Title: Some pics of my old faithfull
Post by: Stevepage on February 12, 2009, 04:26:25 PM
Took some pictures recently of my beloved. I've had it since I was 14 (now 22). Put in a Bill Lawrence L250 in the bridge and a SD Hot Stack in the neck. Sounds awesome though it does look a bit ugly with the black pickups. It sounds so good unplugged (set up with 12 -56's in E Flat) that the ugliness of the pickups doesn't bother me.

Here's some pictures of the wear and dings

I was (briefly) reunited with my old beloved recently.  I bought this guitar about 20 years ago - it was my second ever guitar.  I replaced the pickups when I was about 15 (god awful soldering job) and sanded all the minty coloured paint off the body when I was 16.  I played it until I got a very pointy black guitar at aged 18 which was more in keeping with my metalish leanings of those halcyon days.

For the last 15 years it has sat in a case at my mum's.  She's moving to a smaller place now and couldn't store the guitar any longer so I brought it back to London, fixed up the horrible soldering of my younger self and generally gave it a bit of a fettle before giving it to some eager young monsters of rock - the offspring of our receptionist at my workplace.  Had to play it a bit before handing it over though.   It's actually a pretty decent guitar. *sniff*

Why do I want to play Half-Life?

Very nice flooring you have there. Is it real wood or vinyl?

I have no idea, my surname is not Freeman.

I can't believe that on a guitar-centric forum you've commented on my beard and my flooring but ignored the one common feature of all three photos.  :D  The floor is real genuine wood for all those floor fans out there. Phwoar.

I don't think (it's a long time ago now) that I was going for a particular "look" per se when I did it.  I do remember hating the minty colour that it originally came in (you can see the remains in the trem cavity) and there's the possibility I was on some sort of delusional SRV quest at the time but I suspect it was mainly the mint colour hatred that drove me to spend a day with sand paper working on the body after I finished my last GCSE exam.  I'm not sure I'm a fan of the look these days but it is what it is and it's clearly representative of what I thought looked good at age 16. :)

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love the look of ash.  It's prettier than figured maple, as far as I'm concerned.

I think that because I have a beard and wear spectacles certain board contributors are suggesting that I am Mr. Gordon Freeman from the popular video game "Half Life".  I believe Mr Freeman is the offspring of Mr. Sonic T Hedgehog and Ms. Pacman.  Beyond that I have no idea; since I spend my entire working life looking at computer graphics I like to do something else in my spare time, like playing guitars for example hence my pictures. :)

You know I was just fooling around.

The sanded down guitar looks really incredible if that makes you feel any better.

The black coils look good to me in that Fender, Stevepage

my old faithful is an epiphone korina 58 v. its now loaded with a mule/stormy monday combo which sound great. i'm a bit scared to play it live now, i dragged it around with me for a long time with my red steinberger GP copy. now i have 'real' Vs and steinbergers, but i still think my cheap old copies are great guitars and they have a high level of sentimental value. i couldn't pimp them much more short of a refret, everythings been lovingly upgraded on them by now by feline or i.
