Title: New guitar on its way! SG style
Post by: Madiac on February 10, 2009, 07:41:34 PM
Im now waiting for my Feline Gothic Warpig SG to arrive here, already loaded with Bareknuckle War Pigs, so this really is my first guitar that is more leaned to "metal"  8) Some things that made me want this guitar more (exept for being an SG and being loaded with warpigs!) was that it has a thicker body, which i have sought in an SG, and a slightly longer scale (25") which i feel will give me atleast a slightly tighter feel. Ill be sure to post pics when i get it, and when i get a recording setup ill post clips aswell. I know a little bunch of people on the forum already played this guitar in the workshop and i only heard good comments, so im excited! Sadly, i sold my Orange Tiny Terror to afford it (which is kinda sad since im stuck with a roland microcube for now), but am gonna get ahold of a Blackheart Killer ant that has less than 1w, or perhaps some other amp until i can afford a Martamp! :) GAS really sucks sometimes... but atleast ill have a quality guitar (hopefully) unlike my Gibson SG GT which really doesnt feel to solid, so now i can build up on that and get a good amp aswell, besides the TT was to powerful for apartment use.

Very nice! I am very jealous ... I always thought Feline's cat eyes really suit the SG fret board, kind of floating above the horns ...
Wouldn't swap my pigged SG for anything, SG + Warpigs ==

Rock on.

Mighty cool!  Do the pickups have totally closed covers, Iommi style?

No, but that would have been cool now that you mention it, but those warpigs really add to the look on an all black guitar like this!

That's really hot! i'd really fancy one myself... i've never been a complete fan of the feline eyes, except here. They work well here!

a PRS scale SG, gonna be interesting!

I'd love a warpig if they nail the first album Sabbath tones...

*looks more closely* is it missing a fret? i'd have been tempted to jam in a extra fret right at the end there, looks like theres room for it!

Thanks for the nice comments.

We were trying to address a few of the usual shortcomings of the Sg with this one
The Eggle Iommi model had a few similar ideas too.
The thicker body allowed  for a stronger body to neck join
It also allowed for a better balance - as too many SGs tend to nosedive
Another strength thing was putting the jack on the side of the body too - as I get to see too many ripped out jacks on SGs

The 25" scale allows for a bit tighter tension on the strings (useful if downtuning) and gives better definition too
The pickups are in the same spot that they always are on an SG
Most Sgs just have a gap between the neck pickup and the end of the board - I simply extended the board for greater rigidity and had had plans to inlay a pearl motif there if I had wished , but have always been happy with it unadorned.

It has an Earvana nut too for improved intonation.

The frets are Dunlop 6155 which is the same size as they put on PRS guitars - has a nice feel - neither too vintage or too modern, but very comfy.

They pickups have the double row of allen head screws - they just dont stand out too much on the Camo covers.
We've left them flush with the cover but they could be raised selectively to tune the response of the pickups a bit
It's a good beefy sounding guitar - glad to see it going to a good home.

Nice one :D

I haven't played it (or even seen it in the flesh, I think) but it is one of the felines I've looked at the pics of and thought "mmmm..."

Yes, i hope ill get it early next week, and in one piece preferrably! I havent figured out how to track the package yet though (if even possible), even with the consignment number in hand so i dont really know when ill get it.
As i said, ill take pics when i get it here!  :D
Wish i did have a recording setup, then id give sound-clips aswell, but sadly, im barely gonna have enough for a decent amp!

So finally after much trouble shipping it here, i got it, havent played the thing though (exept running my finger across the strings to be surprised by the great resonant sound), but dared to open the case after it had warmed up a few hours to touch it and snap some pics haha, and Jonathan, thanks for the extra strings! 8) It seems to have got here undamaged, but cant say for sure untill ive given it a more thorough look, its a damn beauty though! Id take it over my Gibson SG any day!
Some pics as promised, will try to get better ones later:)

And damn, it plays and sounds amazingly, the more i play it the better it feels! The Warpig pickups really ROCK through this amp, perfect match i think, clear note definition even with both preamp and power amp drive set to full, so this was a perfect match. Whats funny also is, its noticeable lighter than my SG GT even though the body on this one is quite a bit thicker.
Love the neck and satin finish, and everythings just great, im planning to buy some recording equipment. Anyone can recommend a setup to mic up the amp? I already decided for the Shure SM57, but what else do i need?

Hurrah - so glad it got there safe and sound

Am hoping to change my courier to UPS - I have come to loathe aspects of dealing with the company I have been using - UPS will handle everything from collection to delivery without handing goods over to a sub-contractor or 3rd party.

It's a great little guitar - hope it rocks your world

Yes, and a damn sturdy feeling one to, Jonathan, i just have one question about the tailpiece height, i noticed that it was screwed down pretty low and thus some of the strings touch the back of the tune-o-matic. I personally dont notice anything wrong with this, but i heard this can destroy the saddles over time/break strings earlier, is this true, or just myth (dont really care about changing strings, but wouldnt want the bridge to collapse)? Just taking care of the guitar, better ask than be sorry later  Perhaps i could either raise the tailpiece a tad to set the strings free from the back, or string the string over the tailpiece, what do you think Jon? If you dont think it will cause a problem id rather leave it as it is, because seems perfectly fine to me^^

Might be able to do some clips with the digital camera, but not sure ill bother since the sound quality usually gets cr@ppy anyhow.

It should be fine as it is , although will be fine to raise it a touch
The tailpiece is pretty sturdy - its one of the old Wilkinson USA ones from about 12 years ago

So, this guitar is getting setup for C-tuning with some thicker strings and a tailpiece overwrap, just to try it out, and i think it will end up even more brutal, also, as im leaving it in for the setup anyway ill go along and change the pots to 1 meg ones, heard so much good about these and warpigs, and after that ill take some better pictures, its the most awesome guitar ive seen, looks simple, but so elegant, and it feels great to hold in my hands, absolutely love it. I remember when i saw it at the site and thought, that SG looks nice, and then it just grew on me more and more and then i just had to get it, so i asked Jonathan to put it on hold while i sold of some stuff in desperation to afford it

I think you'll like the 1meg pots.  I know my pigged SLSMG with 1meg pots sound great!  The previous owner of the guitar had a JB/Jazz set with the 1meg pots and just did not sound right in a maple neck through with an ebony fretboard.  A5 Warpigs solved that and more!  I wouldn't change them for anything.
