Title: New iso cab in the house
Post by: Denim n Leather on February 20, 2009, 01:56:01 AM
I was very surprised to find the iso cab I ordered 4 days ago sitting in my living room when I got home!

It's a Randall 1x12 iso cab. It comes with a Celestion V30 stock, but I removed it and replaced it with a Scumback M75.

Here's a very quick clip I made just now using it. The chain is:

Agile with Riff Raff > Thunder Tomate Phil Hilborne Treble Booster > Splawn Quick Rod > SSL XLogic mic pre > Tascam 1641 interface.

So what made you go with this over the Grendel? i was actually waiting to see which one you decided to go with.

I hear the Randall is still rather loud for an iso cabinet, which has put me off slightly... though a fully equipped Grendel with silencer cover is over £500

Sounds good though for a single track!

Grendel doesn't have the best customer service reviews, and I don't feel like waiting for months to get one. It came down to convenience, and the fact that the Randall has a 5 year warranty.

Both the Randall and the Grendel only attenuate about 30 dB. If you wanna crank your amp, you will still need to put it on an isolation bass and, if you're in an apartment or similar, throw it in another room, for serious isolation.

I would say, however, that it cut about 50% of the sound coming off the amp, which is good. Plus, no room interaction. And you don't need to break down and re-set up again, so you will always have that consistency to your tracks if you're recording over any period of time.

Cool!

Still got the rockwool lying round to build mine. Or should I say overbuild? If somethings worth doing, its worth overdoing.

Need the birch ply, speaker, goosenecks, XLR connectors and a spare weekend. And to not be such a lazy git!

You weren't one of Brown's advisers over the past nearly-12 years, were you?

I just appreciate bomb-proof construction.

that's what gets most of us... it took me a month to get my ass in gear and scallop the fretboard on my fusion

Hehe, matter of perspective, I guess. To me, 'contemporary' means after 1900. PDT_008

I'll try to do something in more of the "Classic Ben" style this weekend for ya.

Something I've toyed with, too. Along with my second refret (first not so good on the edges, learned much since). Any pics?

when it's done .. hopefully end of next week.. i got to get some glue, so i fill the old inlay marker holes and scallop the last 10 frets, then it's just the final polish and it should be done.. though i'm also sanding the body down... AND i got to get batteries for my camera :P

It sounds good though a bit dry, which is normal for an ISO cab. A tad of room reverb would be good, a short room like 0.3s or sth.

Neoprene is a good thing to add to the list. It's used in flooring for gyms.
25mm MDF works as well as birch ply if you are going for a box in a box solution
