I have a very dark sounding les paul which i love, very clear, fat and warm... Looking for a pickup that has smooth highs and mids with tight bass as the bass can get a little flubby if to much bass is added due to it being a dark Mohangy sound...Both for Lead and rythm tune to Db Ab Db Gb Bb Eb
Kind of leaning towards the contemporary section but open for suggestions!
Thanks again

Hi and welcome.
I'm not great at pup selection but I'm thinking cold sweats might do the job for you, the ceramic bridge will give you the tight bass response.
Could you give us an idea of what styles you play / what sort of tone you are after?
-
Yea sure if you made me choose an album i would say metroplis pt.2 by dream theater
Style wise i would say rock to progressive to metal to classical? also looking for good cleans i play cleans just as much as huge distortion im running through a mesa mark iv head through a port city 4x12 if that helps.
Was actually looking at the cold sweats and they look like the best bet.
Thanks again!
Stoked im going to get them probably in burnt chrome
-
Yep that's definitaly Cold Sweat Calibrated Set for you!
-
i agree... :)
-
Welcome, sebby. What amp/fx do you use?
-
I wouldn't say that the cold sweat has smooth highs, fatness or warmth
but I think it will fit the style and guitar pretty well
specially if you have a dark or loose amp like a Mesa or Bogner
-
Well smooth highs is something im looking for... what would you recommend then i hear nothing but good things about the cold sweats... I use a mesa boogie mark IV head through a port city 4x12 best cab ive ever played slays orange bogner etc. anyways for fx i use an eventide time factor, keeley compressor, BB preamp Mood ring modulator and a Fulltone supa-trem :)
-
I would say go with Nailbombs.
-
Those look promising as well can any one tell compare them?
I appreciate all the help guys!
Whatever p-up i get im getting them in burnt chrome ^^

Since you're already playing through a dark sounding amp, my advice would be to go for something in-between (dark/bright sounding). Cold Sweats look like the perfect pickups for your Les Paul...they'll cut through your dark sounding Mesa and through the dark sounding mahogany body of your Les Paul. If you choose for dark pickups, you'll definately get mud with your set-up. That's why it's so important to know the woods from your Les Paul and to know your set-up, your amp, your playing etc. Another point is that every Les Paul is different (in terms of individual tone and playability), so they all react in their own way to the same pickups. It's always 'guessing', 'hoping' and 'praying' that the pickups will fit the vibe of your Les Paul...it could be very frustrating.
The 'best' way is to follow your own thoughts (after Tims advice). You are the only person that knows your own set-up, playing and guitar (in terms tone/playability).

Thank you for the advice
After all the research and clips im going with the nailbombs all posts have one thing in common which is clarity which is very important also i love the sound of them thus far. One thing i cant find is i want ceramic nail bombs but when i go to the order form it does give me an option for cermaic? i know theres non and ceramic nail bombs but how do i order them ( im get a calibrated set)
note- My mesa is actually pretty bright and very tight its a mark series amp not a recto very different sounding amps.

I didn't know about your Mesa being bright sounding, my fault! I think the stock Nailbombs are perfect for what you want (Alnico V for smoother highs, Ceramic for shaper, more cutting highs)

I'd say the Cold Sweats are clearer than the Nailbombs, especially in a dark guitar. I'd highly recommend trying the Cold Sweats first.
If you decide on a ceramic Nailbomb, then select the ordinary Nailbombs, and ask for the magnet swap in the options box.

Hmmm man i cant decided lol i see lots of paul players on this forum have nail bombs, so that leads me to think it fits well
-
I have read around here that a C-bomb is very similar to an overwound CS.
Just to put things in perspective, you are looking at two very similar ideas - most likely satisfied either way!
-
alright well ill give the cold sweats a try if worse comes to worse ill just get the nail bombs down the line!
Im pretty sure ill be happy :)
-
Sebby, what kind of Les Paul do you use? Rosewood fretboard? Then +1 on the Cold Sweats.
-
Yea its rosewood :)
