still hurts to think that I got rid of the preamp to get the POD..$%&#. I would kick my own ass if I could go back in time.

So let's hear it people!

Oh man.... well there's the 67 Vibrolux Reverb, Hughes and Kettner Triamp, VHT Pitbull and an old Hiwatt 4x12 with Fanes.

Nothing guitar wise, I don't really get attached to them in the same way as amps.

My Gibson V and my Epi LP custom.

Oh how I miss them :(

The only guitar that I regret selling is a Patrick Eggle Berlin that I had briefly.

I had to raise cash quickly, and it was either that or sell my LP - which wasn't going to happen.

one of a kind 1 Pickup Vigier Ultra with passive p/ups in black diamond with a maple board, i kind of didn't sell it, the strings had cut grooves behind the nut into the headstock (didn't see until i restrung it) and as i spent c£2,800.00 on the guitar i was shattered, returned it to the store the next day for a refund.

Saw a clip of a guy called Joe Grouse playing it at a vigier clinic, sank to my knees in an epic movie style and screamed NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO  PDT_032

I gave away my £12.50 3/4 sized acoustic to my mates kids.

I loved that axe, wish I'd have kept it (never changed the strings in it's 14 years - it was so wrong it was wicked).  Sounded great in it's own way.

Early '80s Hamer Vector - sold it on impulse and really wish I hadn't.  That's definitely my biggest regret.

1989 Fender Strat Plus Deluxe.  I mostly miss the colour, Gunmetal Blue - I would've modded the hell out of it by now if I still had it.

EB/MM Axis Sport - I don't particularly miss it, but it was a very nicely made guitar.  Probably should've kept it and changed the pickups.

1964 Gibson SG Special - never really got on with it, but I wish I'd sold it for more money!!!  :(

Sovtek Mig50... got it for a bargain at £200 shipped from the US, and then after a while went and part exchanged it for a JCM900. I love the 900 now, but the Mig will always be an amp i'd love to get back again, it had so much promise :)

50watt Marshall Plexi with 8x10 pinstripe cab
100watt Marshall Plexi with two 4x12 pinstripe cabs
100watt Orange Matamp OR100

Haven't sold any guitars (yet) apart from part exchanging 1966 Tele for my SG Standard.

One thing I don't regret selling was HH Musician Valve Sound Combo

My early 70's Bigsby-equipped Gibson SG.
I bought it cheap with a broken headstock, and had it repaired, but didn't persist with setting it up long enough, and lost patience with it. That was in '85.

My Gibson Sonex 180, which was my first decent guitar, and was surprisingly good. Sold that on Denmark Street in about '83

My '82 Fender Bullet, the Strat shaped, tele-necked, single coil tapped HB version, made from parts lying about the US factory when they almost went bust. That was a superb very inderrated guitar. If you see one, buy it.

Amp-wise, nothing! 8)

I regret selling an Ibanez RG1550FM. It was a limited model only a small few were made and it was amazing. Sold it to get another RG which turned out to be the most terrible guitar I've ever owned.

I've been lucky. I've sold a Yamaha Pacifica 112, Ibanez RG470, ESP M302 and a Fender Lite Ash Tele, and I don't regret selling any of them (although I lost a lot of money on the ESP). In some ways it'd be nice to still have the Yam - my first guitar - but that's just a little bit of sentimentality I guess.

I do really regret sending back a Mesa Boogie Roadster head I bought though - should have kept it and bought a smaller cab and an attenuator!

Only gear I regret selling was my Orange Thunderverb 200 but I had to sell it to get some cash in my bank account to procure my Visa to come to England. Took me about 2 months to pay it off and then I only had it for about 2 or 3 months and then sold it again and lost a fair bit of money. Was a great amp, would love to replace it with a 50W version when I get back to Australia.

Apart from that I don't really regret selling anything , haven't sold anything else for financial reasons, only sell stuff I don't use or like so it's all good with me.

I've bought and sold over 20 guitars, and i regret half of them i'd say.

Some of them were pure lemons... some were fantastic looking back, just my playing got in the way!

The biggest 'doh' of mine was selling an ENGL Screamer, but i got it cheap so no worries.

If i ever get into the situation where i'm forced to either sell it's way to me right now or eat, i'll probably starve...

No regrets here sold a low end Ibanez peavey Crate Vox valvestate (dont know why the hell I bought it)

About to sell my Brawley Custom and am thinking if it would be wrong to sell my Boss MT2 seems like a crime to send another one out into the world. Could use the cash though.

yeah, i struggle with space too (well, i personally don't, but my parents and sister do    ). i didn't sell my marshall because i needed the money (it does come in handy, though)... but i figured £150 or so was of more use to me than a cr@ppy black box i never used which was taking up a ton of space...

i only regret(ed) selling one thing, and that was my peavey classic 2x12 VTX series. not real expensive or anything, but i sold it because i couldn't get any gain out of it, and then the day before i had to ship it out i discovered what a pregain knob was!

i don't regret it now though, because i have better gear... but maybe if i had known how to use the amp before i sold it i might have kept it.

Charvel Mod 3A (it was my first decent guitar, if I count the Tokai with original electronics as un-decent).

Peavey 5150 head (I got the first one that came to Germany back then).

Rivera Knucklehead and Marshall 4x12 to fund my first PowerMac in '96 - I was desperate and gave it away far too cheap.

...almost forgot: I REALLY regret selling my Soldano Atomic 16 Combo. That was a sweet amp!

fender american standard stratocaster... cream with maple fingerboard, s-s-s.
i sold it for the same price i paid to buy it (used but i suspect it was stolen - too cheap, the equivalent of 350 euros back in 1992), so i thought it was a good deal... but i never saw any money because i exchanged it for a used solid state head that i almost never used!

anyway, forgetting money, i wish i had it now, with a set of BKP vintage single coils...

Gretsch pro jet gold sparkle.(got it set up right not found one as nice since, sold to get another guitar..but get visiting rights sold to mate)

Oh jesus, where to start?

OK - in 1990-91 I went through some personal issues (long story) & totally gave up guitar, so I sold all my stuff for almost nothing (some of it to friends, some in local newpaper classified ads, some to music shops).

Fernandes FR120
Fernandes JS90
Charvel 750XL
Laney AOR II head & 2x12" cab
Laney Linebacker 65 combo

I would give almost anything to have the FR120 back.  It was a lovely guitar & there were very few of them in the UK (£729 was a lot of money for a new guitar in 1988).  The JS90 was pretty damn nice too.  I've twice had the chance to buy another 750XL, but inexplicably backed off both times  :?  Although Laney AOR heads turn up on ebay & in shops reasonably often, my Engl Savage covers my needs, though it would be nice to revisit the guitar sound of my youth... :)

Since I took up guitar again in 1992, I've probably made two really stupid sales/exchanges:

First, I PX'd one of my Charvel 550XLs for a Gibson Explorer.  Don't get me wrong, the Explorer was a nice guitar, but since the advent of BKPs & Feline's excellent repair work, the 550XL I still have (I owned 3 of them at one point) is one of my favourite guitars - I so wish I had the other two still.

Then, to compound the error, I PX'd the Explorer & another 550XL for a Gibson Gothic V & an amp, neither of which I ever really got on with.  In fact, even without the loss of 2 nice guitars to acquire them, the Gothic V & Peavey Duel 212 would have to rank among my more "dud" purchases.

I'm such a muppet sometimes...

I kinda miss my DeArmond M77-T. They're not made anymore and rare, especcially in the nice transparant orange mine was in. With some upgrades it could have been a superb guitar.

I take some comfort in the fact it could never be better than my Gretsch.

The one I really regret selling was my Epiphone '58 Korina explorer. Such a nice guitar.

Think it may be worth a lot more money than I let it go for - but at the time I was gagging for the TC Electronics G Force

Not much really.
Miss my first acoustic (a Kay) not cos it was any good, just cos I learnt so much on it and it was the first playable (sort of) guitar I owned. Only other thing was an Electro-Harmonix octaver thing that was pretty unusable to be honest. Only miss it cos being old I'm sure somebody on Ebay would pay over the odds for one now. Got twice what I paid for it when I sold it tho, and the guy did try it first and still bought it!!
Oh and I sold my spare AOR 100 head. That I do miss.

Dunno about others, but my sold list was spaced out over about 10 years, which ain't too bad (I don't think)

To answer the other point, I save for everything I buy, which usually makes it seem all the more worthwhile when I eventually get my grubby mitts on it.

A 70's Ovation Deacon. It was a rather bizarre looking guitar, but pretty cool in retrospect. My good buddy and I had drooled over it at a small local music store for months when we were teenagers. They had a 50% off going out of business sale, I had a job and he didn't, so I ended up with it. He was so bummed I gave it to him the next Christmas.  Here's a pic ( not mine, but just like it):

Only guitar I regret selling was a dead mint custom color (candy apple red with matching headstock) 1969 Fender Jazzmaster.

I was a student when I sold it. I blew up my amp and needed an amp more than another guitar.

Now that I have a bit more money I have searches out for it on Ebay and Gbase, just to see if I can ever get it back.

Ya, it's kind of a love/hate thing...either you love it or you find it utterly repulsive looking. I agree, the Ovation headstock definitely looks cool on an electric. It had a weird active electronics thing going on which I thought compromised the sound, rather than making it sound better. Wish I still had it, though.

Where do I begin...

When I was still working in retail music (in the mid-70's), we used to get some really nice guitars as trade ins.  I never had enough to have more than 2 guitars and one amp back then, so I used to trade for ones I wanted.  In that period I sold or traded the following (these are just the ones I would still love to have):

1973 Les Paul 55 Reissue (I bought this new - but I traded it for the custom below)
1972 Les Paul Custom - one of the lightest weight customs I have played
1975 Chris Eccleshall Custom solidbody - one of the first he made, with DiMarzio SDS & PAF
1961 White SG/Les Paul Junior - enough said
1962 Fender Precision
Custom built double cutaway Les Paul with mahogany body, birdseye maple neck and humbuckers
Small Box Marshall Plexi 50 (two of these passed through my hands)
Original Vox AC30 (I had 3 different ones through the years, one original, one original with added top boost, and one grey top boost model)
Cream/Wheat Fender Tremolux with matching Bassman 2x12 cab
Ampeg B15N - I had this with the Precision - it was an incredible sound

More recently the only ones I have sold and regretted later were another white 1963 SG Junior and a 1972 Les Paul custom 55 Reissue.

I'm continually buying and selling stuff. The only thing I wish I'd never sold was a Zvex Box of Rock pedal - best pedal I've ever had. I've considered buying another, but I get my dirt from the amp these days, so it wouldn't really fit in with my rig.

Roland cube 30

Not a big deal I suppose, but I sold it when I didnt have need of it - lived in a place where all my stuff was in the lounge cos there wasnt space anywhere else. Moved to a bigger place, setup a room as a studio and suddenly found myself in need of a practice amp for slothing on the couch with. A cube 15 I gave away once was given back to me, so the duty is filled, but with 1/10th of the quality of amp (the 30 is great, the 15s a bit of a dog)

TSL602. fitted with JJs and G12Ts. Sounded great. Sold because of getting a powerball, but now doing some recordings for people it would be a really good amp to have around for rock tones that the PB doesnt really do.

Ive got a Few ,

1.A Schecter 007 blackjack was an awesome seven string but i sold it to get some cash together for uni and it was one of the guitars i used the least.  :x
2. was an ibanez RG550EX one of the desert sand/silver with the body coloured headstock, great guitar apart from at the time i didnt get on with trem's was well as i do now.

3. was an ESP LTD H1000 which was emerald green (never saw one before and havent seen one since) and awesome to play but I sold it to raise cash for my US PRS Tremonti so it sacrificed rather than a complete loss but it still hurts when i think of it.

4. Was a maverick mk 2 Species 7 string it was absolutely awesome I needed money at uni so it was last in first out. Not seen one since.....

5 an edwards Les Paul custom, I sold it because it was very heavy and I had a bad back at the time because of a car crash, I let it go for a stupid price at that

6. last but not least was a maverick f1 custom/prototype with a reverse headstock which i swapped for a jackson 7 string which I hated in the end....

You live and learn....

Nothing that will kill me...

A Marshall Shredmaster pedal went missing in a studio move - does that count?

Schecter 006 Blackjack I sold to a friend. Didn't use it much so it needed a good home.

Carvin DC135, all Koa sold to another friend. Loved that thing but, again, I wasn't playing it enough.

PRS Cu22 Artist Pack with RP pickups. Tone monster but I didn't get on with the poly finished WF neck and picking position. In some ways I regret not being able to use it to it's full potential, although that's the reason I sold it.

Not my smartest move, then got well behind on the payments for my Gibson non-reverse p.90 Firebird and was forced to waive bye bye to that................Bugger !!. Dad bought me a Gibson Marauder so i could continue gigging in exchange for much work, i still own this guitar.

The Fender Twin 2x12 combo i have was made in the USA in 92, the date was taken from the Fender web site after finding a serial number / date  resource. A Blackface `Twin` (note= Not Twin Reverb) Black knobs  ( some models had Red knobs). To see this amp go to       steve@ampguy.co.uk        and in the pre-owned section there is a picture of this very amp !. This is a professional amp and says as much on the facia.  100watt 4x 6L6 with a 1/4 power switchable to 25 watts. Clean and Crunch have a shared eq  and the Lead channel has a seperate eq.
                                                                                                                                                         There is a channel
assignable effect loop with front mounted Mix , also next to it is a Prescence and Reverb knob. Round the back is an array of Switches and sockets. Standby, Off/On, Quarter & Full power switches. Effects level switches with channel assign. Reverb with same. Extension speaker options with switchable 0hm select + series/parralell speaker wiring matches. Fuse and Hard wired mains lead. Phew!! oh yea, and foot switch socket. The 3 button footswitch controls; Channel= Clean . Crunch/ Lead / Reverb.
The speakers are original and possibly Eminence ?. The cabinet has `Tilt Back `legs and removable castors and a single handle on top. Heres the `Rub`, this has got to be among the heaviest objects known to man.
I bought it at a Music trade fair and was knocked out by its clean sound as were three other guys who were up to buying it.  The deal was struck and i elected to pick it up later , little did i know what was in store for me.
I love this amp, but i just cant lug it about.  A Strat or 335 type guitar and your set for any gig. Go to Harmony Central and under User Review - Guitar Amps - Fender - `The Twin` right down the bottom , as the newer version is toward the top ,you will find pages of reviews.
I`m a big strong 54 year old, but if i had felt the weight before buying i doubt i would have it now.
I have a nice selection of valve amps for every eventuality, i  never gigged  this amp but its a very popular model. Sell it or keep it Hmmmm? , its not a money thing, so why? ( Answeres on a post card please.)

WILL I REGRET SELLING IT ?

Hi, hi, hi.

Regrets, I have a few:

Solid rosewood "George Harrison" Tele from, err, '71, I think, but it's been a while.
'73 SG
'78 Strat - One of the rare 70s Strats that were really good.
Martin HD28VR - The best acoustic guitar I've ever seen or heard, bar none, and I have heard some pretty damn fancy ones.
Custom ES-175 replica, made by a local luthier.  All solid wood.  Was sweet.
Ibanez S540.  Yeah, it wasn't one of the greats, but I really liked it.  I had a good one.  Plus, it was purple and purple guitars are hard to come by these days.  ;)
