Hmmm....
Do I risk trying to get to work? Or stay home with the nice warm wife..?
-
I'm staying home. I don't want to risk driving a 32 tonne lorry in these conditions and neither do my employers.
Right where's the Scotch!! :D
-
Had a web site release this morning (big online system) so had to get up at 5am to get to Hammersmith for 6:30 ... which I managed (well, by 7am in the end) only to discover the release is cancelled :-(
Now I'm wondering if I'm going to get home again ...
If you're anywhere in London I would stay in bed, half the tube is off line and most of the overland trains. And I saw only 2 cars on the Fulham Palace road which is usually a permanent traffic jam ...
Still, everything looks pretty!!
-
^ and the buses are not running in London..The M25 is shut in some parts
-
The buses arent running over my way too (leeds/huddersfield)
I got up early
got to bus stop for th e 5.30 no show
7:00 - no show
7-30 no show
so i went home called my manager
said id try for the 8:00 one
no show
so called him again he said dont worry get home so i dont catch my death and hes gonna give me an extra days annual leave and mark it as if id booked it off even though i still have 7 days left.
So all in all other than freezing to death for 2 hours... RESULT !
-
I'm bang on the south coast, and we hardly ever get any snow, even though 5-10 miles inland they might have several inches.
However, today we have about 3 inches and it's still falling. My daughter's school is closed, so I'll just be looking after her today.
Snowman anyone ?
-
Hmmm....

Err - don't you mean stay at home with the nice guitars?
-
As usual London's transport system has ground to a near halt.
I might be able to get a train, or I could walk the 3 miles to Brixton and get the Victoria Line, but since the snow's not stopping I'm more worried about getting home again tonight once it freezes up again.
Day's holiday I think. I can put my new Callaham bridge on my Strat. :)
-
I'm just waiting for some of our Finnish and Danish friends to turn up and take the piss out of what wimps we are...
-
I've been up all night enjoying the snow. Filling bins packed with snow, making snow angels, making snowmen, snowball target practice, etc.
I love it. My whole campus looks like a bubble bath factory exploded.
Gonna get some sleep till 11.30 now.
-
buggers!!!
I put it off as long as possible but am now in work and sitting at my desk :(
nothing more depressing than a school thats open on a snow day

Our college is closed etc, going to alexandra palace for a big snowday with mates, gunna be ace :)
Was meant to be going to Chester today for a job interview.. Don't see that happening now.
-
I'm stuck in Bushey (near Watford) at my girlfriends place, I haven't seen snow this deep in years. Doesn't look like I'm going home till wednesday morning
All the roads I go on to get home have been closed or major delays, So I wouldn't even think of getting in my car.
-

I'm work with a Swede, who is very confused by all the chaos caused by a "little bit of snow". We are apaprently all wimps, especially the ones complaining about having to walk in the snow :P
-
the school is quite busy actually, i cant believe the number of students dressed so inappropriatly
everyone is talking about being sent home but a lot come on buses so its unlikely. we do have a 2 hour meeting after school that we are all hoping is cancelled
-
99 - We are all wusses over here. Back in Sweden my dad had to ski to work (if it was too deep to take the moped).
I woke up this morning and thought "Think I'll work from home today" <----- read "Think I'll stay in bed until the phone rings".
After the boss phoned and I had to turn on the laptop, I realised that I was supposed to be in Nottingham five minutes ago. :( Think I'll stay here with some decent tea instead.
-
I had to leave my car at work last night and get the train and walk home, and it hasn't stopped snowing since then... don't think i'm going anywhere for a couple of days. Does make everything look very nice though :)
-
Haha, yes. When I was at school if it snowed it meant having to walk for an hour across fields to get there rather than gettting the busses. The g**ts used to keep school open anyway just in case anyone turned up ...
Would be quite fun to ski across London today, definitely possible if you have a pair of Nordics (snowboards, pah!) - you'd probably be the fastest thing on the streets too :P
-
Loads of snow here today as well, as far as I'm aware uni is still open though :( I may not be going in this morning anyway, cut my face whilst shaving and it refuses to stop bleeding  I dont fancy walking around with a tissue hanging off my face :P
-
I wasn't in til 11 at college but SNOW DAY all the same!
-
buggers!!!

Is there many people there?
More importantly, is our children learning?
I had already taken today and tomorrow off on holiday because we're off skiing with mates for a week (yay!), so I thought, what the hell, might as well make a 2 week break of it and have some gaming/playing/DIY time too. :)
I would NOT want to get from Oxford to London or Sutton today for sure!! It's bad enough on a 'normal' Monday morning!!

Styptic pencils for the win!
-
Lots of pressure with a bit of tissue did the trick, no need for your fancy styptic pencils here :P
-
To snow:
"How I wish, how I wish you were here"
-
To snow:
"How I wish, how I wish you were here"
For the record, us Brits tend to feel the same way about sunshine as you do about snow ;)
Roo
PS we get snow so rarely as well, that it's usually a real treat!
-
try to work at 40°C, you'll see the hell it is...
I'm not good at being cooked alive, so I like cold
(think I will got the same answer about 0°C, but I felt very ok when I was there... about 5°C london and less than it on Amsterdam)
-
It's true that it's easier to work in the cold - there are always more layers, right? I remember one heat wave when the temp in our office got to 41. Naturally, we then weren't in it, the pub over the road had air con :D God Bless Academia! Those days are gone now, though ;)
Roo
-
Yes, 40°C is good at the beach, layed down like a lizard heating, drinking damn-cold beers
-
When I was on holiday in Egypt it was 42 degrees with a slight breeze at 9pm, it was perfect.
Now I'm in England hoping and praying for summer to come early.
-
I live in the middle of London and work in Soho but I took an hour and half walking detour this morning to see it all. It was quite interesting to see how commuters split into two groups: those who were grumpy that they could get to work but felt inconvenienced by the weather and those who were grinning from ear to ear and looking for the first opportunity to start a snowball fight and/or build a snow man. As for me, I'm definitely in the latter camp. I've also never seen so many people taking photos on their way to work before. Flickr's going to be on fire tonight I tell ya.
-
Well, I left the nice warm wife (and guitars) at home, and made it into Canary Wharf. Journey time is usually 1 1/2 hours, took me 2 1/2 hours... could have been much worse.
Jubilee line shut down through Stratford.
Most of my team is missing.
Remote solutions not working, as there are so many people off that the Citrix boxes are overloaded...
Not sure how I'm getting home tonight - although the company is laying on hotels for essential staff...
I DO love the snow though!
Mark.
-
I'm off for a walk to the shop and check to see if the local is open. Nice for the beer to be cold for a change
-
I work from home so no effect on my working day. Phone is rather quiet though.
Must resit the urge to go sledging...
-
When I was on holiday in Egypt it was 42 degrees with a slight breeze at 9pm, it was perfect.
Yikes! I'd be OK if it was half that temperature. At noon. And that was the hottest day of the year.
I much prefer the winter, at least temperature-wise. And I do like the snow, but not in London - it's just impossible to travel anywhere. This is the city where trains grind to a standstill if there are a few leaves on the track, after all  . And if you try walking you get sprayed with filthy black slush.
I expect central London will be totally clear tomorrow, it's always a couple of degrees warmer than the suburbs. But I'll be slip-sliding-away in my road for most of the week.
-
Wimps :x
Nah, just kidding 8) I guess the Uk just isnt prepared for when the snow arrives, but i really think if you are able to walk to work theres no reason to stay home, but i understand about the busses etc not having the correct tyres;) By the way, im from Sweden

I think you need to understand the English work mentality. There's every reason to stay at home
-
If I had work I would go to work, cause there probably wouldn't be many people. It'd just be quiet and you'd just be there watching it snow.
Where at home - you'd be watching it snow.
-
I went to work using the M23 and M25 and got there ok but I was one of the few who did. Many people who live nearer didn't make it. They sent me home about 2 though very concerned for my welfare. Driving was ok on the motorways but hellish on the country lanes. Mrs 38th had a couple of Canadians in her shop today saying about how hopeless we are and we cannot cope. The reality is that if we knew we'd get this weather for weeks or maybe months then we could afford the resources to deal with it. Having said all that, one guy at work lives 2 miles away from the office and didn't show!
-
I don't think it's that we can't cope with it, but it's just the fact we rarely get enough snow for there to be a snow day. So when there is we make a big deal out of it so everyone gets a day off.
-
Too cold to do woodwork. Took the quad bike out and towed a mate around on his sled at 40 :D
Then went to get a drink, and when parking up... I slid 15 yards straight into my Father's car, bent in the rear bumper and knocked in my front right light. Very lucky considering there is actually no bodywork damage
-
Me and my Dad both made it into work (we both work at Scottish Borders Council) but were sent home at 15:45 after being told they were closing the offices. Cheeky buggers said we have to work up the extra hour and a quarter on flexi time though!

Those are from a snow storm last year in Wisconsin.

same here, though i don't like it too cold either. somewhere between about 15 and 21 (celsius) is just about right.
it's not too bad here, it tried to snow earlier, a little lay, but not very much. wee bit lying on the lawns, trees, etc., but not much on the footpaths and roads. more like a really heavy frost.
-

Not where I work, for sure... less people to do the same amount of work, you'd be working your ass off!
-
Ok, so I slipped over and battered my elbow.
Snow can die.
-
...cor what's this country coming to, it's only a bit of $%ing snow
8)
-
well, we are the only school in the are open. Lots of very unhappy students and even more unhappy staff :( in fairness there isnt any reason to be off today but i think everyone convinced themselves we would be
-
Wifey has a 70 mile round trip for work and isn't feeling too great anyway. Told her this morning she had to stay here (she's still in bed at the minute). I'm
working shirking from home again today. Any excuse :D
-
Right, my college gig has been called off because of the snow, it's not even bad here in the midlands.
Snow can die.
-
no snow here today... :) must have melted overnight or earlier this morning...
-
Plenty of snow around here (South Wales) today. Had to walk 7 miles into work - roads down the several hills from where I live were impassable by car, and no buses were running on the main roads. Wouldn't have been a problem if the soles on my 10-year-old hiking boots hadn't disintergrated and torn off halfway there. :(
-
no snow here today... :) must have melted overnight or earlier this morning...
It's coming.
-
Got me car back today, started first time too :) Had to shovel the drive though, haven't done that much hard labour in ages!
-
I hope it snows overnight so i get another snow day, cba with college tomorrow.
-
Still loads of snow on the ground here and apparently more on the way today (I'm in Leicestershire).
-
Most of the snow seems to have gone in Leicester (in the main bits of the city anyway) but the stuff that turned to slush on Monday has all iced over so the un-gritted paths are bloody slippy, takes twice as long to get anywhere because you have to go so slowly :x
Back home in Loddington, Northants, all the snow seems to have stayed except on the roads which were gritted. Looks nice out my window looking over the fields :)
-
I'm only 4 or 5 miles out of the centre.
You been to Stoney Cove for a pint yet soft boy?
-
Nope, never even heard of it :P
-
I must tell you about it every month
Get someone with a car to give you a lift to Stoney Stanton. Good place for a pint.
Been to The Musician yet? Have some good music (suprisingly) in there.
-
Snow predicted overnight and in the day tomorrow so possible snow day for tomorrow :D
-
Yeah I go to the Musician every so often on a Monday, the bloke who hosts the open mic night there is hilarious (unintentionally) I'm trying to learn some acoustic instrumentals so I can get up and play something.
-
no snow here today... :) must have melted overnight or earlier this morning...
It's coming.
not yet, apparently.
-
Wtf is a snow day? My school never shut because of snow. :|
-
all the kids i work with have never even seen snow like we had on monday... they had to be in school knowing full well every other local school was off playing in the stuff. I felt quite sorry for them.
I also felt sorry for myself as i would have liked an extra day off but i am aware that is just me being lazy. i do remember my school closing for snow but it was on top of a hill and none of the teachers could get to it.. i also remember spending a lot of less severe snow days in school because we used to steal the dinner trays for use as sledges- i think we got more days of for bomb scares, it was the early 90's!!
So our head decided to leave the decision yesterday till the last minute. It payed off because to everyones surprise it ended up being not as bad as expected and he gets to say we are the reliable school that wont close when other 'weaker, less relaible' ones will. sure would have helped moral to give an inch though
-

yeah, definitely. we get kickass snow like that so rarely, that the kids should be allowed out to have fun in it. i understand that people don't want the schools to close so they don't have to run looking childminders etc., but maybe let them out for a while when they're at school, then? though that's probably a nightmare for supervision etc.

The rest of the world all had a good laugh at Britain, 5 million off work, schools shut and 3 billion in lost business.
-
actually, that's probably less than we'd have lost with gordon and alistair in charge on a normal day. maybe it was their ploy all along.
-

I don't see your point, how much do you think it would cost to grit every road in England, and for every car to have 2 sets of wheels?
-
i actually have a snow day!!!
.. although i would like to point out i did get of my arse and walk into work this morning as they didnt decide till the last minute
-
The rest of the world all had a good laugh at Britain, 5 million off work, schools shut and 3 billion in lost business.
They can keep laughing, 3 million of us are off work with the family pissing about in the snow. It's us who are luaghing. I don't want to go to work.
Sadly I can work from home, but luckily my emails are shagged so I can't actually do anything.
Might walk to the shop in a bit.
-
yeah, its great... i have got so much done already today i hope we are still closed tomorrow!!
-
It funny how the media keep refering to the snow as 'chaos'. It's a bit of bloody snow, not burning hot sulphur.
I can still drive my car around and get about, I'm not confined to my bedroom with a hot water bottle, canned food and thermal clothes.
-
well ocado just cancelled my weekly shop!! its lucky i am not a pensioner ;)
-
Snow you say?!?!

This was fun :D
-
What a huge Drum kit :o
-
ARGH! We had a band coming from all over the country on Saturday to record for a Uni project, but I've just got an email from the university saying that they're closing it down from 2pm this afternoon until bloody Tuesday!
The band had bought train tickets and all sorts.
-
Built a 6 and a half foot snow-c--k today. Then knocked it over when my mate was on top :D
-
Good ol' snow, my road hasn't been gritted and is basically an ice-rink. Not looking forward to driving down to work in a few mins..
Built a 6 and a half foot snow-c--k today. Then knocked it over when my mate was on top :D
Built this one last year, it was just under 8ft:

My cousin Will leaning on it, and my mate riding it (he knocked the tip off to get up!)
-
 LMAO
-
well ocado just cancelled my weekly shop!! its lucky i am not a pensioner ;)
You can't be a pensoner if you can afford to shop at Waitrose - The Posh People's Supermarket (TM).
-
had a little snow last night late, but it had melted by the morning. you guys are definitely getting the worst of it so far...
-
I'm bored of snow now  We had a load of house/flat viewings today and had to walk for ages through snow, ice and muddy slush :( Shoes are soaking now. Ah well, the good news is we've put a deposit down on an awesome flat, I cant wait to move in next year, will be so glad to be out of uni halls :)
-

actually we spend less ordering from ocado/waitrose than we ever did wandering around morrisons, i tend to do a lot of impulse shopping if i go into a supermarket
-
It's snowing again :D
We've had snow continually on the ground (at least an inch or so) since the first day now.
-
Don't know how you're missing it, Dave.
Finaghy is a veritable winter wonderland, as if some higher power has tippexed out all the filth.
-
yeah, we're still ok here. one advantage of living out in the sticks, i guess. though normally belfast gets less snow than where i am, just lucky this time i guess. :)
-

Probably a lot less than the 5 million people cost the economy by pulling the net curtains back an inch and throwing the towel in without making no effort what so ever to get to work. I cant stand spineless wimps. The supermarket workers manage it, so do hospital staff. If you have the figures that can prove me wrong then bring it. :|
-
Don't know how you're missing it, Dave.
Finaghy is a veritable winter wonderland, as if some higher power has tippexed out all the filth.
Is it that bad there HTB?
-
we also made a snow c--k.... only it wasnt that big ;)
-
Just started snowing here in Leicester, made the walk back from the pub more exciting :P
