just a bit curious! something to relax and focus? some that fits the style of the instrument you're working on?
for my work i something minimal and electronic like kraftwerk, or quite heavy metal works well. but sometimes you need total silence.
-
the sound of a router pretty much covers everything else!
i did go with headphones for a while but it just seemed stupidly unwise when using power tools
i tend to listen to something related to the instrument when designing or doing something quiet like carving the neck
and i cant do inlay without something relaxing and i really cant do it in silence - need to get a steady rhythm on the saw

Never listen the first record of Kreator while doing it  Too easy to make mistakes :?
+1 on power tools being covering everything, on things without it I would prefer things more cool, but usually I go to the workshop of a friend that only play metals more on the new thrash line... :?
btw I'm no builder by now...

im no builder, but when i do wiring i usually have rust in piece on... i think it just adds to the frustration if theirs something that just doesnt go quite right tho

First of all, I'm going to start a small business providing guitar setup, maintanance, small repair and minor cutomizing/modding. There aren't many in my area that do it and those are pricey.
Lately I've been reading alot of posts on different forums of guys who sent their guitar to so called repair man, guitar tech or self proclaimed luthier and got their guitars back totally F-ed up. I have done great jobs with the most primitive of tools. This inspired me. I'm going to buy some proper tools and provide some good work for a decent price.
Back to the topic: When I'm working on guitars, I always have some rockabilly or AC/DC on the stereo. Most others have some blues playing.
-
Again, I'm not a guitar builder, but when I'm working on my guitars I don't have music - just because there's no radio or music player in my kitchen.
I do find that my mind is very active when I'm doing guitar repairs (or DIY generally). It doesn't require 100% concentration so my mind is free to come up with new ideas or just ponder life, the universe and everything.

Well, in the workshop, the cd part of the cd/cassette player combo is broken, and i've only got 1 cassette which is some doom-metal (Profetus - Saturnine)... it's quite nice to work too, even if you end up hearing it a few times in one session! Beats putting the radio on and hearing the inane drivel of Radio 2 all afternoon :p Most of the time i'll work in silence though, apart from the pheasants calling each other from the roof of the workshop :)

How much are you willing to pay for us not to tell Roo about the tape of Paul McCartney's "Tribute to Nashville Country Tele Pickers" album that you used when you were working on his? :D
-
nah, roo's needed something aggressive and fast to get me through it... carving bubinga is a bitch

Live and Let Die is fairly fast and aggressive.

Fairly fast and aggressive?! CHRIST I didn't realise our definitions could be so wildly different! ;)
LOL @ Andy, I was actually considering posting something along the lines of "As long as Wez wasn't listening to the Beatles when he made mine, I don't care!" but decided against it in the interests of not repeating myself *too* often :D

I used to listen to whatever was on the hard drive of the computer that was in the spare bedroom (where I used to do my work). Be careful though, when I flogged the computer to my mate, it nearly set his house on fire as there was about an inch of sawdust on the heat sinks

Apologies - it should have read "fairly fast and aggressive for a Paul McCartney song"

I will often have Planet Rock on - or sometimes Radio 4 if I want some mental stimulation or the sound of voices
I used to find that when I worked alone - having Radio 4 opr talk radio was good as you didnt feel so isolated
I have a pretty eclectic bunch of stuff that I like from Queen to Kiss, to Aerosmith, Great White, Whitesnake
Also had The Cardihgans, Corrs, Sheryl Crow, all sorts really.
I have to play MSG or The Scorpions if I'm working on a V though!

but sometimes you need total silence.
Personally, I think silence is the most distracting thing in the world.

Tormented by the voices in your head, eh? :)

I quite like working in silence because otherwise I concentrate too much on the song! So if there is music normally stuff I don't like off the radio just for a background noise. Although in the finishing stages I listened to some Robert Plant on my last guitar....*remembers there's still no photo proof of his explorer...*

I find a nice bit of Opeth is nice to carve to. :D
-
I have a playlist on my workshop Ipod called "loud and simple". Plug in, switch on, turn up :D
Dr Feelgood, George Thorogood, BTO, Molly Hatchet, Hamsters and Rachel Steven's Some Girls with all the remixes
